Durban - Springbok captain John Smit underwent a successful operation to repair a chronic cervical disc here on Wednesday morning.
Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said the procedure was carried out to ensure that the disc did not get progressively worse. “It will also ensure John’s availability for the Springboks and the Sharks for the 2011 season,” Roberts added.
Confirming the success of the procedure, Roberts, said: “The timing was right for John to undergo surgery as he will now have a prolonged period of recovery in advance of the new season.
"This was not a career threatening injury,” Roberts added.
Smit, who has been on the Springbok conditioning programme, will be sidelined for three months and is therefore not available for the Springbok tour to Europe in November and December.
The Springbok captain is recovering and is not available for comment.
