Ex-Springbok Lofty Nel passes away

Cape Town - Former Springbok loose forward Lofty Nel passed away at the age of 80 on Monday.

Nel played 11 Tests at No 8 and flank for the Springboks between 1960 and 1970.

Nel made his Test debut at Ellis Park against the 1960 All Blacks and played his final Test 10 years later against the same opponents - again at Ellis Park. The Boks won both those Tests.

He played provincial rugby for Transvaal (now called Lions), Western Transvaal (Leopards) and South Eastern Transvaal (Pumas).
