Stormers take aim at history

2010-04-14 13:23

Cape Town - A victory for the Stormers over the Chiefs in Hamilton on Friday will equal the record number of five wins in New Zealand in one season by South African Super Rugby franchises. The last time this was achieved, was back in 2001.

After beating the Blues 33-21 in Auckland last weekend, the Cape franchise will be aiming to secure their second Kiwi scalp Down Under - and follow in the footsteps of the Sharks who defeated the Hurricanes (29-26) and the Highlanders (30-16) earlier in the competition.

The Bulls recorded a 33-19 win over the Chiefs in Hamilton last Friday.

Not only will the Stormers look to equal the highest number of victories by SA franchises in New Zealand, they could also improve South Africa's overall away record against Kiwi opposition.

Teams from SA have lost 125 of their 165 matches played in New Zealand since the inception of Super rugby in 1996.

On Saturday, the Cheetahs will try to break a few records when they take on the Crusaders in Christchurch. No South African team has ever defeated the team from Canterbury in Christchurch.

Since making their return to the Super 14 in 2006, the Free State outfit has not won a match in Australasia.

However, an upset win for the Cheetahs against the Crusaders, currently second on the Super 14 log, will take the tally of SA victories in New Zealand to six.

The Bulls, who are currently leading the Super 14 log with 33 points, will be aiming to end their four-week Australasian tour on a high when they take on the high-riding Reds at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.

The Pretoria outfit have never won their last tour match in the history of the tournament. They have also suffered two defeats against the Reds during their last two visits to Brisbane in 2008 and 2006.

Round 10 concludes in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions host the Sharks at Coca-Cola Park.

The hosts are still searching for their first win in this season's competition while the Sharks will be aiming to keep their mathematical chances of making their playoffs alive by securing a bonus point victory against the side who has conceded the most points in the competition to date.

This time the Stormbarians is going to see their backsides properly, the Chiefs is wounded by the Bulls and are going to bouce back with a bang, they don't want to loose twice in a row, So Go CHIEFS and silence those winkers from the Cape once and for all

  • Province - 2010-04-14 14:17

This headline is clearly deceiving, as the article refers to a collective record involving 3 SA teams. Sometimes I think the sport24 reporters instigate the resulting bekgevegte, that is sure to follow, for their own entertainment...

  • sharky - 2010-04-14 14:23

i am a stomers supporter and a south african team supporter, i hope and wish the stormers can secure this win for us. to all our south african teams well done boys with the wins and the losses.

  • Danny - 2010-04-14 14:30

The chances of breaking the record is very good, of equaling the record, excellant. Go Cheaters and Stormers

  • rob - 2010-04-14 14:47

hahahahaha...the cheetahs to beat...hahahahaha...the crusaders...hahahahaha...who writes this stuff...hahahahahaha...cheetahs to beat the crusaders...good one...

  • Gerrit - 2010-04-14 14:50

Komaan Stormers, doen dit vir SA trots. Wat die Bulle betref, elke game is 'n nuwe begin, so moenie te veel in die verlede lees nie.

  • STORMER - 2010-04-14 15:09

@Wagga - Don't come with this tendency, this tonsil tendency. This a revolutionary blog. If you don't like it - jump. B@stard, bl00dy agent.

  • Ghwappie - 2010-04-14 15:21

Deceiving headline indeed. The record will be a true SA team effort, Stormers together with the Sharks, and the Bulls also getting one win. Wagga, please go play with your Pierre Spies poster and leave the forums to people who know rugby. Both the Stormers and the Bulls are playing brilliant rugby, if you cannot see that you are more of an idiot than everybody thinks. Wonder what Dr Phil would say about this deep-seated hatred of yours - did you have a bad experience in Sea Point one December?

  • StaalBurgher - 2010-04-14 15:32

Eventhough I wish that the Lions would turn it around, if they do it against the Sharks I will be mightily peeved. This habit of "saving your best for other SA teams" is crap.

  • Blue Bull Hater/Anti-Blue Bull - 2010-04-14 15:32

This game will be another TOUGH affair, but the the Blue Machine already did us(STORMERS) a fovour by man handling/grinding the Chiefs. So I strongly believe that as we have done in the past ,against the Chiefs in New Zealand we'll win this game by between 10-15 points, as well as a bonus point. Up you STORMERS!!!!

  • Molefe - 2010-04-14 15:38

    Good luck to the Stormers!

  • Evert - 2010-04-14 15:42

Wagga - The stormers ARE going, The chiefs ARE wounded, and are going to BOUNCE, they don't want to LOSE twice, silence those WANKERS......bloody hell....

  • PowerGame - 2010-04-14 15:42

Just one question, when will pieter de viliers force saru to include some black players in the S14 teams. When will heini adams get his chance? And who is that clown playing scrumhalf for the stormers, why is alistar not picking ricky? I'm not seeing any progress being made!!!!

  • GP - 2010-04-14 15:46

@Wagga (wanker ) - it is about SA rugby idiot, the collective record as "Province" said, not about your pettiness. Bet you are one of those idiotic Bull supporters who gives the REAL INTELLIGENT Bull supporters a bad name.

