Hungry Lions lash Brumbies

2011-05-14 13:39

Canberra - The Lions put in a spirited, committed performance to defeat the Brumbies 29-20 in their own backyard to end a 16-year losing streak.

The  Lions won for only the second time in 12 matches this season.

Alwyn Hollenbach, Michael Rhodes, Jaco Taute and Deon van Rensburg scored tries for the Lions, in last place in the South African conference.

The Lions were trailing 10-0 when tighthead prop Patric Cilliers was sinbinned on the advice of the assistant referee for a late, dangerous tackle on Brumbies' scrumhalf Josh Valentine, although replays indicated the tackle was neither late nor dangerous.

The South African side, inspired by flyhalf Elton Jantjies and their combative forward pack, then scored 22 unanswered points to give them enough of a buffer to snatch just their second win of the season.

"We gave away penalties, the game went slow and we let them back into it and for whatever reason it just seemed like we were pretty flat, I don't know what can you say," said Brumbies captain Matt Giteau, who was playing his 100th Super rugby game.

"We lost a lot of ball at the breakdown and everyone was looking for tries and we got away from the simple stuff we were doing well...and we just slipped away."

The Brumbies had opened the scoring with a try to hooker Stephen Moore, which flyhalf Giteau converted before he slotted the penalty when Cilliers was sinbinned.

The Lions were inspired with Cilliers off the field, with their pack prominent as they began their fightback.

Flanker Michael Rhodes scored a try after a sustained period of skirmishes close to the line before winger Deon van Rensburg crossed untouched after another prolonged period of attack.

Jantjies, who had converted Rhodes' try, could not repeat the feat from wider out and the Lions went into the break with a slim 12-10 lead.

Inside centre Alwyn Hollenbach scored an early second half try after a beautiful inside flick pass from Jantjies, who converted to give the Lions a 19-10 lead.

Jantjies and Giteau then traded penalties, before the Lions' flyhalf again displayed his sleight of hand when he slipped a pass to fullback Jaco Taute to score the bonus point try.

Winger Andrew Smith scored a late consolation try for the Brumbies after Giteau had sparked a counter attack from his own tryline, but the home side were unable to crack the defence again.

The loss was the ninth in 11 matches this season for the Brumbies.

    yahoooooooooooooo, at long last.....go Lions

  • kurtvs - 2011-05-14 13:48

Thanks to man of the match Elton Jantjies

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-05-16 11:35

Elton had one of his best games of the season, let's hope he can keep his form. Amaizing what a bit of competition does to a player, so does that mean Butch will play at inside center? Not all together a bad thing. Go Lions! SA teams ( except the WP ) have turned the corner, keep up the good form!

  • Rugby Guru - 2011-05-14 13:48

Its official folks hell has frozen over. Lions have owed their fans this type of performance for 2 years. Let's hope there is more to come!

      rugby_guru - 2011-05-14 18:11

Why you copy my Nick, you dumb ass

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-05-16 11:37

For two years? More like 15 years! Lions dont have a good record on tour. Having said that, the last team to beat the Brumbies at home were the Bulls in 2007 and the team before that was WP in 1998. Go The Lions!

  • Crusader Man - 2011-05-14 13:49

well done Lions well played.. Brumbies were dreadful but Lions deserved the the look of the no. 10 he is player of the future providing you have a decent coach.. send him to the Crusaders we will turn him into a world class player...

      Blougroen - 2011-05-14 14:47

Well - i just dont believe you - I bet you if we send you Pieter de Villiers you wont be able to turn him into a world class coach . . . .

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-05-16 11:38

@CrusaderMan - SBW looked a bit shocked and bewildered on Saturday, is he OK?

  • j k - 2011-05-14 13:49

At last! Well done to the Lions. If the Stormers could have played with half the attitude and commitment displayed by the lions , they would have run right over the chiefs. Again Well done!

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-05-14 13:52

Well done, you became men! I have said it before and I will say it again (and I know he has had a lot of critics this season) Jantjies has 'X' factor and perhaps being out of the limelight these past weeks has done him a lot of good. When he is on form, he makes things happen!

      Kaapie - 2011-05-14 14:11

Had a great game and so did Strauss, Minnie and Rhodes.. hell but Van Rensburg is poor. Glad for these okes

  • Rene - 2011-05-14 13:54

At last there is hope, have suffered long enough, hope this is not a flash in the pan. Go Lions

  • Makutu - 2011-05-14 13:55

I now see what John Mitchell was talking about when he said that Elton Jantjies has a great future and shouldn't have been rushed into the Bok setup in November last year. I get it. Welldone Lions. Now, the Cheetahs must LASH the Crusaders...

      molefeP - 2011-05-15 17:06

All the kid need is some time and space to develop. He can be a HUGE asset if he is not burned out too early. I love to watch him make those little line breaks.

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-05-16 11:41

@Makutu - your wish was granted! Big, big parties in Bloem at the weekend.

  • Robynsky - 2011-05-14 14:03

Well done young Lions.. you deserve it go get VROT !!!!

  • Stacey - 2011-05-14 14:08

ITs Happening 4 Us Boys we will build on this GO LIONS !!!!!!!!!

  • Ockie - 2011-05-14 14:10

Well done Lions. Hopefully the other SA teams will follow the committed example and make us even more prouder today. Jantjes had a great game, so did Strauss, Van Heerden and Rhodes. Minnie also had a huge impack. (In the modern game you need a real fetcher!) The rest of the team also played well.

