Brumbies late-show stuns Bulls

2013-07-27 18:59

Pretoria - A last minute try by Brumbies centre Tevita Kuridrani saw the Bulls go down 26-23 in their Super Rugby semi-final at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The battle among the forwards was always going to be the deciding factor in the match, with the tourists enjoying the upper-hand in this department for most of the match.

The first 10 minutes belonged to the Brumbies as they put 10 points on the board in this period to leave the Bulls reeling.

As it happened: Bulls v Brumbies

VIDEO: Bulls v Brumbies, highlights

The Australians fired the opening salvo as inside centre Christian Lealiifano succeeding with a penalty three minutes into the match.

The visitors further showed their intent to dominate the set phases as they out-muscled the Bulls in the first scrum of the match in the fifth minute, enforcing a penalty from a kickable position.

Lealiifano pulled his penalty attempt to the right that would have given his team a psychological six-point lead early in the match.

The missed opportunity, however, came at a small price as they found their way over the whitewash three minutes later to score the first try of the evening.

Dangerman Henry Speight lived up to his reputation as playmaker and showed up the Bulls’ defence.

When he was finally chased down, he managed to offload to fullback Jesse Mogg to score the try, with Lealiifano converting, to extend their lead to 10 points.

The Bulls’ plight was further complicated with Steyn missing his first attempt at goal in the 14th minute.

Two minutes later the Bulls reduced the deficit when outside centre JJ Engelbrecht powered his way over the tryline, with Steyn’s attempt going wide of the posts.

The Bulls flyhalf finally found the target in the 22nd minute to bring his side within two points of the Brumbies.

However, the visitors pulled back another three points with Lealiifano succeeding with his attempt, while the Bulls responded with three points of their own 10 minutes from the half-time break.

Lealiifano had the final say in the first half with the No 12 bringing an end to the tit-for-tat kicking to hand his side a five-point lead going into the break.

The Bulls started the second period with great intent and came painstakingly close to scoring shortly after the kickoff with Grant Hattingh being held up over the line.

Steyn, however, gathered the three points through a penalty conversion to again get his side within two points of the Brumbies.

The Bulls flyhalf and Lealiifano continued to exchange kicking duties two more times until the hosts took the lead for the first time in the match in the 51st minute when Steyn landed his sixth penalty of the game.

The plot, however, reached farcical levels as Bulls captain Dewald Potgieter opted to go for the sideline rather than going for the points on three occasions.

All three times the Bulls failed in their attempt to score from the lineout and it ultimately backfired for the Pretoria side.

Potgieter’s earlier doubtful decisions, however, came back to haunt him as Brumbies outside centre Tevita Kuridrani crossed the whitewash to silence the Loftus faithful, with Lealiifano ending the scoring as he started it, with a conversion.

The Brumbies will now face the Chiefs in the final in Hamilton next Saturday.

Hahahaha couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch. Chokers

      JokerZA - 2013-07-27 19:06

Unlucky blue bulls..but u didnt deserve a win.. u played crap. Also to those bulls fanatics who say 3 super cups and counting... what didnthat help? U guys choked like a teenager on a 1st date.

      Jono Qmann - 2013-07-27 19:07

Empty seats and another empty trophy cabinet...told u don't be so vol bek! I assume this game didn't mean much since u guys didn't win and supposedly don't loose big games! Next time win first before you speak a good game!

      Blou Bloed - 2013-07-27 19:09

So it rubs off. The Bulls watched too many stormers games the last couple of seasons!

      Bootman Stormerboy - 2013-07-27 19:09

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.............................what a bunch of tossers. The Bulls were lucky to qualify for the semi's. All they did was make SA rugby's name gat. Well maybe this will be good for Bok rugby in the end. Now Heyneke can see how useless his blue cows are.

      Sean Bagley - 2013-07-27 19:09

Brumbies won...Houston,I think we have a problem... Dewaldt Potgieter wat 'n po3phol,Hougaard pateties en Dean MacGyver Greyling go play rugby for Milnerton Unions... Bulls sukkeling against an average Brumbies side. They look so good with ball in hand and yet skop en jag so k^k.Stok en jag kalg^t tussen die diasies is veel better. Twinkle toe Henry Speight and Jesse Mogge super dangerous... What's that Loftus motto again:"Hier skree ons virrie Brumbies of hou jou bek ek sê".

      trev2 - 2013-07-27 19:11

Bulls were really bad today. On that performance they are way below the standard of the NZ teams. They would have had no chance against Chiefs in the final or even at home against the Crusaders if the other semi had gone the other way.

