Bulls banking on Sadie

2012-03-22 19:44

Pretoria - Bulls coach Frans Ludeke expects his midfielder Johann Sadie to take a massive step up this weekend and show his potential for his side.

Sadie didn’t last long in his only outing for the Pretoria side in this year’s Super Rugby series, playing just 15 minutes against the Sharks before going off with a shoulder injury.

And while he makes his long-awaited return on Saturday against the defending champion Reds, there is some rising expectation as to what he can bring to the Bulls backline this weekend.

This expectation jumped a few notches after coach Ludeke indicated he believed this weekend’s match would be won in the midfield.

“Everything happens in the midfield,” Ludeke said, “and if you control it, you control the game. If your midfield combination can defend under pressure and get you over the advantage line, then the whole team does well. It is these basic things that we look for.

“We are a team that plays an effective, basic game plan and we look to build momentum before we do anything fancy, we know the rewards will come later and that’s what we look for in the combination.”

Much is expected from Sadie on the field this season and it is widely accepted that he will be a Bok contender if he fulfils his potential.

“We back our structures and Johann is a good player who has special skills and can see a gap in the opposition with ease. We saw this with him as a junior and at the Stormers. He defends well and he knows how to finish off a move, and finds gaps easily. Those are traits we look for in any player.”

Ludeke said even though the Reds had injuries, he was still wary of the threat they posed as defending Super Rugby champions.

“They’re the Super Rugby champions and we respect that. We know how it feels when teams come for you. They played well this season and last week was a close contest,” he added.

“They play a lot like the South African sides, they have a very direct style and are good at the breakdown. We are aware of their strengths but we also need the result on the weekend. We will want to put points on the board as quickly as possible and look to bolt from there.”

      Rene - 2012-03-22 20:16

@Jimmy, as a Bull supporter, much appreciated. Good man!!!

      Jack - 2012-03-22 20:36

I'm with you on this one - much as it pains me to back the Bulls - I'll do it because I hate those arrogant aussies even more!!!

      Rene - 2012-03-22 21:10

The heading should read: "Sadie is banking the Bulls" - earning the big bugs Sadie, time to deliver young man!!!

      Rene - 2012-03-23 07:27

@Sakkie, hier by die Bulle gaan dit goed ou maat!

      Dewald - 2012-03-23 08:46

You must be the only Stormer with this view, good for you!

  • Burtfred - 2012-03-22 20:30

Bulls have to rely on Sadie? Sadie is a WP boy, born and bred. Can't they find good Pretoria dutchies for their team?

      Melt - 2012-03-22 21:41

@ Burtfred, Zillie calls them refugee's. As there are a few in the Stormers side as well we better keep our big mounths shut. Go Bulls.........I am one of the 90% Stormer supporters who support SA teams.

      Jason - 2012-03-23 07:40

@Raven, ex galloping golfer are we?

      Lionel - 2012-03-23 07:42

      LOL@Jason,galloping Golfer hahahaha,thats a new one(for me)

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 15:49

@Melt Thanks, but you are one of the 10% Stormer idiots supporting other SA teams. Half the locals at Newlands wear NZ jerseys and Booo SA teams including the Stormers. And then you dare to talk about Loftus

  • Facts - 2012-03-22 20:41

Go Bulls, bliksem those Reds! Sharks & Cheethas, you can do it. Stormers and Lions, what a pity we all can't win. May the best team win however. Stormer supporter.

  • Ben - 2012-03-22 20:42

Sadie will be closely watched. They know about him.

  • Priester - 2012-03-22 21:03

As a Bulls supporter I know this is going to be a close call. This game will be one of the most important games for the Bulls, especially after their defeat to the Blues. The TEAM need to produce and not Sadie alone. Expecting a vast improvement from Morne and I believe JJ will have great impact later on in the game. Blou Bul Groete! (Vir jou ook ou balsak al is jy so 'n swak sportman)

      Priester - 2012-03-22 21:53

BlueRaven well a bonus point will be just that, a bonus and we all would love one but for this game I will be more than happy with 4 points. Another bonus will be to deny the Reds a bonus point in the interest of the SA Conference. Blou Bul Groete!

      Lion - 2012-03-23 16:56

Go Bulls!!!

  • ckrohne1 - 2012-03-22 21:10

      Priester - 2012-03-22 21:54

Amen, vir my verkieslik die Bulls! Blou Bul Groete!

  • Priester - 2012-03-22 22:14

Morne was the weakest link against the Blues and he needs to step up. I do think Elton Jantjies will look better with a pair of horns ditto for Goosen.

      Marius - 2012-03-23 06:52

  • Frans - 2012-03-22 22:22

Shows you even the bulls need the stormers flair in the midfield, but we don't mind helping out, there are so many classy backs in the Cape.

      Priester - 2012-03-22 22:50

Ag thanks Frans julle is so f=kk8n mede deelsaam! - 2012-03-23 16:41

Frans we also don't mind to help you out with your 2 wings Habana and Van den Heever.

  • Frans - 2012-03-22 22:28

      Marius - 2012-03-23 06:58

@Frans. Daar is baie meer OP spelers in die Bulls span as WP spelers en so by the way JJ Engelbrecht en Lionel Cronje kom albei ook van die Ooskaap af.

      Rene - 2012-03-23 07:19

  • bernhard.b.baatjies - 2012-03-23 00:39

hehehehehe...Sadie couldnt even make the first team at Stormers, now he is the Bulls saviour ...hehehehehe....shame...we can give you guys more of our bench-warmers if you need..

      Rene - 2012-03-23 07:23

@bbb, you sound so bitter! He will be ONE of 15 quality players on the field.

      BlouMasjien - 2012-03-23 07:38

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 08:35

You chaps all know I rate fact, it was you Bulls folk who laughed at me and a few others last year when we spoke of Sadie making his debut on the wing for the Stormers against the I really do hope the young man can play for an extended period without injury - it is most certainly in the interest of SA rugby.

      Willa - 2012-03-23 14:25

Bernard, want a peak at the Super Cup? Wait, you probably forgot how the Currie Cup looks, too ! Ya, we need your has beens a lot

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 15:52

We Stormers should stop talking about players in the Bulls team that was bought. It is a professional era, everyone buys!!! Go check the players on the Stormers website, 60% of our squad is not originally from the Western Cape, that's right, nearly 2/3 bought!

  • Ian - 2012-03-23 12:27

- 2012-03-23 16:49

Ian are you also a conspiracy supporter like people that believe that Armstrong was never on the moon and Kennedy's murder was planned by the Americans themselves? Will you concede that the Bulls were robbed of a penalty after Basson was tackled late?

  • - 2012-03-23 16:32

Here comes a Bulls stampede, they are seeing Red(s)

  • noagark - 2012-03-23 19:56
