Sport24 readers back Strauss captaincy

Cape Town - The decision to appoint Adriaan Strauss as Springbok captain has gone down well with Sport24's readers.

In a recent Sport24 homepage poll, readers were asked what they thought of the new skipper.

Around 4 000 users voted in the poll, and the results revealed that new coach Allister Coetzee picked the right man to lead the team into battle.

Results of the poll, in which we asked: Your thoughts on Adriaan Strauss being named the 57th Springbok skipper?

41%Excellent choice, would have been my selection as well

24% - I'd have gone for Warren Whiteley

15% - It's only an interim captaincy for the Ireland series. Doesn't really matter

14%Duane Vermeulen for me

6%Pat Lambie all the way

It is interesting however that almost a quarter of the participants wanted Whiteley to be given the captaincy.

With Vermeulen set to arrive in the country over the weekend, there is no guarantee that Whiteley will even get a start against Ireland in the opening Test at Newlands on June 11.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...
