Bloemfontein – Scrumhalf JP Joubert will play for the Lions in this year’s Super14 and Currie Cup.
An arbitrator ruled in favour of Joubert in his contractual dispute with the Free State Rugby Union (FSRU) and he is now free to further his career with the Lions.
The arbitration hearing about the validity of the 31-year-old scrumhalf’s contract started last Thursday.
Joubert’s legal representative, Alwyn Myburgh, said that advocate Bertus van Rooyen had ruled that the player’s contract with Free State is null and void. He is therefore free to choose where he wants to pursue his career.
He had already joined up with the Lions in November.
He felt that he did not have a binding contract with Free State beyond 31 October 2009, while Free State believed that he had signed with them until 2011.
Myburgh said that Joubert was delighted that he could focus on his game again.
“He wishes the Cheetahs all the best for the year, but is now committed to the Lions.”
