Cape Town - Social media reacted with shock at the news that former Springbok James Small had passed away of a heart attack on Wednesday.
He was 50.
Small played 47 Tests for the Springboks between 1992-1997 and scored 20 tries.
He represented Lions (formerly Transvaal), Sharks and Western Province at provincial level.
He was most famously part of the Springbok team that won the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home soil.
Small is the third member of that Springbok team to have died - loose forward Ruben Kruger died from brain cancer in 2010 and scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen from motor neurone disease in 2017.
Absolutely shattered to hear of the passing of a great Springbok and a good friend. The first 2 words in my book "The Springboks and The Holy Grail" are James Small. Be at peace my mate

RIP James Small, 50, the sometimes troubled Springbok who tenaciously marked Jonah Lomu in the 1995 World Cup final. He is the third of that famous Bok XV at Ellis Park to leave us, after Joost vd Westhuizen and Ruben Kruger.
