Stormers beaten in Brisbane

2010-04-23 14:30

Brisbane - The Reds maintained their push for the Super 14 playoffs with another tenacious victory over South African title challengers the  Stormers on Friday.

The Reds moved to third on the standings midway through the 10th round after a gritty 16-13 win over the Stormers for their third straight win.

The Reds have now conquered the top three teams this season --  Crusaders, Bulls and Stormers -- and are looming as genuine contenders for the southern hemisphere provincial championship after years of mediocrity.

Both sides scored a try each in the slogging encounter but flyhalf Quade Cooper's goalkicking proved the difference with a conversion and three penalties from seven attempts to Peter Grant's conversion and two penalties.

The Stormers' losing bonus point was enough for them to take over at the top of the standings on goal difference, with the Crusaders and Bulls still to play their matches this weekend.

"The boys are playing some great rugby at the moment," Reds' skipper Will Genia said.

"It wasn't pretty, but a win's a win and our structure paid off as the Stormers feed on continuity."

The Reds followed up their determined 19-12 win over the Bulls the previous week with another wholehearted display, particularly in defence as they kept the big Stormers' forward pack at bay in the second half.

Giant lock Andries Bekker scored after just three minutes, carrying over two tacklers and stretching his huge frame to plant the ball down for a try.

But indiscretions allowed the Reds to claw their way back with two penalty goals from Cooper for the Reds to trail 7-6 at halftime.

The Reds, roared on by a 30 259 home crowd, hit the front early in the second half from a Cooper penalty goal and former Melbourne Storm rugby league centre Will Chambers won the chase to a Cooper kick directed to the corner to score.

Cooper's conversion pushed the Reds out to a 16-7 lead after 47 minutes, but the Stormers hit back with consecutive penalties from Grant to trail by three points with 25 minutes left.

The Stormers applied the pressure, bombarding the Reds' try-line at one stage in over 20 phases but the home defence stood resolute and launched their own counter-attack in the final minutes.

Genia was over the try-line in the last minute but was prevented from grounding the ball by Bryan Habana's arm as the clock wound down.

"We just couldn't get going and the conditions were very slippery tonight and the Reds proved to be a very competitive team," the Stormers' Springbok flanker Schalk Burger said.

It was the Reds' first win over the Stormers in their last seven meetings and sets them up for next weekend's Australian derby with the  Brumbies in Canberra, while the Stormers return home to face the Crusaders in Cape Town.

I am a Bulls supporter. My Superbru pick is Reds by 8, but I hope I am wrong! Go Stormers! Do it for SA!

  • piepies - 2010-04-23 12:38

come on WP you can do it pls.

  • STORMER - 2010-04-23 12:44

Oh dear.....The Haters must be loving this lazy performance from Stormers.... WAKE UP my mountain goats.

  • Stormer - 2010-04-23 12:48

Stormers denied a penalty try when Habana was tackled off the ball with an open try line after kicking it forward from an intercept. Gonna be the one that cost us the match.

  • Sharkie - 2010-04-23 12:55

The Stormers are playing a great brand of rugby, I`m sure they`ll do it. Shark supporter !

  • STORMER - 2010-04-23 13:26

Well done the Reds. Seriously a well deserved win. No excuses. To The Stormers, all is not lost. I AM STILL A STORMER. To The Bulls Tards who will by now have experienced multiple 'O's' - enjoy your steek vir die week. You have not seen the last of THE STORMERS and you have most definitely not seen the last of ME.

  • - 2010-04-23 13:29

Can't see the game but from the penalty count (Cooper missed many) we were defending way too much. Seems the Stormers didn't learn anything from the Bulls. I am not happy with this loss.

  • Stormers Hater/ Anti WP - 2010-04-23 13:31

To the Bulls Hater/ Anti Blue Bulls, ja china, so much for your rugby knowledge since 1978, Andries Bekker was pathetic, and yea so much for the Bulls being Bad against the REDs the Stormers are just as Bad, off to drink a beer to celebrate the win against the Bulls Hater / Anti Bule Bulls, you should stick to chess or smoking Tik!

