Bakkies suspended for 3 weeks

2009-04-14 06:54

Sydney - Bulls lock Bakkies Botha has been suspended for three Super 14 matches over an incident in the weekend game against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney, officials said on Monday.

The Springbok forward was charged with striking and appeared before judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan along with members of the Bulls' team management and legal representatives.

Evidence tendered at the hearing included video footage supplied by the match broadcasters.

Wheelahan categorised the offence as mid-range, which could incur a five week penalty, SANZAR, the ruling body for rugby union in the southern hemisphere, said in a statement.

But after taking into account mitigating circumstances, the suspension was reduced to three weeks.

Botha will miss matches against the Brumbies in Canberra, the Chiefs in Pretoria and the Force in another home fixture in South Africa. He has the right to appeal.

The Bulls beat the Waratahs 20-6 to move to third in the Super 14 standings.

  • Gary - 2009-04-14 07:29

Well done Aussies! You are reducing this game to a non contact sport. I guess the citing manager wanted to assist the force and the brumbies in their upcoming fixtures.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 07:34

What a shame? plse appeal, cause I don't think that it justify such a harsh sentence

  • patrice - 2009-04-14 07:40

cant believe that the PC non rugby playing management has turned rugby into such a powder puff game - Waugh (on the losing side ?) probably insulted Bakkies parentage and deserved a little shove, and, hey ,it was a little shove.

  • Yaarik - 2009-04-14 07:43

    Ai Bakkies man!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 07:45

Someone in the bulls should pull him aside and have a chat as it is always him in the off the ball stuff

  • Frans van der Merwe - 2009-04-14 07:56

He is a dirty player and should stop dropping on his knee before every game "sick".

  • Braam - 2009-04-14 08:02

This is the biggest bull**** ive ever heard. I cant believe these ausies. This is not against Bakkies but against all SA players. Does not matter if it is Tri Nations, Super 14 or world cup. We are always at the short end of the stick. This is BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TracerZA - 2009-04-14 08:04

good news!!! I bet Bakkies was the school bully. He's the worst South African rugby player as far as off the ball stuff goes. Pity it wasn't for the rest of the season.

  • GZ - 2009-04-14 08:09

    Living up the Bulls reputation!

  • Marius - 2009-04-14 08:17

Can someone please explain whats going on!!!What exactly happened?3weeks for what????

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:19

Give the super 14 cup to the Sharks, hopefully there after we might see rugby again and not such idiotic decisions. What will they further try to do to unsettel the Bulls, they ve tried it last year with numerous bad yellow cards. This is why people start looking at the Heineken cup and 7 s rugby as an alternative to this corruption. The Bulls are a defenite fread to the other teams but why only give them the stick and others get away with murder. The ref were pathetic and seen that he is such a senior ref one starts to wonder if there is more to this.WWf has more sanity in desicions. At the end the Sharks are in any way going to lose the cup to NS or AUS and then we have no other more deserving team to help out ,because we have our selves to blame.Stop only boosting the Sharks and let our rugby grow as a whole otherwise we will never beat the other teams.

  • Wikus - 2009-04-14 08:19

Bakkies? Hit anybody? Never!!! They must have the wrong person!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:19

Please make the incident public for us to see, cause Bakkies was provoked the whole match!!! This was only a strategy and a plot to get rid of Bakkies!!!!! Bulldust.... Kaplan you smoke your own socks Mate...??

  • Andrew - 2009-04-14 08:21

Moer those sheep shaggers stukend, 3 weeks is nothing to pay. They are a bunch of pigs and need to be put in their place. You go boy.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:27

must suspend him for longer he is is a bad example rugby player he wants to hurt the other players and then he prays in front of everyone on the field That tells me what type of person he really is

  • Zolani - 2009-04-14 08:31

3 weeks for Pushing Phil Waugh, And then Blowing him a Kiss, This is Rugby, What a Crap Game our own Reff J Caplan had, Bakkies was man of the matcch more than Anyone else this season, the event was a non Entity, The Reff needs a 5 week ban for his bad deccisions against both teams, spoiled the Game,

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:32

To TrazerZA....You were probably bullied too uh! Probably a Lions or Cats supporter ...

  • onlooker - 2009-04-14 08:33

This halfwit is always involved in off the ball incidents. Time he learnt his lesson. Does anyone know what this man's IQ is? I doubt whether he passed woodworking at school - seems dimmer than Malema!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:38

must suspend him for longer he is is a bad example rugby player he wants to hurt the other players and then he prays in front of everyone on the field That tells me what type of person he really is

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:42

He has always been a pig on the field. Whether its a clear-out, using his head or just some cheap shot, - this guy deserves to learn that you can destroy a side without behaving like a schoolboy bully. I'm so sick of those macho rugby players who hide behind over aggressive play because skills wise, they fall very short. Sure aggression is important, but i'd say that players like Henry Honniball and others like him were far more disruptive and devastating to opposition players than these other bullies.(and henry didn't have to throw 1 punch. NOT ONE!!! EVER.). This bullshit about being the ENFORCER. What absolute crap. (ABSOLUTE ego). Just get on with it and play hard and fair. Finally , do you think bakkies's much mentioned GOD would agree with his behaviour?? What a hippocrit. He says a big prayer and gets down on one knee and all that stuff, and then promptly goes and head butts some oke or something simmilar. WHAT A KNOB.

