Stormers impressed with Bolla

2012-01-13 08:25

Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has hinted at using the services of their former Springbok scrumhalf Bolla Conradie in the Super Rugby tournament.

Sport24 reported at the end of last year that Conradie was in the Stormers' pre-season plans but most did not expect the 33-year-old to make the final cut for the tournament proper.

Dewaldt Duvenage is the hot favourite to start at No 9, with Nick Groom and Louis Schreuder seemingly next in the pecking order.

However, it seems as though Conradie has impressed Coetzee thus far in their pre-season preparations and he could be used ahead of Groom and/or Schreuder.

Conradie's 223 first class appearances may give him the nod over the youngsters Groom and Schreuder, who have a combined first class tally of only 43.

"We have to develop the young guys, but pressure situations could develop where experience can help a lot," Coetzee told Die Burger newspaper.

"Bolla had a good season last year at Boland. If he meets our fitness standards and his form is good, he will get the opportunity to play for the Stormers."

Conradie last played for the Stormers against the Reds at Newlands in 2009. He has captained Boland the last two seasons after falling out of favour at Western Province.

The Stormers are currently in Hermanus on a pre-season camp.

Come on, this guy is 33 years old.. slow and just another wash out.. WPRU please don't make the mistake by making him the 1st string scumhalf for the Stormers

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-13 09:34

The WPRU are already on a slippery slope to nowhereville. Rassie Erasmus left because of what he described as amateur administrators....

  • brian.heunis - 2012-01-13 08:43

Ricky Conradie or is that Bolla Januarie?

      Francois - 2012-01-13 11:20

It also obviously helps that he pronounces "Dertien" in the same way as Allister - they understand one another better.

  • Blouballas - 2012-01-13 08:45

I'd like to see Bolla at 9 and Earl at 10.

      Kurt - 2012-01-13 09:18

as a sharks supporter that would make me happy!!

      Sean - 2012-01-13 13:56

  • malcolm.molver - 2012-01-13 09:20

Wow! And people say the Sharks buy has-beens? Hahaha!

  • Jeffrey - 2012-01-13 09:23

I agree, Bolla's the man, and lets bring back Braam van Straten. For Pete's sake Bolla is almost at the stage where he is using a walking frame.

  • Ouklip - 2012-01-13 09:33

At his best his past was to slow.

  • Daniel - 2012-01-13 09:44

Love this guy, stoked he's in. Will be good back-up for Dewald and the other guys can learn from you. This guy had a great effect on the youngsters at Boland last year as captain and winning the 1st Division... Not the old Bolla trying to take out Geo Cronje attitude any longer either. Will admit loved his GAMES OF THE SEASON he always played at Loftus, sticking his tongue out to the Loftus crowd not liking him for obvious reason. Still know some Bulls fans that hate him. Good luck Bolla!

  • Nicola - 2012-01-13 09:52

What about Theo Wakefield as parkie se slotmaat?

  • Dewald - 2012-01-13 09:55

    Another Habana in the team!

  • Emile - 2012-01-13 10:08

this is a joke. he is 33, let him play for Boland, Allister stop this please, we will loose guys like Nick Groom if this happens, we have already lost Sadie & JJ because of BAD decisions made by Allister no wonder Rassie left, he gave Allister young STARS just to see them walk out the door again!! what have Allister done with the Stormers team, NOTHING!!! Give Brendan Venter the reigns!!!

      eric.viljoen - 2012-01-13 10:10

You're going on like Allister is the only person who has the power to select someone in the team

      Blouballas - 2012-01-13 10:19

Ek dink Snor moet die Stormers coach word.

  • jjlambrechts - 2012-01-13 10:28

agnee, Rassie gone, Bolla back. Nee man ouens.

  • Chris - 2012-01-13 10:36

With the players they've got at the moment in their squad, they most probably will be impressed by ANYONE walking pass Newlands. Sorry, but as a die hard WP-supporter I really don't see them get anywhere this season.

  • chris.booise - 2012-01-13 10:36

    Hoekom hoekom?

  • Morne - 2012-01-13 10:42

Bring back Eddie Andrews, Hanyani Shimange, Bobo and rest of the Superstars as well. Idiots!!!!

  • Saffa - 2012-01-13 10:56

Delighted to see that as is the norm, the STORMERS are dominating allllllllllllllllllllllllll online chatter........although I can understand why the folk up north would be happier discussing and dissing the Stormers rather than face the brutal facts a little closer to home: They support a team captained and vice captained by Spies and Meisiekind......

      Blouballas - 2012-01-13 11:04

      Mill, is that you?

      Morne - 2012-01-13 11:05

Ja shame, I take Bolla anyday over those 2 leading my team.

      Saffa - 2012-01-13 11:58

Hello old friend :) Sabbatical is over.

      Blouballas - 2012-01-13 12:04

Who knows? I'm now nicely settled in my new environment and I'll be having a little more time to play. I nogal missed this.

      Saffa - 2012-01-13 12:25

Good to hear!!!!! I also took a sabbatical of sorts - but hey....with the S15 round the corner and Pierre Spies captaining the Bulls, I just HAD to return.....I too missed this. I am glad to hear you are settled and doing well, I trust both the Sonny Bills are doing well?

      Blouballas - 2012-01-13 12:45

Ha ha ha ha. They are doing fine, thanks. We are in town for a little visit, then we are heading back. Little Sunny is already developing an accent. Scary. When I learnt of Pierre being the new captain, I thought of you immediately.

  • Ronnie - 2012-01-13 12:16

What a Joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be suppoting the Lions this year. It is because of things like this that Rassie has left.

  • legndkilla - 2012-01-13 12:46

for the love of cape town!!!!!, plse dont do it,plse!!!!! weve managed to get rid of the one has been srumhalf dont add another 1

  • Blip - 2012-01-13 13:30

    Bring back Divan Serfontein!

      Blouballas - 2012-01-13 14:22

Hulle is nog nie hasbeen genoeg om vir die Stormers te qualify nie.

  • jacques.kies - 2012-01-13 14:40

Allister is jy n politiekus of net n onnosel afrigter? Nou kan jy sien hoekom WP is waar hy is en al die jong spelers en goeie afrigters vertrek.

  • Deon - 2012-01-13 14:42

As long as he plays only 1 to 5 minutes a game, most Stormers fans should feel okay. He should retire this year, 33 is old for a scrumhalve.

  • dudley.abrahams - 2012-01-13 19:54

Bolla?is WP an old age home for the hasbeens

      Lance - 2012-01-14 13:54

Looks like it...surely there must be a young star somewhere ?...lets go club hunting..he is fine as an impact player second half when things slow down.

  • Lance - 2012-01-14 13:52

My...how this year has flown by..is it the 1st of April already ???? I look forward to my favourite team playing in slow motion in 2012...I guess the positive is the game will feel a bit longer, so maybe Bolla can offer some value... Im really excited about this ofcourse.
