Spencer pivotal to 'new' Lions

Johannesburg - Former All Blacks star, Carlos Spencer, is one of nine newcomers in Dick Muir's first Lions Super 14 team to face the Stormers at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

One of the surprises in the starting side is teenager Wandile Mjekevu on the left wing.

He is one of six new players in the starting line-up and one of nine in the 22-man squad.

As expected Spencer will start at flyhalf where he will be partnered at scrumhalf by another newcomer in JP Joubert.

Springbok and former Stormers wing Tonderai Chavhanga starts on the right wing.

Up front, last year's Griquas skipper and No 8 Jonathan Mokuena is a new face, as is his lock team-mate from Kimberley, Jacques Lombard.

Pumas hooker and captain from last year, Hannes Franklin, is another newcomer to the side.

Tighthead prop Kevin Buys has an injury and Ross Geldenhuys, who was loaned to the Blue Bulls towards the end of last season, is back in favour.

Charles Emslie, a retreaded No 8, will be on the bench as hooker replacement, while former Bulls flyhalf Burton Francis and Pumas scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee are the three newcomers among the reserves.
