Cape Town - After weeks of post-Rugby World Cup speculation, Heyneke Meyer's reign as Springbok coach has come to an end.
Meyer had guided the Springboks to a World Cup semi-final appearance in 2015 and had been vocal on his desires to stay on as coach for another term.
But losses to Argentina in the Rugby Championship and Japan in the World Cup, as well as questions raised over his style of rugby and transformation policy, convinced many that he was not the man to take Springbok rugby forward.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
Heyneke Meyer: “Thank you to the countless faithful, positive and passionate supporters that have made my job as coach a joy."

Surely Eddie Jones must be amongst the favourites for the Springbok job? Due a change of scenery after his lengthy spell with England.

Next test only in June. No need for a panic appointment right now. Make like a scrum and crouch and hold! Alos no need to be for 4 years!

No more post-match beers for Heyneke Meyer with Steve Hansen. Likely he's left before being pushed. A very, very decent man.

#HeynekeMeyer claimed moral high ground before pushed, by doing the right thing after tough 12 months.Decent man crushed by pressure of job.

Heyneke Meyer stands down. Eddie Jones throws hat in the ring. 'I've taken England as far as I can'

Goodbye Heyneke. Probably the most astute tactical move you've made all year. #HeynekeResigns

Meyer's picture was muddled towards the end but believe it was wrong to push him out. You've got to ask if the alternative is any better.
