Bulls confirm Pollard deal

2012-07-02 17:15

Johannesburg - The Blue Bulls Company confirmed on Monday that Junior Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard will join the Blue Bulls at the end of 2012.

The 18-year-old Paarl Gymnasium scholar was one of the stand-out players in the Junior Boks' successful campaign at this year's IRB Junior World Championships in South Africa.

He scored 42 points, including 12 points in South Africa's 22-16 victory over the Baby Blacks in the final on June 22 in Cape Town.

Blue Bulls Company chief Barend van Graan said Pollard had been on their radar for more than two years.

"We encouraged, through our scouting process, a possible move to the Blue Bulls after his school studies way back in 2010, when Handre played in the Grant Khomo Week for Under-16 players," said Van Graan.

"What impressed us then was his cool head under pressure and the maturity of his general play and decision making.

"His performance during the JWC confirmed that potential and we are excited to have him in our structures later this year."

What a waste of talent... Says a lot about the plans they have with Morne Steyn, or rather the lack of plans... BUT, it must be said that the WP rugby bosses lost their brains with their front teeth!! Pathetic!! Another talent in WP lost to the bulls. That now makes it Hougaard, Sadie, Engelbrecht and Pollard! All of them exciting backline players...

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-02 17:23

Happens, Professional sport. Should see how bad it is in basketball, American Footbal and baseball. Over the years it will just get worse. Get use to it. Gone are the days of playing with pride for your town. It is all about money now. Just look at how many people are going overseas. Same thing.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-02 17:23

yeh as in morne leaves to japan after world cup at the age of 31 to retire with millions then pollard who is 18 will be 21/22 years old and will win the world cup in 2019 when he is 27 and many many super titles. simple really makes perfect sense to me i guess hougaard, sadie, engelbrecht, pollard all came to play for an A team not the D team nice acquisition bulls

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-02 17:27

hmm, an A team loses 5 games in a season and you are happy about it. Good for you buddy. Expect lots more to leave over the next few years from all unions. It's all about the money. You trolls are funny, even though I Still think you are all the same person, just trying to get attention. Ah well. If that is what makes you happy I guess.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-02 17:32

lean ur name is spelled incorrectly, please advise your parents

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-02 17:33

and it may be an A team that lost 5 games but maybe they were tired of their own fans referring to them as being in the D team just because penalty burger isnt in the team

      steyts - 2012-07-02 17:34

So tom he goes to the bulls where he waits to play for 4 years and then all of a sudden he has to outplay Goosen for the bokke??? KEEP ON DREAMING!!!! If Heyneke Meyer does not pick Goosen even if Steyn returns to form then he will be mocked around the world!! You need to buy some more Province talent to get you another super cup... But I'm sure that will happen since the management at WP who clearly is fast asleep OR has no idea of what talent is will let them slip away... Well done WPRU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-02 17:35

At least I have a name how about you? And you know nothing about me, or what my name means or came from. Having fun trolling and having no life? I Know it sucks not having finished school doesn't it.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-02 17:37

Yea steyts you are clever, it's not about letting players go. It is about money, who can offer more, who can offer more game time, etc etc. It's business, go read about it.

      pete.oosthuizen.7 - 2012-07-02 17:40

a D-team that beat you twice this season. Nice see so much talent emerging at WP. Before you talk about trophies (getting very old by the way) wait until the Stormers raise the Super Rugby trophy

      jason.children - 2012-07-02 17:41

There will be more to this story, the new laws state that the Bulls have to approach WP before talking to the youngster and that WP must have first opportunity to keep him in the Province! Two weeks ago WP said they had not been approached by the Bulls and as far as they knew Pollard would be staying! It is possible that WP are after a Bulls lighty and they came to an agreement...............either way I wish this talented youngster the best of luck with his career!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 17:42

Steys, Pollard wil be th Bulls' number 2 next year. A 19 year old can't ask for more. What would have happened to him at WP? All those young flyhalves with no future. Francis, van Aswegen, Dollie, Catrawhatever and whoever else.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-02 17:44

yes WP talent, then improved at the bulls. go pollard u biscuit. i did finish school. college hill primary school got my grade 3 certificate and everything. so what r u talking about?

