Cape Town - Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies is excited for the year ahead for the Springboks despite the national side's struggles in 2016.
Jantjies featured regularly for South Africa throughout the June Tests, Rugby Championship and November tour.
The Springboks had a disastrous 2016 campaign, which saw them only winning four out of their 12 Tests.
Now well into pre-season with the Lions after a stint in Japan, Jantjies feels that the improvements the Springboks are trying to make and last year's wave of new caps will benefit the team this year.
"We are trying to implement certain areas in our game that we have to adapt to at Test level," Jantjies told SuperSport website.
"It is exciting, I must say, just to see a lot of players having their first season, getting their debut at Springbok level as well.
"We have experienced customers as well, and what you learn from them is key to what you learnt from last year as an individual and as a team as well.
"I think it is exciting for SA rugby and for a lot of guys to get that opportunity, lay the foundation that was built last year and to get the opportunity to take this through into 2017 - that will be good for us."
The Springboks kick off their season when they face France in the opening Test of the year on June 10.
