London - Lock Courtney Lawes re-joined the England squad in Portugal on Monday evening after receiving treatment back home for a back injury.
However, England coach Eddie Jones told England Rugby’s official website that the Northampton Saints forward remains a doubt for Saturday’s Test against South Africa at Twickenham.
Kick-off is at 17:00 SA time.
Lawes returned for specialist treatment on a pre-existing back injury at the weekend, but following his return to camp on Monday it is hoped he will return to light training on Tuesday.
“He came in injured from the (Northampton) game. We did a walk through on Wednesday and he realised it wasn’t right so our medical team got onto it straight away. It was investigated here but it required treatment so he went home.
“At the moment is seems like it’s had the required effect and we will wait and see how he comes in tonight,” Jones said.
Jones is already without experienced lock forward Joe Launchbury and admits the loss of Lawes would be a blow for the side.
“He is a 65-cap player, Lions international, ball carrier and great defender. He would be a big loss so we just have to pick up the slack and that’s the great opportunity of these Test matches.”
Jones will name his side on Thursday.