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-02 17:49

      f this apparently you can't write m0nkey 0n ur back on stomers24 .. it's not allowed

      pomene.stormer - 2012-07-02 17:59

@Harold - Francis bench for Stormers,Van Aswegen - in Province but injured, Dollie............ja well yes Dollie is Dollie - worth nothing and Catrakilis played in the WP team that won the Vodacom Cup recently - what other info do you need ???

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 18:10

@Harold and don't forget Peter Grant please... No Pollard know what best for him...

      jono.qmann - 2012-07-02 18:15

Tom...did you guys just realise now that province players are the most talented in the whole of SA? bulls filling there sides with more and more province players! VIVA CAPE TOWN, VIVA WESTERN PROVINCE, VIVA WP, VIVA STOMERS!!!!!!! We are just the best! Province for life!!! To all the Bulls and Cows that do not know this already...MS days are numbered and even there own organisation knows this!!! wahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha lol

      Press - 2012-07-02 18:24

@ Jono - We know our days are numbered - sun is going to explode in 6 million years and wipe out the bulls empire . . . we will just have to live with it . . .

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-02 18:29

Jono .. is a face to foot style master

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 19:05

Pomene, you didn't really give me any info. Please tell me, how much game time will Pollard get?

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-07-02 20:07

Steyts, he is white and Afrikaans and from the Boland, what did you think Allister will do? He was okay with it that January played in the place of Fourie du Preez when the latter was in top form.

      pomene.stormer - 2012-07-02 21:52

      @Harold - Game Time ?...........................None !!!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 22:10

Exactly, Pomene. No game time for him at the Stormers.

      Deon - 2012-07-03 22:03

Soon we call the Bulls team Stormers B LOL.

  • Bossie - 2012-07-02 17:32

Another bad choice made by a promising youngster- didnt he learn anything from what happened to Sadie..??

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 17:42

He learn't from what happened to Engelbrecht and Hougaard. Anything else?

      Press - 2012-07-02 17:54

He already knows Serfontein at the Bulls - and we know Heyneke likes to pick combinations . . . . And in any case - he looks to big to play for the Stormers . . .

      WernerZA - 2012-07-02 18:10

Plus, the stormers have superstar Grant... What more do they need?

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 18:12

The Stormers decided to let him go as his kicking isn't at 91%???

      shakes.tshabala - 2012-07-02 21:26

Is he going to coach Steyn now. Ooooh my Goddddddd.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 01:22

Shakes, how's Bafana going these days?

  • mike.lamb.7777 - 2012-07-02 17:41

Grow up the lot of you!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 17:46

I agree, Mike. They are all childish.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 18:12

bunch of kids they are...common guys...

  • pomene.stormer - 2012-07-02 17:41

Congrats BBRU this is a good signing by you - If you snooze you loose - After all you guys are in desperate need of a decent flyhalf unless it is once again intended to have him there to warm the benches and to ensure he does not play against you guys................doesn't matter - a good buy and may he do well in the near future !! Mr Pollard, I sincerely hope this was the best decision for you as a player ???

  • James Parker - 2012-07-02 17:51

This is why Stormers really need to win the the Super15...and many more. Maybe then we'll be able to hang on to our players.

  • nicolette.louw - 2012-07-02 17:57

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Why WP Why? If I was your CEO, I would have done everything in my power to keep this talent in WP rugby :( Totally ruined my day! Another talent to be wasted in Blou Bul land

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-02 18:03

Wasted why ... he'll win some titles & score some tries and will have more opportunity to express himself. .. go see what red said about playing for the Stomers when he was playing for the baby boks.

      selma.botha.9 - 2012-07-03 09:55

If I were your CEO I would resign in shame.

  • WernerZA - 2012-07-02 18:06

What is funny is that so many are complaining that WP didn't keep him... This is what the bulls do... Spot talent, nurture it and make them champs! WP also buys talent, although they tend to buy high profile (expensive) guys like habana, Fourie etc in the hope they an bring them success. Good luck with your plan... We had success with ours... Plus, who wants to sit on the bench watching newlands fall asleep every week... Just saying...

