Burger ruled out for Brumbies

Cape Town - The Vodacom Stormers suffered a major setback when it was announced on Monday that captain Schalk Burger will miss Friday evening's Vodacom Super 14 match against the Brumbies at Newlands.

Burger cried off the pitch in the first half of the past Saturday's victory over the Waratahs at Newlands.

Pieter Louw took his place and seems to be the suitable candidate to start on Friday. Pieter Myburgh will probably get his chance on the substitutes' bench.

Coach Allister Coetzee on Monday confirmed at the Stormers training session that big lock Andries Bekker will take over the leadership duties in Burger's absence.

Bekker led the team on Saturday and Coetzee lauded him afterwards.

Coetzee, who earlier said he is in favour of continuity and will not make changes for the sake of it, said he wants to retain the rest of the 22-man squad.

I was sworn at when I said some one month back that he only played 48% of rugby last year and is a waist as captain because he again will not play 50% in 2010. Wel with the three warm up games inclusive he played only about 13 % in 2010. Please Coach please keep Andries as captain and send Schalk to the Vodacom cup up to such a time that his body is fit to play super rugby. What a joke your captain play 13 % of 400 min of rugby then they call him the best in the world? So please first 2 varsity games then 3 Vodacom games and then back to the big boys.

Sorry to say that the Stormers game lifted after Andries took over the captaincy on Saturday, Schalk one of the best players in the world , but not one of the best captains. He leads by example, and unfortunately, the rest of the team can't run through brick walls. Andries as captain for the rest of the season please.

I think Schalk was only made captain because he is a senior player in the Stormers and real thought never went in to it but i feel that he is a player and work horse but he does not have leadership qualities. Andries Bekker is the natural leader in the team and when he took over on Saturday one could see how the team settled down and started to jell. Burger will really be missed this weekend as for @Gert wanting to send Burger to Vodacom cup he must be off his head to make such a comment. I wish Allister would make a statement why he choose Burger as captain i can't understand it because he is showing that he is a much better coach than Pvd and if we have to have a coach of colour then he should be the bok coach but then again i suppose he is not a ANC lacky.

Schalk might not be the best captain but to send him to the Vodacom Cup or even the Varsity Cup (heaven forbid) would be ridiculous. He has a kind of respect in the rugby world that cannot be bought with money and brings a physical aspect to the game that no other flanker can. Other teams are weary of his presence and as such he makes an impact even before he runs out on the field. He most definately is NOT our answer as captain. I've never seen a captain just accept everything the ref tells him like Schalk does. Either way....good luck for Friday. It's gonna be a tough one but I reckon the boys will pull it through!

    when did burger cry

Schalk BO!!!!!!!!

Scary how your own turn on you when the going gets tough. To Gert, Cutman & Kuppy - the S14 is a marathon & after 2 games you clowns are writing Burger off???? Burger is captain because he commands respect from his team mates based on what he does on the park. There are a number of leaders in the Stormers outfit who can be called to step up on the plate if things go wrong. Bekker is one of them & hats off to him for doing a good job. If you listen to Coetzee's comments for once in a while you would understand this versus shooting your mouths off.

I agree with you that Schalk is perhaps not the best choice for captain, but your statement that he should play in the Vodacom Cup is a load of .... If you're such a statistical genius, why don't you give us the next figures. Of the 48% he played last year, how many metres did he gain over the advantage line, how many turnovers did he have, how many tackles did he make, how many balls did he slow down on defence, how many tries were scored because it takes three players to take him down. I'll play him in my TEAM any day, even if it is just for 10 minutes.

The Stormers seemed to have no problems after Schalk went off, so I would imagine that they will be just fine again this week without him.

Take all the time u need and get well soon mate, but when u come back I want to see the man possessed the blue Sckalk monster. Boys are doing well, tackling the cr@pt out of every one (i like the new ethos big D) but it is a long season and we will need a fit sckalk in the business end of the season. GO Boys in Blue GO.

@John, nowhere in my comment I wrote Schalk off, I have all the respect in the world for him as a rugby player, if not one of the best rugby players in the world.
