Etzebeth op a success

Cape Town - Springbok and Stormers lock Eben Etzebeth has confirmed on Monday that the operation on his injured foot, which could sideline him for up to 18 weeks, was a success.

Etzebeth, 22, injured his foot in the Springboks' final Test of 2013 against France in Paris.

The initial diagnosis had him ruled out for almost half a year, but upon further examination from a specialist, Etzebeth should expect to be fully rehabilitated from the operation within 16-18 weeks.

Etzebeth took to his Twitter account to thank those who have given him support over the last week.

"Thanks for all the support, operation was a success. Enjoy the rest of your week people!"

Etzebeth is one of five nominees in line for the IRB's prestigious player of the year award for the year 2013.

The other nominees are Leigh Halfpenny (Wales and British & Irish Lions), Sergio Parisse (Italy), Kieran Read (New Zealand) and Ben Smith (New Zealand).

An independent IRB awards panel, chaired by Australia’s RWC 1999 winning captain John Eales were scheduled to reconvene following the conclusion of the November Tests to make their final decision and make the official announcement.

Sport24 will confirm the announcement once it has been made.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
