Bulls keep Matfield on ice

2014-01-29 12:11

Pretoria - Bulls coach Frans Ludeke named two strong teams to take on the Golden Lions' Vodacom Cup side and the Stormers at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

WIN: A legendary rugby experience!

The coach included recent recruits - Piet van Zyl (Cheetahs) and Jacques-Louis Potgieter (France) - in the team that will face the Lions in the early match of the day, but made it clear that not much must be read into his selections for these two warm-up matches.

Former Springbok lock Victor Matfield, who was due to make his return on Saturday, was not included in either of the two squads named.

No mention was made as to why he was omitted.

"To have almost everyone fit and able ahead of our first match is great and we need to thank our medical staff for that. It does give the coaching staff the luxury of trying different combinations and that is exactly what we will be looking for in Polokwane," Ludeke said.

“I would like to see both teams playing to our patterns, as this will make it easier to decide which players will suit our style best ahead of the season opener next month. To be successful in Super Rugby, you need a squad though, so I will be looking at both matches with equal interest," the coach said.

“The players understand the squad principle and all is keen to contribute towards achieving our goal of winning the 2014 tournament.”

Coach Frans Ludeke, who grew up in Polokwane, had a luxury of a fit squad and bar prop Morné Mellett, could name particular combinations for the matches against the Stormers and the Golden Lions Vodacom Cup teams.

He is also pleased to be back in his old stomping ground.

"We appreciate the effort of everyone involved in bringing the game to Polokwane, as we try to bring the team to our fans where possible. One can expect early season jitters, but hopefully we can give the spectators good value for their money.”

The match will not be shown on TV.

Die Stormers gaan n wind sluk.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 12:34

Ek stem saam.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 12:56

Boudspier, ons sal gesig wys, glo my.

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:00

Nah Chris, as Bulls ondersteuner ken ek nie dronkverdriet nie, slegs euforie.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:11

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:16

Nee, sjampanje met die prop reeds uit.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:25

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:34

Mens sit nie n prop terug in n lee bottel nie.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:46

Julle gaan hom weer moet terugsit. Soos laasjaar.

  • Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 12:30

    Hy's bang

      Hans Oosthuizen - 2014-01-29 12:36

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 12:47

Hans ek neem aan jy is versigtig optimisties. Met net 15 punte? Jy is meer versigtig as optimisties.

      Hans Oosthuizen - 2014-01-29 14:24

Nee Chris.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-30 00:13

Hans, jy mag dalk reg wees.

  • Martin Pienaar - 2014-01-29 12:44

    Excuses already...?!

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:32

I agree Martin. They have been making excuses since Dewalt kicked for touch last year. And Victor Matfield's return to rugby in itself is a big excuse.

  • Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 12:51

Lekker lang pad Slaapstad toe van Polokwane, veral as jy vol kolle en kneusplekke is.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:06

Is die Camo Cows se volgende oefenkamp in Kaapstad?

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:09

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:17

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:39

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:59

Klein Baas.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 14:24

  • Deon Louw - 2014-01-29 13:07

He (Matfield) is building a netball team, 3rd girl born today, geluk.

  • John Comyn - 2014-01-29 13:12

It's a pity about Vic. Elstadt wanted to bliksem him .... again! You can run Vic but you can't hide. Eventually we are going to get you. Otherwise the Bulls shadow side looks pretty strong. I'm surprised to see Fouche in for Pollard. Have the Bulls made another bad buy from the Western Cape? Is Pollard also going to the Cheetahs in the next couple of months to resurrect his career. We shall see.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 13:19

Elstadt has to settle for second prize: breaking Steggosaurus' leg again.

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 13:41

Elstadt cannot even break a heart in a gay bar.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 14:02

Of course not. He does his breaking on the field. Breaking Steggosaurus' leg or K.akkies' jaw or Oupa Elastoplast's kierie, etc. He doesn't hang around gay bars, unless he can find a Camo Cow there to break in half.

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-01-29 14:16

      Breaking the missed tackles record.

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-29 14:25

No Turnstile Steyn and Invisible JJ has set that record so high it is unbreakable.

  • Genio Deporte - 2014-01-29 14:16

Pity that this game will not be broadcasted. Would have loved seeing two SA sides take on one another. Two good teams that will take the field, good luck to both.

  • Herbert Smith - 2014-01-29 16:09

So this Travis Ismail is playing against the Lions and Stormers on the same day. Tough guy !

      Chris In Oz - 2014-01-30 00:15

No, not really tough. They just don't have any more players. Their money ran out.

  • Ax Wong - 2014-01-29 19:48

Many of the posts are inane derogatory comments made by one set of supporters against another. Is it possible to ask that intelligent observations be made, to the exclusion of the usual drivel so prevalent here?