      René Müller - 2013-07-27 19:12

To all you 'big mouthed' supporters, rub it in... do whatever it is needed to feel better tonight. Your teams were nowhere today, or did they play somewhere, sometime??? Just asking..... Congrats to the Brumbies Could someone please tell Dewald that 4 tries are not needed in the semi's - you go for the post when the opportunity arises...

      Jono Qmann - 2013-07-27 19:13

So does this mean there will be more stomers in the sa team now? Since we klapped the blou bokke and now they loose when the pressure is on...that's not acceptable for test rugby...o many tries did the bulls score tonight?

      Jay Jay - 2013-07-27 19:14

      TravieGrif - 2013-07-27 19:55

Rene, as much respect as I have for you, I think that even you will admit that the majority of Bulls supporters on this forum are very windgat and exceptionally arrogant and annoying. It is because of them that I was supporting the Brumbies. I think that the Bulls are a great team, and it's a pity that they didn't win, but because of the Bulls supporters that I say kry vir jou.

      Morden Michael Mcnificent - 2013-07-27 20:20

Bulls chokers: 4 years cupless (and counting) in ALL major forms of the game. (awaiting legends of cups won years and years ago in an ancient tournament that evolved into the super 15 as we know it today)

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:27

Lol, atleast we have those cups to fall back on. But we lost today and it does hurt, but the Bulls are a class side and will pick themselves up.

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 20:04

      I try.

Is hul alreeds begrawe? Praat hul van 'n "rugby opstanding" of is hul "rugby dood"? Chiefs bo komende Saterdag!

      TravieGrif - 2013-07-28 08:16

Priester, well done on being a decent Bulls supporter. I hate it that people like you are painted with the same brush that paints the Bulls trolls like Thomas and Harold Raymond Johhy etc etc. I think it's a great pity that we don't have an SA team in the final and it had to be the Bulls becau the Sharks were Norman Nowhere this season. All the best for the CC, mate.

  • Izzi Max - 2013-07-27 19:03

Well done Bulls, that will go down, as thee, stupidest performance Loftus has ever seen. Let's be serious for a second. The Bulls cant contest a line out, let alone cleanly win their own, they get bossed at the breakdown like sponges, and their scrum is in absolute shambles and they cant keep the ball going forward through more than 1 man. What the hell do they actually do well? Sorry but they are not going to reach the top 6 next season like this, and half the squad is now leaving. The Bulls need to seriously revamp their whole playing style because they simply, do not have the players for it.

      Will Fischadler - 2013-07-27 19:18

Victor Matfield the biggest problem...being a great player does not always make you a good coach..and I agree they have serious problems..

      Izzi Max - 2013-07-27 19:27

      How is Matfield the problem?

      Paul Brady - 2013-07-27 19:28

Own worst enemy!! Even Mallett pointed out that the Brumbies were scrumming illegally, but the captain never went to the ref and asked him to check. You think McCaw, Gregan and the like would miss an opportunity like that?!? And then the 76 penalties not kicked, and the 5 points Morne missed and the dickhead on the bench who gave away a penalty (that has to make the record books!!) Would also like to know why Jean de Villiers got yellow carded two weeks ago for a late shoulder charge, yet Steyn and JJ both flattened by similar tackles (the one on Steyn high as well!) and nothing was done?? Where's the frikkin consistency mr Bray? sorry the Bulls lost though, means I have to mow the lawn next Saturday morning now :(

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:29

Izzi, the Bulls need fresh blood. That`s all.

      Izzi Max - 2013-07-27 19:41

Sorry? I'm not even mad, if they gave it their all and lost id be bummed out, but the Bulls were just unbelievably stupid and narrow minded today, screw em.

      Dylan Nel - 2013-07-27 20:32

Izzi, the bulls are generally narrow minded! Oh wait and stupid! Still a pitty they lost though.

      Izzi Max - 2013-07-27 21:33

Not really injured, losing Juandre and Mapoe were definitely the biggest blows.

      Paul Stormer - 2013-07-27 23:35

I was proven wrong before and really hope I am proven wrong again.... I just feel that this is the last chance the Bulls had for another couple of years, given the exodus of their senior players (again!) Oh and can someone find Johnny Johnson and help him fix the glitch in his PC; either that or he seems to think that all of life's problems can be solved by dissing the Stormers...

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:31

Lucky? You can be lucky in one or two games, but not in all the games. The Bulls made their own luck then let themselves down.

  • Theuns Jacobs - 2013-07-27 19:04

Joubert had a shocker...brumbies should have scored at least 15point more!!!

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:31

      Daar is geen verskonings nie.

  • Nighthawk Wild - 2013-07-27 19:04

You only have yourselves to blame Bulls Congrats to the Brumbies Bul Groete

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:31

  • Wickus Ferreira - 2013-07-27 19:04

      Wickus Ferreira - 2013-07-27 20:10

And due to the 2nd World War...the Germans are the number one country in the world. History means nothing...

