Kimberley – Springbok flank Heinrich Brüssow will not stand back an inch when let loose on a rugby field by Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské again.
With the Tri-Nations and World Cup around the corner, the Cheetahs flank will be out to convince Bok team management that he has finally shaken off all his injuries. And he would like to take that first step against the Brumbies on Friday.
Brüssow has been out of action for a month after suffering a rib injury in the Cheetahs’ tour match against the Reds.
His long-term knee injury – he was out of action for almost a year – may also still be at the back of his mind.
However, Brüssow maintains that he has recovered from all his injuries and will not stand back for anyone on the field.
“One has to be realistic and keep the World Cup in mind. But that does not mean I will hold back on the field. All my injuries are fine and I just want to play now. I want to get that match-fitness back,” said Brüssow.
He returned to action in Super Rugby against the Lions after recovering from his knee injury. Brüssow was then included for the injured Frans Viljoen.
Prior to his injury against the Reds he was a rock in the Cheetahs’ pack again.
He was one of the Cheetahs’ standout players in their historic first overseas victory over the Waratahs.
“It will be nice to make my comeback. I’m looking forward to running on the field again and to get that elusive win. I don’t know yet whether I will get any game time against the Brumbies. I should have more clarity on that on Tuesday,” said Brüssow.
Springbok coach Peter de Villiers paid Juan Smith a visit last week to discuss his injured heel, but did not visit Brüssow.
“Juan’s injury is one that can definitely influence his participation in the World Cup. It’s understandable that Peter visited him. As Springbok coach he needs to be up to speed with Juan’s recovery,” said Brüssow.
