Cape Town - Former Springbok captain Corné Krige says current skipper Jean de Villiers should be carefully managed ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup in England.
Krige, who captained the Boks at the 2003 World Cup, believes De Villiers is being overplayed.
De Villiers is currently out of action for eight weeks with a knee injury and will miss the Springboks' first four Tests of the year as well as the end of the Stormers' Super Rugby campaign.
He will only be ready for the Boks' Rugby Championship campaign starting in August.
Krige, in an interview with the EWN Sport website, said South Africa should look at what New Zealand did with Richie McCaw and Dan Carter when it comes to resting their top players.
Carter and McCaw have taken sabbaticals out of Super Rugby in order to be better rested for the rigours on Test rugby.
Krige feels a similar ploy where De Villiers misses some parts of next year's Super Rugby competition would be wise with the World Cup in mind.
The Boks start their year with a game against the World XV at Newlands on June 7, followed by two Tests against Wales (Durban, June 14 and Nelspruit, June 21) and one against Scotland (Port Elizabeth, June 28).
