Sharks crowned SARU champs

Pretoria - Tournament favourites The Sharks and hosts, Blue Bulls, were crowned champions in the men's and women's section respectively at the 2012 SARU Interprovincial Sevens at Loftus in Pretoria on Saturday.

The team from KwaZulu-Natal fielded a powerful team and they deservedly won the Cup after beating Eastern Province 29-14 in a tense final. The EP Kings played some of the best Sevens at the two-day tournament, but they were no match for the favourites in the final.

The Sharks won their quarter-final 28-0 against the Golden Lions and in the semis they defeated the Free State Cheetahs 24-7 after the Bloemfontein side offered stubborn resistance during the first half.

Rosco Speckman, the lively Sharks playmaker, had a good tournament and was named the Player of the Tournament ahead of team mates Sibu Sithole, Tera Mthembu and Milo Nqoro. He would no doubt have caught the attention of Paul Treu, the Springbok Sevens coach, and Elite Player Development squad management members Marius Schoeman and Neil Powell, who were all in attendance.

The EP Kings booked their place in the men's Cup final after beating Valke 22-13 in the first upset of the day. The EP side then got the better of Western Province by 19-7 to book a meeting with The Sharks in the final.

In the Women's section the Blue Bulls lifted the crown with a comprehensive 28-0 win over Western Province. The Pretoria women qualified for the final after beating the Golden Lions 47-0 and then defeating KZN 26-0 in the last four.

Blue Bulls centre Marithy Pienaar was the standout player and thoroughly deserves her Player of the Tournament accolade. Shona-Leah Weston, Cindy Cant and Mapume Maseko also impressed for the Blue Bulls women.

Boland returned home with two trophies after their men and women won their respective Plate-finals. The Boland women won 21-7 against Free State whilst their men's colleagues outplayed the Blue Bulls 33-21 in the Plate final.

Thank fk it wasn't the Bulls vs WP in the final. If the Bulls lost they'd be blaming the ref & if WP won they'd also be blaming the ref.

The only reason you want me to shut my pap hole is coz you know I'm right... on both counts. Lol.

The Bulls are our flagship team, no question

Dowwe paramedic, I have a question. How many trophies are there in "our flagship team's" trophy cabinet?

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-05 07:26

Dowwe paramedic, I have a tip for you: you don't need to take off your shoes for this mathematical problem. You only need a couple of fingers.

  • lean.sadie - 2012-11-04 00:04

Well done Bulls woman. Maybe some of you should go play for the men side, show them how to play running rugby.

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-11-04 00:29

Ha ha ha, no big surprise that the Bulls chicks took it, they can open a Windhoek with their eye sockets.

Bulls dominate in all forms of the game

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-04 23:43

@real lean.sadie. I think the Bulls team are already full of women - look at Pierre Spies, Wallaby Hougaard and Turnstile Steyn for example. @dowwe paramedic. Good to see you're back. Had a bad week? Two weeks? Two years? So the Bulls dominate in all forms of the game? So do they have the S15 trophy? No. Currie Cup maybe? No. Under 19's? No. Vodacom Cup? No. Conference Cup? No. 7's trophy? No. So where is the domination? Your post was written in present tense, not past tense, so I assume we are talking about the here and now. The Bulls had to rely on their women 7's and laaities (u/21's) to put some silverware in their trophy cabinet. Is that why they are wearing pink? I think you should crawl back into that hole where you were hiding last week.

Thanks Chrissie, that hole was my wine cellar i fell into from laughter at another ref clearly handing the game to WP from the first minute. Gelukkig hou ek my nie met sn@t op nie, lekker in my spogkar rondgery, my views van my 4de verdieping patio geniet en nog $90 000 in die laaste 2 weke verdien. Life is good

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-05 07:25

En skielik voel ek soos 'n breinchirurg......

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-05 07:32

Ek kry die idee daai kelder van jou begin bietjie suur te ruik. Net 'n klomp suur druiwe daarbinne sou ek se. Gee my gou 'n paar voorbeelde waar die ref die WP gehelp het in die final. Ek sal graag wil weet waarna jy verwys.

the bulls are no more the threat they use to be but their female counter part is taking that part lol go and cook pink boys

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-05 02:30

The Bulls women's team will probably beat the men's team at the moment. I think that is why they are gradually moving to the pink jerseys. Next year we will see the women play in the S15.

      lean.sadie.96 - 2012-11-05 06:24

@chrissie Nou nie juis die grappie van die jaar nie. Shamepies, soek mamma se seuntjie bietjie aandag jong?

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-05 07:25

Just stating the facts, as you would say.
