No captaincy regrets for Duane

Cape Town - No 8 Duane Vermeulen has no regrets about not being handed the Springbok captaincy and fully supports new leader Adriaan Strauss.

Vermeulen, who plays his club rugby at French giants Toulon, was a strong candidate to become the next Bok skipper, but ultimately it was decided that the national captain should be based in South Africa.

But Vermeulen is not perturbed by the possibility of captaining his country slipping by the wayside.

“I have no problem with the captaincy. It wasn’t my decision, it’s all out of my control. It’s the coaches and SA Rugby’s decision who they feel is the right guy for the job,” Vermeulen told reporters at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday.

Flank Francois Louw, who plays for Bath, was another possible candidate for the captaincy and Vermeulen said the new skipper can always knock on their door for advice.

“Adriaan Strauss is a good captain. He was captain of the Cheetahs and now at the Bulls. He knows how things work at international level so I’m supporting him 100%. And if he’d like some assistance from us other senior guys then we’ll always be there to help,” said Vermeulen.