      Nick - 2012-07-02 18:44

haha clown unfortunately no talent comes from tshwane or their schools so much for their alleged youth programs

      Craven Luyt - 2012-07-02 18:47

Dear Nick, who just won the u-13 Craven week? Think before you post. Craven

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-02 18:54

And craven who got player of the tournament

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 19:08

Yes Stormkaap, another young WP superstar, still no 0/13 cup.

      Nick - 2012-07-02 20:21

craven go back to your caravan that's u13 we will talk again after the u18 tournament fact is there's nothing coming from the high schools in tshwane sharks bought their success in 90's by raiding cheetahs bulls doing the same the 2 players wp bought years ago weren't going to bring success even if they buy another 10 won't make a difference politics and clubs wanting a bigger slice of the pie along with coaches that have no clue the real talent will always move north

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-02 21:29

Charlie Chaplin there are no u/13 cups for the competition and if memeory serves me Griquas also went through tournament unbeaten..

      azul.taurus - 2012-07-03 07:38

Stormkaap, no one is talking about 'cups' - nick.spangenberg 'no talent comes from pretoria' - and Craven just corrected him by pointing out that the Bulls won the u-13 Craven week. You get it???

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 09:14

No Taurus, he probably doesn't get it.

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-03 12:48

Harold aka charlie, you're the typical pain in the jack. You know everything and no one knows as much as you. Perhaps you should remove that Bowler so your head can get some fresh air!

lean.sadie - 2012-07-03 18:10 Bulls got destroyed. Time to go buy some more talent guys, hurry.

  • NguVala - 2012-07-02 18:51

Just WHAT THE F**K are the WP execs thinking??? This is bull (no pun intended). They prefer the likes of van aswagen to this boy - silly leadership!!! Wien Liebenberg should be a stormer and many others in the Bulls set up but NO, WP are too obsessed with... F**k, I don't even know what they are obsessed with. All the best to Pollard

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 19:09

Too obsessed with winning the awesome Conference cup and beating the Bulls.

  • Craven Luyt - 2012-07-02 18:53

How about this mountain goats, win a few titles, fix your topp brass, sack the guy who is responsible for so many dwarves, save some money, then the Snoekies can go and buy talent too. Cunning hey? Craven

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 19:10

      That's a big ask.

  • Stormkaap - 2012-07-02 19:00

They( Bulls) have certainly bought some serious talent. Sadie, Serfontein, Pollard and Small Smith. Question is how are they going to keep them happy with enough playing time. Engelbrecht not really that great.. But talent one can always find.. But as a coach how do you nuture it. Sadie hasnt looked half the player he was in the WP side and he has now been injured for a while.. What about Jantjies and the flyhalf they scaled from Pumas

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 19:11

Smith isn't all that small. He is quite big, actually.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 19:19

These boys will get plenty of game time. Just think of it when the boks play they would be playing too...for the Bulls that is...

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-02 20:46

Stormkaap you guys have quite a few ex Gauteng Lions guys in your Stormers setup. Maybe make a sentence with pot, kettle and black!

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-02 21:32

Dont deflect the issue answer the question..were perhaps talking of CJ vd linde...wait I dont know anything bout rugby.. do tell. As far as things stand.. there will be no Lions, theyre defecting to the rest of the country from the Lions to the Kings .. a lion king maybe

      Jco - 2012-07-03 06:47

I will not put all the blame on the Bulls! If a union win the cups and their stadium are full, money is in the coffers to buy players and keep players! The Bulls and Sharks did a good job in getting their Business plans sorted out some years ago and was making plans for the future! We can blame them, scoff them, shout at them and point fingers to them. That will not change the fact that Province lost good players for a union that do things better.

  • dereck.smith.714 - 2012-07-02 19:31

Handre congratulations on coming to the school of Excellence!! BLUE BULLS!! Handre your decision means you will be a Champion and a Winner for years to come! Once again welcome to the World Champions of Rugby Union the mighty 'Blue Bulls', Guarenteed you will be a Springbok soon!!!

