Grant in shock Force switch?

Stephen Nell - Die Burger

Cape Town – The Western Force are lining up Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant as a replacement for Matt Giteau next season.

Grant’s parents recently moved to Perth and the Force have apparently identified the Springbok as a potential replacement for Giteau, who is heading back to the Brumbies.

Grant’s agent, Chris de Beer, confirmed he had been contacted by representatives of the Force.

“I’m expecting an offer in writing next week,” said De Beer.

He also confirmed French club Racing Metro had followed up their interest in Grant with a formal offer. It is believed to be the biggest offer yet for a South African player.

Grant’s contract with Western Province expired at the end of the season. He has previously showed that money is far from his only consideration by turning down an offer of R10-million over three years to play in Japan.

However, his resolve may be tested once more as Racing Metro are prepared to pay significantly more than that, while the Force are also believed to be prepared to pay good money for the man who won his duel with Giteau against the Force last year.

Grant is one of several WP stars whose contracts expire this year and the Cape rugby union has a fight on its hands to retain its top talent.

It was revealed this past week that hooker Schalk Brits will be joining Saracens.