  • Ballas - 2010-04-14 15:56

    @ stormer, thanks mate,had a good laugh

  • @wagga - 2010-04-14 15:57

Judging by your poor English and aimless rhetoric, I can only assume that you are a Bulls fan. Remember, it was the STORMERS who beat the Blues, which the BULLS failed to do. By a BIG margin too :)

  • @powergame - 2010-04-14 16:20

Your comments are off the topic. But let me answer you, that clown that you refer to is outplaying Ricki and rightfuly deserves his place. And chosen by Alastair. I can see you would rather loose with a transformed team than win with the best. Sad but true. Thats unfortunately why this continent will forever remain in the doldrums. Sadly.

  • Nikki - 2010-04-14 16:28

    Bwaaa-ha-ha @ STORMER! Good one!

  • The Godfather - 2010-04-14 16:33

What are you talking about guy? The Cheethas beating the Crusaders to make it 6 away wins for SA sides. What competition have you been watching? Have your head exsamined nameless journo...

  • Fanie @Stormer - 2010-04-14 16:35

Don't touch me on my studio! Don't touch me on my studio!

  • Provinceman - 2010-04-14 16:43

  • RIP ET - 2010-04-14 16:50

Get out of here you bloody agent LOL.

  • STORMER - 2010-04-14 17:12

@Fanie - a chap like Wagga usually pleads the opposite "please touch me on my studio...please touch me on my studio"...

  • Rugby expert - 2010-04-14 17:19

...and... "drum roll" the wnners of the 2010 Super series...The Lions...!! Watch them now that Wikus van Heerden has returned! Going to teach the Blue Bulls a lesson or three. Stormers... in a tea cup. Now ridig a wave, but crashlanding soon.

  • Paul Young - 2010-04-14 17:21

Wagga, any SA citizen who does not support every SA team, obviously putting their own preference top of the pile, the Bulls in your case, the meows in mine, is not a true blooded South African rugby supporter. Any SAfrican that calls for a victory against an SA team by a non SA team is a wanker of note. All SA teams will win this weekend except the Sharks, but they are out of it anyway. In this competition all the local teams in each country should play their games first, ensuring that no interference, good or bad, can be insinuated about results when home teams play each other at the end of the competition.

  • stomerfan - 2010-04-14 19:03

stormers will take the super 14 . 2010

  • Stormers Hater/Anti-Stormers - 2010-04-14 22:22

This Stormers team is on a DOWNWARD SPIRAL!! They leaked WAY too many tries in their previous game, and CAN'T ATTACK! They have the 4th WORST attacking record in this year's competition (with only the SHARKS, CHEETAHS and FORCE scoring less tries than them). Even the LIONS have scored more tries than this OVERRATED team. Seems like Habana was a REALLY BAD BUY. Bekker is USELESS, Burger is a YELLOW CARD on two legs, Aplon is way too SMALL and Habana CAN'T SCORE. At least the have dropped January, now they will at least lose by a smaller margin. Goodluck, you're going to NEED IT!!!

  • @Stormers Hater/Anti-Stormers - 2010-04-15 01:13

Are you new to the sport? Being a good team is not just about scoring tries. It's also amongst other things about handling sustained pressure and defence!! So since you know all about stats please consider having a look at the stats again and tell me what you see under “points against” for the Stormers.

  • Chris from Brisbane - 2010-04-15 05:32

I cannot wait to see the game here on the 23rd. However, I never liked the name "Stormers", as it is already used here in League. Why the team was not christened the "Cape Cobras", a unique name for rugby, I will never know. Go the Stormers!

  • Megabull - 2010-04-15 10:56

@All you silly weerprobeer fans Wagga is not form SA........ AUS or NZ with a name like that........ Stop pulling the Bulls into all your $#!t and good luck.

  • Province4E - 2010-04-15 12:26

Wagga - Isn't that a smelly kind of toe fungus? I am glad there is another SA team in the top 4 with the Sharks not being in the form they were in last year. It also gladdens me that Puke Watsisface is not part of the outfit! Go Stormers!!!

  • Michiel - 2010-04-15 12:29

Shame. Just one game that leaked more than two tries (three - not even a bonus point) and the Stormers are on a downward spiral????? Yes, the lions might have scored more tries - but how many are scored against them?? Rugby expert - the lions winning the 2010 S14 - what a joke!!

  • hardiblu - 2010-04-15 13:57

So, it is up to the Stormers to make history, The other Franchises that have laid the foundation for this 5th win are waiting, if you trip up tomorrow you dont only let yourselves down you let them and the whole of the rugby watching nation down - no pressure there then!!

  • Gabba - 2010-04-15 15:21

@stormerhater. You obviously have smoked tree or pot or something. You must be crazy. Stormers have the best defence. We have a healthy balnce between attack and defense. How can you compare the Stormers with the Lions and the Cheetahs. Watch rugby with merits bra and don't be bias.
