With Springbok wing Jongi Nokwe out with a broken jaw, coach Naka Drotske has had to find a replacement and despite some good young talent in the region, came up with Uys’s name on the wing in the team named for the clash.
Uys is more known as a midfielder, but has played on the wing for Western Province and the Stormers in the past. However, his defensive qualities will be more on show than the turn of speed the Cheetahs are used to on the outside.
In choosing him in the position, Drotske left out Springbok Sevens flyer Danwell Demas, whose defence has been suspect this season but who is more of a specialist in the position.
Robert Ebersohn put up a good showing in the victory over the Blues and retains the No 13 jersey, while Sevens Springbok Phillip van der Walt gets his first start in the competition at No 8 after Frans Viljoen was forced out again with a broken arm.
Ashley Johnson has been left to play in the Vodacom Cup final while Kabamba Floors is still on suspension and Davon Raubenheimer has a shoulder niggle and will start off the bench.
