Bulls beat brave Lions

2013-02-02 17:31

Johannesburg - The Bulls maintained their 100% win record at their second home, the Orlando Stadium, on Saturday with their B team registering a narrow 38-32 victory against the Lions to win the inaugural Gauteng Rugby Cup.

The Bulls started with a bang with two tries in the first 20 minutes, and with their attack on song and defence impermeable in the first 30 minutes, they appeared to be headed for a runaway victory.

The Lions, however, fought back strongly late in the second quarter after finding their rhythm, and with the team opting to pursue a more direct route after their attempts to spread the ball aimlessly failed, the rewards followed.

This resulted in a gripping clash for the few thousand fans at the stadium.

The Bulls showed their intent from the outset as centre Jan Serfontein scored a well-worked team try following a fumble by the Lions from a ruck to take a 5-0 lead in the second minute.

The Lions bounced back shortly after with former Bulls junior flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff kicking a drop goal two minutes later to put his new team on the board.

The Bulls’ smooth attack, however, paid off again in the 14th minute as fullback Jurgen Visser ran in behind the fleet-footed Sampie Mastriet to score the team’s second try.

Only minutes later Bulls centre Lionel Mapoe -- who is on loan from the Lions - was denied a try due to a forward pass, but his team-mate Grant Hattingh dived over the line in the second quarter following a classy pop pass by Serfontein for the team’s third to hand the Bulls a handy 19-3 lead.

With the chips down for the Lions, the team showed great character to close in on the Bulls in the second quarter by stringing together phases on attack and applying pressure, and after several unsuccessful attempts to work their way into the Bulls 22, their efforts finally played off with lock Franco Mostert using an overlap to cross the chalk after a long pass out wide.

This try bolstered their confidence significantly, as flank Jaco Kriel dodged attempted tackles by two defenders to dot the ball down for their second try following a good break on the wing to reduce the deficit.

Bulls’ flyhalf Tiaan Schoeman, however, slotted over a successful penalty in the dying minutes of the first half.

With the playing fields almost level both teams tightened up their defence in the second half, which resulted in a hard-fought affair.

In fact the Lions out-scored the Bulls two tries to one in the second half, with left wing Anthony Volmink scoring a fantastic individual try, while Kriel scored a consolation try from a free-kick in the last minute to match the Bulls’ four tries for the match.

But penalties by Tiaan Schoeman and Handre Pollard in the last quarter proved the difference on the scoreboard. Scores: Bulls Tries: Jan Serfontein, Jurgen Visser (x2), Grant Hattingh Lions Tries: Franco Mostert, Jaco Kriel (x2), Anthony Volmink

  • slp.mulligan - 2013-02-02 18:22

As to ? and daft comment: the previous few weeks the Lions fans have been toasting their meaningless wins against the Russians and Cheetahs and how they are proving the point that they shouldn't have been dropped from Super rugby, and that they will continue proving this point by beating the Bulls. Well, instead they should have rather not finished last on the log, and been in this position, because they knew what was coming. The Bulls have proven the point. Finish and klaar.

  • slp.mulligan - 2013-02-02 18:25

Ps. Trevor. Not everyone is an idiot. Not even you are, because you can type, and appear able to spell, and have an opinion...

      remo.liut - 2013-02-04 09:09

Mulligan your previous comment makes you a total idiot, I guess you support the queens, answer this "how many times has the Ep or one of its partners won the Currie cup in their 130 years history?". If they had stopped playing the victim and done some serious work to better their union nobody would have complained about their inclusion and would have supported them. So stuff you, The queens supporters and their administration, and stop ragging the LIONS. At least they did some work in the last 6 months to keep the ship afloat and did not blame Noahs flood, the black death, the crusades, second world war, apartheid or justin bieber for their situation. NB! I will be at Ellispark on saturday to BOO the queens.

  • JcqWagner - 2013-02-02 18:51

  • craven.luyt - 2013-02-02 18:56

Cheetahs beat Strompies, Lions beat Cheetahs, has the wrong side been relegated.

      Trevor - 2013-02-02 20:25

      Good point.

      heinrich.vanjaarsveld.52 - 2013-02-02 22:09

      Fantastic point made

  • Kykweer - 2013-02-02 19:08

I think lionel cronje was trying a bit too much and the lions wing volminc? Had an awesome game. I feel a bit disappointed that the bulls gave away 1 or 2 soft tries in broken play and our line outs were really struggling in the second half. But serfontein... Ettien botha would be proud, legend in the making.

  • Kykweer - 2013-02-02 19:11

Handre Pollard also did a lot to impress, still wish we had better props, scrums could well be our downfall again this year, ludeke should be doing everything to get JC on the roster.

  • jeandre.esterhuizen.9 - 2013-02-02 22:05

Average age 22 for the bulls first time combinations good win against a lions team with great spirit and a few games under the belt.

  • Corne - 2013-02-02 23:08

Yes News 24 and the Cheethas the Stomers

  • stompies.hattingh.5 - 2013-02-03 12:27

So, die stormers verloor teen die cheetahs wat teen die lions verloor het wat ge'demote" is! hoe werk dit? En toe wen die Bulls weer die Lions! O ja, dis mos net opwarmingswedstryde!

  • joe.dewit.9 - 2013-02-04 08:18

Elke dag skaam ek my meer en meer vir die stupid argumente waarmee my mede Lions supporters vorendag kom. Wat het hierdie game nou rerig beteken?

      remo.liut - 2013-02-04 09:11

Joe, dalk moet jy jou FB pic verander. Soos ek voorheen gese het "JY IS NIE N LEEU ONDERSTEUNER SE GAT WERD NIE".

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2013-02-04 09:47

Remo, ignoreer hom, dis 'n fake profile, so dis seker maar net 'n OP supporter wat probeer snaaks wees. Hy is nie 'n leeu supporter nie. Voor ek deesdae iemand antwoord click ek op die profile, wanneer dit fake is ignoreer ek dit.

      joe.dewit.9 - 2013-02-04 09:57

point proven by remo and nico... wag vir die groot games. die ander ouens lag hierdie warm up games af.

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2013-02-04 08:40

Very good game to watch, pity Lions lost but I think that will motivate us more for this weekends game against the queens, cmon boys play as a team and break them, go Lions!!

      brilloks.bittergal - 2013-02-04 11:49

      david.boswel - 2013-02-04 14:24

Ja wel, Nou dat hy n blou trui aan het weet hy teminste hoe dit voel om n wedstryd te wen.

      louis.bensch.31 - 2013-02-04 15:34

      brilloks.bittergal - 2013-02-04 16:19

  • andre.malherbe.98 - 2013-02-04 14:28

I like the look of Jan Serfontein. This guy is going to become the best senter in the world if he is managed correctly.