      Nick - 2012-07-02 20:40

world champions whaha what have they won to deserve such a title

      Deon - 2012-07-03 22:09

You are probably right but who actually wants to live in Pretoria, must be paying him a fortune. LOL

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-02 20:49

The interesting part of that SARU release a few weeks back is the age at which these rules apply. Once the guys turn 19, as in school leaving age, then there are no issues with Unions approaching players. And while they are under 19, there are no issues with a school in any area offering a scholarship to any player. At the end of the day the whole ruling is farcical - which is what we have come to expect from SARU!

      Nick - 2012-07-02 21:07

it's a joke he was approached while still in school and still has to capt wp at craven week then again rugby is run by idiots in this country what will the bulls now do with jantjies who was their no 1 young flyhalf wp/boland/fs will forever be the breeding ground for rest of country one has money issues the other run by idiots after money and personal gain so it's expected that the talent will move north and to dbn have better future there

  • anton.bischoff - 2012-07-02 21:54

9 hougaard 10 Pollard 12 Serfontein 13 William Small-Smith 14 JJ. Sounds very promising to me. About 10 days ago the Stormers denied this fact, haha Bloody Fools.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-02 23:14

it certainly does .. Stomers! we 'drink your milkshake ' !

So did his dad he must feel like a right chop now LOL.

  • anwar.addinall - 2012-07-02 23:18

If Cape Town is such a bad place, why would the "mighty bulls" get excited to have him? After all, he's a hillbilly from platberg, probably a snoek kop, murderer and more than likely gay. Ja broer, been reading these postings. Not sure what to make of this. Shifting the goalposts, are we? lol

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-02 23:31

We're excited because he's clearly a Bulls supporter

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 01:19

No one ever said Cape Town was a bad place. On the contrary, it's just lovely. Just too many Capetonians.

  • LeonTheShark - 2012-07-03 05:35

Wow the stormer bosses know how to screw up

  • Jco - 2012-07-03 06:37

Even people like it or not, the Wp rugby bosses must go and learn from the Bulls and Sharks how to keep and canvass good players! We live in a professional era. Rugby is a professional game today!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 08:02

The can learn to play rugby there as well.

  • danny.zulberg - 2012-07-03 07:47

Pollard is 1000% better than Morne ever was, and he can kick. Go join your mates in Japan now Morne.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 08:04

Danny is 1000% uglier than Ozzie Osborne ever was, and he can't sing.

  • enrico.oosthuizen - 2012-07-03 07:55

It's sad to see a talented youngster go, but let's be honest now you can't keep everyone. When will the rest of the country just acknowledge that the Cape is a talent factory! There'll always be another one. Watch out for Timo Swiel.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-03 08:14

You vant keep everybody happy, Like in the Quinn Roux case. Bulls also losing talented players to various Franchises

      Press - 2012-07-03 10:26

Also he probably didn't come from a gang background - something that must be in your genes to fit in with the WP's predominantly "gang tackle driven' style of playing . . . .

  • Claude - 2012-07-03 08:01

So much for SARUs regulations. It is clear that they were either breached by the Bulls or that WP did not or were not able to respond to the level of incentive offered by the Bulls. WP owe the public an explanation and SARU should tighten there regulations if there has been any wrong doing by the Bulls it must be penalised severely or this will continue to happen.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-03 08:13

@ Claude with all respect to you, do you think a Franchise will act out of order if there was certain rules which they had to adhered to. WP administrators are fast asleep.

  • Claude - 2012-07-03 08:23

Anton -- I don't know if there has been any wrong doing but what I said in my previous post is that WP owe the supporters an explanation and if there was wrong doing then SARU must act. It was aimed at increasing the ground swell to force WP to be ahead of the curve when it comes to securing the provinces talent.

  • Ashley - 2012-07-03 08:50

i've heard the bulls have already signed 3 u-16 boys from paarl gym ....wake up province

  • Provence - 2012-07-03 09:49

The breeding ground cannot keep everything. That is why RSA rugby exists because of WP rugby culture, so we share with other who don't have. There are plenty more players coming through from the WP creche moenie worry nie. Just think if WP kept all their players, there would be no opposition.