  • peebo - 2010-04-23 13:31

this is the worst case of biased refereing ever - thye Reds were allowed to cheat at every breakdown and spent the entire game in off-side positions.

  • Stormer - 2010-04-23 13:31

A whole lot of happy Bulls supporters out there as the Stormers lose this one. Go ahead and laugh Bulls supporters, you wanted it so much so good for you!

  • Deon (Bulls supporter) - 2010-04-23 13:34

Reds 16 Stormers 13 This is not good for SA rugby but I hope that Kaballas and Blue Bull hater wil stop talking nonsense on this blog. You see people this is exactly what I meant when I said that any team can loose in this competition and to think that Cooper missed 4 penalties make the score looks better.

  • Bokke4Life - 2010-04-23 13:34

Stormers still ahead on the log, goes down to points difference, Hopefully the saders will lose against the force! Then stormers should end up second, bulls first!

  • Blue Jake - 2010-04-23 13:35

@Stormer, Kaballas, Blou bul hater. Lekker naweek vir julle hoor. He he he he he he he he he he he he he he.

  • Raai -raai - 2010-04-23 13:35

  • Jakes - 2010-04-23 13:35

    HA HA HA

  • Bulls Bo - 2010-04-23 13:36

To all the normal Stormers supporters. Sorry, guys, just not enough, but well tried. However, you have a great, dangerous player in Bekker. Watch this guy in the future - bye bye Bakkies. @Ka(k)ballas - It must have been the ref, the Bulls, the ball or all of the above, huh? Hope you learned something: Don't count your chickens... I guess the 'rugby lesson' will be taught another time then?

  • Chuck - 2010-04-23 13:36

First the Crusaders, then the Bulls and now the Stormers! The Reds looks more and more like a possible Super 14 champion side! My top four teams are Bulls, Stormer, Crusaders and Reds. GO SA!!

  • Stormers Fan - 2010-04-23 13:38

A quality side wins the games that count. Sorry Stormers, you still have a way to go......

  • Lion - 2010-04-23 13:38

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Kry ek nou lekker tot so in my klein toon!

Go Skarks?

  • Easy B - 2010-04-23 13:40

Oh Stormer, stick it in a tik pipe and smoke it. We don't hate teh stormers we hate you bunch of crap speaking capetonians. There is nothing wrong with Cape Town. It's a beautiful city. Unfortunately, it just full of capetonians.

  • peebo - 2010-04-23 13:40

the worst case of criminal reffing yet seen - still, too sloppy Stormers. Freshen up and finish the season on a high!!

  • @Stormer - 2010-04-23 13:40

Hahaha!!! Now don't start blaming the ref. And you always say the Bulls blame the ref for defeat. Hypocrite!!!

  • Jakes - 2010-04-23 13:41

Well done Reds, they played well, too many handling errors from the Stormers! Not too bad a result. The Crusaders are going to lose now against the Force, Home semi's still very much up for grabs. Stormers to beat Bulls at Newlands to gain Home semi final. The Reds will lose against the Brumbies and prob the Waratahs. Stormers Fan forever!

  • Gary Saunders - 2010-04-23 13:41

Lets go Sharks. We still have a chance to go to the semi-final. Bonus points is what we need. Lions 36 - Bulls 15.

  • ALFONSO - 2010-04-23 13:41

well done STOMERS i`ll always be ur supporter win or luse

  • Deon (Bulls supporter) - 2010-04-23 13:42

IF I LOOK AT THIS BLOG IT SEEMS THAT MOST OF OUR BULLS SUPPORTERS ALSO SUPPORT THE STORMERS AS IT SHOULD BE FOR WE NEED 2 SA SIDES IN THE TOP 4 BUT UNFORTUANATELY THE STORMER SUPPORTERS DO NOT SUPPORT THE BULLS AT ALL. Kaballas and anti bull and I forget the name of the Bulls supporter who is always giving the other SA team supporters hell on this blog now is the time to change your attitudes and support SA teams.

As rugbyspeler is hy useless, useless, useless.

