Cape Town – The Waratahs have picked former Blue Bulls lock Hendrik Roodt in their squad for Saturday’s Super 14 match against the Stormers at Newlands.
Roodt, who played in the Bulls’ team that won the Vodacom Cup in 2008, is poised to make his Super 14 debut for the Waratahs off the substitute’s bench.
With Dean Mumm suspended, Ben Mowen will start on the flank. Kane Douglas will start at lock in place of the injured Cam Jowitt. Dave Dennis takes Mowen’s place on the bench, while Roodt is in the squad thanks to Douglas’s promotion.
“Injuries and suspensions always test your depth. We made a point of building our depth at lock and loose forward and may now be rewarded for that,” Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said on the team’s official website.
“Kane Douglas won’t take a step back. It’s exciting for Hendrik to be on the bench.”
Roodt, 22, is a very talented player who retired in 2008 when he was still under contract.
The Bulls agreed to his request as he wanted to go and study architecture. However, his ambition now appears to be to make the Wallabies team.
Waratahs:
Sosene Anesi, Lachie Turner, Tom Carter, Kurtley Beale, Drew Mitchell, Berrick Barnes, Luke Burgess, Wycliff Palu, Phil Waugh (captain), Ben Mowen, Kane Douglas, Will Caldwell, Al Baxter, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Benn Robinson
Substitutes: Damien Fitzpatrick, Sekope Kepu, Hendrik Roodt, Dave Dennis, Josh Holmes, Daniel Halangahu, Rory Sidey