      Hein Makkink - 2013-07-27 21:21

The consolation cup is not a cup, we do not recognise or take pride in any such is all or nothing and today it is nothing.

      Will Fischadler - 2013-07-27 21:23

      Paul Stormer - 2013-07-27 23:40

@ Johnny "19 years and cupless".. almost true, except it is 16 years. But we did manage to beat the Brumbies this year, and wouldn't you know, scored 4 tries against them. You only managed two, in two games, both of which you lost. True story!

  • Staalburger - 2013-07-27 19:04

I remember the Bulls losing the same way against the Cheetahs in the 2005 Currie Cup final. Take the points when they come, leave lineouts for when the game is safe.

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:32

Agree 100%. Inexperienced captain may have cost us the game.

      Conrad Marshall - 2013-07-27 20:19

Ludeke should have told him to take the points... basics.

      Izzi Max - 2013-07-27 20:47

it wasnt even an inexperienced captain, it was just plainly stupid, utterly stupid, hell a 5 year old would have said kick please

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-29 15:07

It was inexperience Izzi. He thought that if they could score a try they would be out of reach- he failed to understand that there was enough time left on the clock to have another go at the posts a few times.

  • James Blacksmith - 2013-07-27 19:05

Lemme guess. We should blame Cheeky Watson?

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:32

      Bootman Stormerboy - 2013-07-27 19:43

      Blame the ANC.

  • Staalburger - 2013-07-27 19:08

    En Jurgen Visser!!! Liewe donnner...

      Louis Fourie - 2013-07-27 19:27

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:33

Effed up move on his part. Bad sportsmanship.

      Paul Stormer - 2013-07-27 23:43

Must be the only player in SR history to be penalised while not even on the park! What a retard!! Please don't send him back to Stormers :)

  • Anti-Hero - 2013-07-27 19:08

Poor decision making. Not deserving. Period.

      Jp du Plooy - 2013-07-27 19:11

Yip for sure! They couldve been in the final. But I guess its rugby, wouldve loved an SA team in the final, but that aint gana get them there. Can't wait for stormers next year!

  • Dan Mccaw - 2013-07-27 19:08

Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Haa haa haa............... Dan Mccaw - 2013-07-27 20:24

  • reggie.reginald.3110 - 2013-07-27 19:11

Dutchmen given horns !! By brumbies with Clyde

  • Bloubloed Bul - 2013-07-27 19:13

      Cliff Bradley - 2013-07-27 19:28

Binne Goed : dan will daai vals Dr en sy klomp vals profiele se Duanne lyk dom , Te minste lyk hy net dom , daai idioot van julle IS SO DOM !!!!!!!

      Dylan Nel - 2013-07-27 20:19

Yes ur right no fingers pointed at the ref! The rest of ur comment is Ludicrous bru! Div would definitely gone for posts on all 3 occasions, C'mon the Stormers always go for the points and only kick for poles if the kick is not too difficult (ie if its more than 25m out and all 3 of those were in most kickers range. And regarding ur Sharks travel comment, yes they did travel, but they had travelled from dbn to bris and won, then to cpt and won again then even further east to lose. The brumbies would have only travelled 2 thirds of that wen they meet the chiefs so they have a beter chance than the 2012 Sharks, in that sense anyways!

      Stephanes Heunis - 2013-07-27 20:20

  • Lourens M Hendricks - 2013-07-27 19:13

What did I say What did I say...Bulletjies wie op n vol loftus...The year of the WildHorse!!! Hahahahahaha

  • Binne Goed - 2013-07-27 19:13

jirre maar daai kaptein is dom. LOL

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:42

Dewald should hang up his boots just over that game. Semi-final, always take points on offer.

  • Jabu Chiloane - 2013-07-27 19:14

Leaving 3 kickable penalties, what were they thinking?.Disgusted.Well done Brumbies.

  • Brad Smith - 2013-07-27 19:14

I've called up Garsfontein and Brooklyn police stations to warn them of a spike in domestic disturbances tonight.

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:42

Domestic disturbances? Really? Was it not on Newlands where the woman was hit?

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-29 15:09

On Newlands can work here aswell for it was on Newlands` ground. Be sure to check your own grammar before trying to correct someone elses.

  • Lourens M Hendricks - 2013-07-27 19:16

    Now I'm waiting 4 the EXCUSES...we travelled,we played,last week!!!!what Now what the F#### NOW!!!!Shamepies!!!

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:44

How about our captain lost his mind? How about we did not want it enough? How about we did not play till our full potential? That enough excuses?

