Stormers to name new captain

Cape Town - The Stormers are set to name their new captain for the 2015 Super Rugby season.

With regular captain Jean de Villiers ruled out with a severe knee injury, the Stormers need a new skipper for the upcoming season.

The new captain and vice-captain will be announced at a press conference in Hermanus on Friday morning.

A 39-man squad will depart for Hermanus on Tuesday afternoon for a four-day training camp ahead of the Super Rugby tournament.

Possible candidates for the captaincy include centre Juan de Jongh, No 8 Duane Vermeulen and flank Schalk Burger.

De Jongh captained WP to Currie Cup glory last season, but coach Allister Coetzee could also opt for the experienced Springbok duo of Vermeulen or Burger.

Burger though will only join up with the Stormers squad at the conclusion of his commitments in Japan next month, which probably puts De Jongh and Vermeulen ahead of him in the pecking order to become captain.

The Stormers head to Hermanus for the fifth year in a row, ahead of their three pre-season friendlies between January 24 and February 7 against SWD, the Cheetahs and the Boland Cavaliers. The exact dates, kick-off times and venues of those matches will be confirmed later this week.

The Stormers open their 2015 Super Rugby campaign against the Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday, February 14. Their first home game is against the Blues on Saturday, February 21.