  • Stacey - 2011-05-14 14:13

    Well done Boys YESSSSSSSSssssssss

  • ikilladabull - 2011-05-14 14:20

Thanks to the Lions ans the Stormers, my superbru is now in sy moer......But well done Lions. Great game Earl Rose.

      EXBULL - 2011-05-14 15:51

Janties had a great game and likening him to Earl Rose is uncalled for. This kid needs support and gametime and is a bright prospect for the future.

      ikilladabull - 2011-05-14 21:40

exbull, my comment wasnt meant to be a swipe at Jantjies. It was a swipe at all the idiots who were calling him useless and likening him to Rose. When the Lions were losing earlier in the season, he was getting the blame for it, now I would like to see him get some credit.

  • Red Lion - 2011-05-14 14:21

TIME TO PARTY!!!!!!!! Thank you my Lions. Thank you :) We will never no matter how much we get run down ever say die!!!! A new day is dawning!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LIONS GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Forever red and white.

  • Jack - 2011-05-14 14:36

Great stuff, boys! Now make it two in a row. Strauss, you good thing!

  • BugsyJamesy - 2011-05-14 14:41

  • Grunk - 2011-05-14 14:42

After the Stormers match I "stormed" out of the room because I didn't want to watch another humiliation for us right after that - and missed out on what would have been one of my best results of the season. Oh me of little faith!

  • JudithNkwe - 2011-05-14 14:43

    Wow - go Lions go!

  • Ang - 2011-05-14 14:49

Well done Lions - So happy for John Mitchell and Carlos Spencer!!!! After all the hard work put into this team, it finally pays off:-) Absolutely brilliant performance from Elton Jantjies!!!

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-05-14 14:57

Take a bow Josh Strauss - a captains performance. The centres were great, and Elton Jantjies showed once more that "special" many see in him - he must NOT be shoved into any Bok teams / squads yet. P Divvy must leave him be. Rather let Carlos continue mentoring the kid for a few seasons yet (damn he pulled a few King Carlos tricks out today) CONGRATS Lions and the fans......

      molefeP - 2011-05-15 17:09

I think we will have to start adding the young Mr. Strauss to that list of exceptional loosies that we have. Imagine having to run at Strauss and Alberts. No thank you! That said, how was Kabamba and Johnstone against the Crusaders! WOW!

  • Carl Muller - 2011-05-14 15:14

I am not a Lions supporter but congratulations. High time they scored a win!!

  • crocowild - 2011-05-14 15:44

It looks like John Mitchell found a Moses to lead the Lions out of the bone dry desert of losing.Congratulations to the Lions and i hope that this will be the start of a turnaround in their luck.

      EXBULL - 2011-05-14 15:49

....or maybe he found a Noah to rescue them from a flood of defeats.

  • GraemeBB - 2011-05-14 16:21

Well done Lions - it is about time that you boys performed! I never watched the game, but will check it as soon as I can.

  • ebdg3000 - 2011-05-14 16:25

Hooray, I'm a Sharks fan but I've been hoping the Lions would get it together for a long time. I hope they go from strength to strength now - like the Reds

  • rc8000c - 2011-05-14 16:48

    Awesome stuff boys.

  • Marshall - 2011-05-14 17:16

Well well, I would never had guessed this one. Well done Lions, keep it up!! (my SuperBru has been blown out of the top hundred, thanks to Stormers & Lions, but for the Lions sake, well worth it!).

  • Marshall - 2011-05-14 17:29

...and no need for Bitch James!

  • Kleinboet - 2011-05-14 17:59

Well, this must be a record: Nobody has had any unflavourable comments up to now. Must be because the Bulls fans are watching their team play. Well done, Lions! From a Stormers fan

      darkwing - 2011-05-14 18:20

There you go, Kleinboet. You were the first one. Hooray, Lions, from a Bulls supporter.

  • Maarten - 2011-05-14 18:03

    Brilliant, way to go Lions.

  • rugby_guru - 2011-05-14 18:20

Sorry, this is a lions thread but how much did the bulls pay the ref to make these calls? Whole team stops yet ref doesn't blow. Watch these cheat snake their way into play offs

      Maarten - 2011-05-14 19:01

The ref was crap, but how is that the Bulls's fault? Come on, catch a wake up pal.

  • Tongie - 2011-05-14 18:44

Lions, "one hit wonder," sorry i meant to say "one weekend wonder."

      Lefty - 2011-05-15 10:13

Are you and Robinhood the same person? Useless comments!

  • macrini1 - 2011-05-15 02:44

It's sad how I have to come to a South African site to comment and reflect on Super Rugby games, there seems to be no forums on NZ sites (at least none with comments)? You guys take rugby passion to a whole new level! Well played Cheetahs!!!!

  • nate - 2011-05-15 08:11

  • Carl Muller - 2011-05-15 08:56

Surprise of the year. Why don't you do this more often? Congratulations, I take my hat of for you. Bulls forever.

  • Draconian - 2011-05-16 08:03

Well done boys!!!! I hope this is a taste of things to come!!! GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!

  • JR - 2011-05-16 10:03

  • MB1810 - 2011-05-16 11:41

It figures - I've been waiting all season for the Lions to pull of an upset, not missing a single game and the one Saturday I actually have things to do and I miss the game - they win, I had to be content with watching highlights. Congratulations Lions!!!