  • Natalie Mannel - 2013-07-27 19:17

Was Dewald Potgieter playing with a broken nose???

      Binne Goed - 2013-07-27 19:19

A broken brain? So plat soos 'n tappit

      Louis Hager - 2013-07-27 19:22

I think he was born with a broken nose.

      Binne Goed - 2013-07-27 19:29

Hy lyk nie net dom nie hy is ook dom

      Dirk van der Merwe - 2013-07-27 19:35

There is no medication for stupid.

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:45

Worst 3 decisions as a captain. Ever.

      Chrono Man - 2013-07-27 22:53

You mean he thinks with his nose?

  • Gerhard Van Antwerpen - 2013-07-27 19:18

laat die kings die nulle se plek vat in die super rugby

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:46

Riiiight. Let the bottom team replace the top team in SA?

      Chrono Man - 2013-07-27 22:55

Nou lyk jy net so slim soos Dewald P.

  • Paul Gibson - 2013-07-27 19:19

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:48

Ludeke was screaming "palle toe!" over his walkie talkie, those were Dewald`s calls, not the coach`s.

  • Kurt Fredericks - 2013-07-27 19:19

Omg they are definitely our flagship team in the DOM NULLE BULLE department.................

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:48

Why are we dumb all of a sudden?

  • Rohann Olivier - 2013-07-27 19:20

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha lekker lekkerlekker

  • Rohann Olivier - 2013-07-27 19:20

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha lekker lekkerlekker

  • Rohann Olivier - 2013-07-27 19:21

    Ag shame

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:55

Why not Grant? Does it p*ss you off too much?

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 20:22

We had enough BMT to reach the semi final. We just lost momentum, our own fault. But we deserved to be in the semi.

  • Rohann Olivier - 2013-07-27 19:22

    En slaan jou vrou. Hahahahah

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:49

Where is all these domestic abuse jokes coming from? Did I miss something?

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 20:30

The Bulls supporters that I know have a lot of respect for woman? With the exception of Doc ofcoarse.

  • Damian Klop - 2013-07-27 19:22

The Bulls have watched too much cricket lately because they snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory through stupidly (not taking 3 EASY penalties).Brumbies deserve it because the Bulls have played very poorly today and over the past 3 matches.

  • Wikus Erasmus - 2013-07-27 19:23

      Swart Kat - 2013-07-27 20:01

hahaha hehehe op d bulls hahaha hehehehe

      Will Fischadler - 2013-07-27 21:45

  • Chumani Ngcokovane - 2013-07-27 19:23

Lol lol lol lol lol lol lol....breathe lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol....breathe lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol....breathe lol. You are only a choker when you had a chance to win a cup, the bulls did and they choked. Meet you at Newlands 10 Aug 19:10 suckers. You all talk to much.

  • James Stormer - 2013-07-27 19:25

Poor vrou nulle. 3 years cupless. 3 years and counting. 2 years more than WP.

      Paul Brady - 2013-07-27 19:50

Amazing how the Bulls fans harp on about the Stormers being useless and 3 cups to nil etc, isn't it. Interesting statistic though.. since the conference system was introduced, we (Stormers) have beaten them more times, scored more tries and have a far better points difference. That statistic is still valid if you include 2010, when they beat us in the final! And then, two weeks ago, we handed it to them again hahaha Honestly, I was actually shouting for them tonight, but it is refreshing to see most of their trolls are now absent - must be the brandy...

  • reggie.reginald.3110 - 2013-07-27 19:27

Pierre Spies is a steroid fool who Jake referred to when saying SA players are dumb - hewalked the talk unlilike the Dutchmen

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:56

Pierre Spies did not even play today?

      Hein Makkink - 2013-07-27 21:44

and yet SUPER SPIES seems to be the difference between a winning Bull team and a struggling one...all without dirtying his jersey or breaking a sweat. Now that my dear, bitter Bull haters is class.

      Paul Stormer - 2013-07-28 00:02

Pierre Spies is the best 8th Man in the world.... well, on a PS3 anyway.

  • Johan Jacobs - 2013-07-27 19:30

9 moontlike punte daarmee heen. Dit het die Bulle die wydstryd gekos. Cheetah groete.........(voel nie baie gelukkig nie)

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:34

  • Cliff Bradley - 2013-07-27 19:34

      Fabri De Broma - 2013-07-27 19:57

They are not the "passionate" fans. The "passionate" fans are the ones that kept their seats even when their captain has his interview.

      Cliff Bradley - 2013-07-28 06:31

Fabri De Broma You did see the inverted comma's !!!!!!!!! But truth be told , and you guys can argue as much as you like , it never happens on BEWLANDS !!!!!