  • TS - 2009-04-14 08:42

Ah yeah bit****! The vuilgat got less than he deserved. now all the conspiracy theories for the next match are going to come out. Do you guys seriously think bakkies is a match winner and with him out the bulls are gonna lose? get real you delusional bulls fans.

  • katman - 2009-04-14 08:43

@ Frans van der Merwe: I reckon he drops to his knee like that to ask forgiveness for the things he's about to do.

  • Danie - 2009-04-14 08:45

Tipical of the Ausie Bas*****!!!! The only reason why Bakkies got a 3 week suspention is because of the hiding the Bulls gave the Warathas this weekend infront of there home crowd. If it happend here in South Africa the SARB would have given him a performance bonus!!!!!! Well done Bakkies!! Enjoy the rest.

  • ERS - 2009-04-14 08:45

He has had it a long time coming. He CANNOT finish a game without some kind of incident. About time he gets suspended-schoolboy bully of note!

  • Paul Young - 2009-04-14 08:48

Has anyone cited Kaplan. I think he has applied for citizinship downunder. He was the most shocking player on the field!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 08:51

Same old Bakkies story - he should get a red card when he appears on the pitch. Always busy with off the ball bullying - typical blue bulls tactics

  • Gerald - 2009-04-14 08:51

As I said before, if the Bulls had lost this match, no citing/banning would have taken place. But to Anonymous @ 8.19am - You have just written the biggest load of CRAP!!!!!

  • Roy - 2009-04-14 08:51

What rubbish, rugby is a hard game,Phill was off side most of the game also being dirty,so tit for tat!Cowboys don't cry the Bulls are great,we can still win the super 14,with or without him,we have huge depth!Did not play like the Sharks this week,so bad,so sad!wow

  • TonyT - 2009-04-14 08:59

Did he get cited for being Bakkies, or for the specific incident? It couldnt have been for the incident as there was zero in it. The idiotic touch-ref started the whoile circus by reacting to the crowd's shouts and signalling a 'shove' as a 'strike'. This is insane. No matter who the player or the team, there was zero in it. Not even sure we are all thinking of the same 'incident' anymore.

  • Pieter - 2009-04-14 09:00

I smell rotten sour grapes, why postpone the desicion untill after the deciding ODI at PE? If the Aussies won they would have overlooked the fore-arm shove, which anyway happens in most matches without even penalties? Then when they lost the cricket ODI and no 1 spot in the world, they decided to punish us, the South African sport loving public by letting their frustrations out on Bakkies and giving their Western Force and Brumbees a better chance by breaking up the best lock combination in the world. Boo haaa boo Australians you are such sour loosers, only coming close second to the Sharks.

  • Paul - 2009-04-14 09:01

Anybody wonder why Waugh was the only player between all the Bulls player, he was stirring making trouble he should also be accountable! And if the incident is that of what we saw on TV than the deision is mind bogling. Bulls management will do their bit and just let it be instead of taking action. Come on lets fight this decision!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 09:05

I agree they can ban him for life

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 09:06

Bakkies always causes trouble and deserves to get punished, he's a brat.

  • boet - 2009-04-14 09:13

whatever guys, bakkies is always busy with off the ball nonsense, hopefully he learns his lesson but I doubt it.

  • christo booysen - 2009-04-14 09:19

Phil Waugh was looking to be bl1ksemed the whole game long... Why not have a look at his play as well? Only the SA players are being investigated

  • Brett - 2009-04-14 09:22

What is wrong with all you bleeding heart girlies,, remember this is rugby , there was nothing in that incident except a few handbag swings,, for those who are complaining go watch cricket, No matter what province you support we need an enforcer like bakkies or we will get beaten and humbled in the scrums,,,, God have all you whiners forgotten the likes of hard men such as Martin Johnson Kobus Wiese Uli Schmidt , James Dalton , to mention a few, YOU GO BAKKIES we need a few more hard men in our pack to put the fear of God into our opposition. PLEASE remember what the British lions did to us due to a hard nut leading them THEY FRIGGING BEAT OUR ASSES

  • Viljoen - 2009-04-14 09:23

Nothing more fun in rugby that to beat aussies in the game and the fight. 3 weeks is worth it Bakkies. The people who complain about Bakkies are sour shark supporters hehehehehe nicely done cheethas

  • JackB - 2009-04-14 09:24

Let's have consistency from Sanzar! Remember Ruben Thorne's spear on John Smit after the whistle in the TriNations...ONE WEEK! Stegmann's spear THREE WEEKS! Rene Ranger's elbow on Dereck Kuun..ONE WEEK! I admit that we need to have a complete view of the Bakkies incident, and perhaps the decision can be justified. The NZ / Aus teams will resort to any measure to have an impact on a SA side winning the S14, and we just sit back and accept. Commentators always refer to Kaplan as our top ref. He was disgustingly bad on Saturday..and in previous games. Mark Lawrence, Craig Joubert and Marius Jonker are far better. I rate Kaplan just below Matt Goddard at the moment.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 09:27

about time been getting away with dirty tactics for ages against other sa teams - but no work against aussies who dont fall for his suppposed choir boy off field lies. he will probably go spend the next few free weeks with Joost doing who knows what...