  • Bruce - 2010-04-23 13:43

How thick are those Stormers forwards? Three times the Reds throw a short line out to the prop and three times they fall for it!!! What a bunch of silly plonkers!!!

  • Powergame - 2010-04-23 13:43

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA, Bahahahahahahahahah, baha baha, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah, lets hear it for the inbreeds from the cape!!! Bahahahaha haaaaaaaaa, crap I'm pissing my pants laughing! Now watch my team give it to the Bulls tomorrow!

  • danie - 2010-04-23 13:43

@Boet, my superbru pick for tomorrow is Lions by 3. Sure they will do it against a highly overated bulls team. You go you lions!!!!

  • @Kabalas - 2010-04-23 13:44

  • Nikki - 2010-04-23 13:45

Didn't catch the game but I am sure it was a ripper looking at the scoreboard! Goooooo Bulls!!

  • Ockert Vermeulen - 2010-04-23 13:45

Another year same old useless Stormers.

  • George - 2010-04-23 13:45

    Lekkerrrrrr !!!!!

Jammer toe Habana onderskep het was sy been nog duidelik n probleem anders was hy weg.REDS verras almal hulself ook en good on them! Stormers hou hoog daai koppe.

  • BlueBull_what else - 2010-04-23 13:46

well done Stormers. three left to loose. I predicted 4 losses in a row. Go for it!

  • piepies - 2010-04-23 13:46

    aaaagggg p@$s

  • Stephen - 2010-04-23 13:46

Its a pity we lost as we tried to play the rugby. Unfortunately the Reds rely on heart and home and if they were to face the Bulls and Stormers in SA it would be a massacre. Thry are also pretty boring as Australian rugby is always. But we got a point and stayed above the Reds, which is in the end the consolation. The Reds now face some tough games and I see them faltering against the Brumbies, which will derail them. We play Crusaders but I am pretty positive about this one. Interesting we beat all the NZ teams but lost to three of the four Oz teams.

  • allan - 2010-04-23 13:46

I support all SA teams and I supported the Stormers today, but I have to ask this question that has been bugging me since last week. Do we still want all these Stormers players in the bok team, because after the last two weekends in particular last weekend, everyone was calling for the likes of Matfield, Bakkies, Morne Steyn and Fourie Du Preez to step down because a new bread of players has made the step up, Well excuse me but the scoreline shows that the Stormers lost just like the Bulls, and lets rather say that every team can have an off day, before we start trying to replace our tried and tested game breakers.... Lets rather add to the pool of depth by adding the likes of Bekker, Vermeulen, Brok and Liebenberg then say our current crop are not up to scratch anymore.... Bok fan, Bulls fan and SA super 14 teams fan, yes even the Lions....

  • Anti-Stormer - 2010-04-23 13:46

Well done Stormers!!! With that bonus point for the narrow DEFEAT, you can enjoy your temporary stay at the top of the log. Just for the next hour or so. Hou by die Blou!!!

  • Mike Bulls supporter - 2010-04-23 13:47

@Stormer, yes I am one of the Bulls supporters that did not mind your team loosing today, just like the stormers, bulls ran into a brick wall last week and were beaten! Blame whoever, swear, kick, punch whoever! We're all missing something here, Reds are becoming a threat!

  • Pieter (Sommige Stormers is Brommers) - 2010-04-23 13:47

Congratulations on the BONUS point Stormers, u are now top of the LOG!! Well done!!

  • Mark - 2010-04-23 13:47

hahahahahaha so funny for all you who ripped the bulls for also loosing to the reds. LOL LOL hahahahahahaha

  • h - 2010-04-23 13:47

    HAHA kry vir julle!

  • Paul - 2010-04-23 13:48

The REF was fast asleep! Forward passes galore by the Reds, Bryan Habana tackle should have been a penalty try. Towards the end, the scrum on the Reds line was reset when in fact, the Stormers killed them in the first instance. And no, it was not atry by the Reds at the end. Thank God for Bryan Habana, he played extremely well!! Horrible to watch such a close game when the REF was clearly against the Stormers! Please, please, please.......get rid of these incompetent REFS!