      Press - 2012-07-03 09:56

Still doesn't explain why they tend to only keep the midgets . . . .

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 10:03

Lot's of bred players, but no cups.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-03 10:11

They dont know how to identify talent. Why do you think Rassie left.

      pomene.stormer - 2012-07-04 06:52

@Harold - Jip correct again - no cups...................then what is the saying in Pretoria when they play a k_k game - "they took their foot of the petrol" - That is what Provincs did 11 years ago.............just to make sure they "breed" quality youngsters for export to other provinces and give them a chance as well. We will back.........sooner than what you think !!!!!!!

  • emile.strydom.52 - 2012-07-03 10:28

the Blue Bulls company don't invest in their OWN talent, they pay Scouts salary's to go steal young players from other provinces, these players are still young and need structure, not a lot of money!

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-03 10:59

      Human Trafficking ?

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-03 11:10

Rather human trafficing than human sacrifice.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-03 11:20

@ Emile so what you saying is that if you get a job in London or wherever for more money you wont go. Haha Free World

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-03 12:02

Maybe the wp should treat these youngsters like people, and not like property

      whserasmus - 2012-07-03 23:37

Stealing players?? Hate to be rude but that is a ridiculous statement. And how much money do you really think his getting?? Do you really think that WP cheque cannot compete with that of the Bulls?? If the decision was based on money he would be off to France, UK, Japan... These youngsters don't get forced to go to the Bulls, they choose it. And it keeps happening over and over again, even Rassie walked away from a very well paid job. You must be asking the question, surely there is something going on at Newlands, behind closed doors that is causing this effect. So stop all this Bulls bashing because that is just deferring your attention away from the real problems within your Union.

  • vincent.s.cupido - 2012-07-03 11:47

We shouldn't be surprised, it is a known fact that the Stormers is extremely weak when it comes to spotting and retaining talent within their reach. Examples are endless, the likes of Derrick Hougaard (Piketberg origin) and Hilton Lobberts (a much better player at the Bulls before he returned to his native province and who is currently nowhere) comes to mind, not to mention the current generation of brilliant Bulls players originally from WP country. Which reminds me of my disappointment when it was recently announced that Rassie is now SARU's "talent seeker", he failed dismally to influence WP rugby for the better during his stint as their Director of Rugby. The Bulls' succession planning is most probably the best in our country, and this deal just reinforces that believe. Jacque Potgieter (unknown a year ago) is another brilliant example, and by the way, I often hear these days that the Bulls backline attacking play has improved, and "Slap Tjips" is our backline coach from WP. WP had ample opportunity to secure Pollard's services, but they were too busy with their acquisition of a Canadian, for example. Kurt Coleman rocked the rugby scene not that long ago, but one almost forgot about him, in fact, I only remembered him when I saw him play in the Vodacom cup against Griquas recently. As is already said on this page, the game is nowadays run professionally and any franchise can buy any player, so WP should blame themselves for this lost. A great Bulls acquisition!

      Press - 2012-07-03 11:58

At least Rassie got a bit "go forward" in the pack - same cannot be said of the backline - but then most off the midgets were already on the books before he came - should have fired the lot and reverted to zero . . . .

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-03 12:21

@vince up to a point i agree wth you but Rassie was not allowed to contract people he wanted, rather some friends of administrators sons. Understand clearly what i'm saying now and thats the main problem. I can see the Stormers in the next couple of years transformed to a specific race group. Again i say it's got nothing to do with being racist etc. I dont care if the Boks or any other team consists of one race group as long as the guy who was picked are the best in his position. The Stormers gonna lose even more talented young players in the future. I believe there is a school in Pta who scouted 20 young brown players from Boland, how true that is i cannot confirm

This just shows that the Bulls are the Manchester United of SA Rugby Players go there as they know the Bulls have the best structures and know they will excel Not sure how they will keep all their players happy, as at the end of the day they will all want to play Super Rugby.. Cant wait until SARU catch a wake up and follow NZ with regards the central contracts So talent can be distributed From a BIG Sharks/Kings supporter