  • Johan Van Rensburg - 2009-04-14 09:30

I am sure that all the guys calling for Bakkies to banned must be supporting the teams at the bottom of the Super14 Log. What about all "off the ball" incidents from Waugh. Rugby is a contact sport. If you can't handle it, play soccer!!!!!!

  • jammin - 2009-04-14 09:32

How can you say Bakkies should be banned for life? He is the 'inforcer" in the team, Springboks and Bulls, and have been for a long time. With out him the Boks and Bulls would have much less success. I like the way he plays, doesn't take any crap from anybody and he's part of the best lock pairing the world has seen in a long time. This all sounds to me like provinsial sour grapes, and no I am not a Bull's supporter but a LION.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 09:32

Botha is ill-disciplined and a bakleigat who cannot differentiate between a rugby game and a bar brawl. He should be suspended for the rest of the season and sent home to contemplate his behaviour.

  • Pieter - 2009-04-14 09:32

@SHARKS: All the sore Shark loosers here supporting this poor decision to ban Bakkies, think with the one remaining brain cell who you would want to be there when the Springboks will have to be physical and wrestle against the British Lions..who else than Bakkies??? Just shows what a bunch of hypocryts you Shark supporters are.

  • JR - 2009-04-14 09:38

If anyone wants to make charges against players for off the the ball incidents need only watch the Sharks & Cheeteahs games. Thankfully the Cheetahs won despite the several cases where their players were tackled high and dangerously, stamped on, the numerous forward passes, punching etc. All these were viewable on the cameras but the match officials never blew a whistle at all. Several tackles including one where a Sharks player double kneed a Cheetah player in the face when he jumped to catch a high ball with both knees in front of him knocking the Cheetah player to the ground for a while. No whistle was blown.I am not a Cheetahs fan by the way.

  • Jakes - 2009-04-14 09:48

Every team have a "meanie", and Bakkies is ours. But I am not crying "wolf", because he has not been cited for anything wrong in a very long time. The Aussies (I hate them) are always crying and whining (remember old Georgie scrumhalf), while the All Blacks take it on the chin like us.And please, old Jonathan Kaplan is past his "sell by date", I have seen this even in the England/France and other international games where he was the referee.Go Bakkies Go!!!!!!

  • P - 2009-04-14 10:05

Boet - why don't we also site Bismarck and Keegan Daniel as well - as they are also "...busy with of the ball nonsense..." - not because of what they did but because of what the are perceived to be doing... rugby is a contact sport - Bakkies is an enforcer. Oops boet - you have to leave - you're going to miss your ballet practice!!!

  • AMAPAUL - 2009-04-14 10:20

Bakkies is a God fearing gentleman. He will never even hurt a fly. He is NOT a violent OR agressive player. I don't understand why he is being punished for Phil running into him. But I bet Phil will think twice next time round.

  • Gerhard - 2009-04-14 10:23

Guys, if you dont play rugby, shut up. Rugby is a game for men, real men. I'll clean another player anytime if it means that the team I'm playing for will get the ball. This is rugby, he is the only guy willing to take on opponents head to head. Go shout your hearts out for sissy boy Watson. Bet that when Bakkies plays for the Boks you have nothing to say... Rugby is a sport. A tough sport. Most critics of rugby is normally from the backline anyway! Hit them hard Bakkies!

  • scarab - 2009-04-14 10:29

Bakkies is the type of player that we need to intimidate the opposition. He is a hard rugger and my question is why is it that the New Zeeland players or management dont complaint about him? They know he is the real thing and respect him for that. The Aussies on the other hand is of nature likely to complaint due to their lack of flair and game ability it is in their nature. Dont say Bakkies is a dirty player as he is not and we need him for the Lions tour incoming for sure. Brad Thorn was giving a warning for doing simmilar things and he had our captain sidelined for just about a season due to his tactics and no one complaint why is it now that Bakkies is a dirty player. Wakeup and smell the coffee before you know it the game is finish. Hope the Bulls beat the Force well and truelly and may the Stormers have some luck and beat the Brumbies. ALways a staunch SA Rugby supporter. Eat some biltong for those that dont like rugby for what it is and have a beer afterwards

  • Herbert - 2009-04-14 10:41

@ Anonymous why when people are bitching are they always Anon.... Prop sharks supporters who are sore. . . Kaplan I hang my head in shame that you are an South African, what the heck are you on bud ? They should make him a touch judge at schools level man....
