Springboks call up Visagie

Cape Town - Bulls hooker Callie Visagie has joined the Springbok training squad in Durban following the suspension of Adriaan Strauss of the Cheetahs.

Strauss was cited and suspended for three games for an illegal tackle in the Super Rugby match between the Stormers and Cheetahs in Cape Town last Saturday. He will only be available to play again on June 22.

“Adriaan’s suspension means we’ve lost another one of the leaders in our squad for some time, but this is a great opportunity for Callie,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Of the players who have been part of Springbok squads in the last two seasons, Scarra Ntubeni, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Tiaan Liebenberg are injured, while Schalk Brits and Craig Burden are playing in club finals this weekend and aren’t available for the camp.

“Callie has been in good form in the last few weeks. Apart from being a very strong scrummager, his lineout throwing is pin-point and he knows Flip van der Merwe and Victor Matfield well. He also has a very high workrate.”

Visagie joined the squad in Durban on Monday. Strauss will remain at the training camp, which concludes on Wednesday.
