Sex claim has shattered Davies

2011-10-09 16:38

Cape Town - SuperSport TV presenter Peter Davies and his family are "shattered" after he appeared in court on a charge of sexual assault.

According to the Rapport newspaper, Davies appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, facing charges of sexually assaulting a minor. The boy claims the incident appeared in the Virgin Active gymnasium in Randburg.

SuperSport has subsequently taken Davies off air pending the outcome of the court case. Davies was due to host the Rugby World Cup programme, 'Kia Ora New Zealand'.

Davies's lawyer, Peter Grealy, says his client faces a whole bunch of statutory charges regarding the the bill on sexual transgressions.

Davies apparently exposed himself and masturbated in front of the boy, but is yet to plead in court on the charges.

Grealy described the charges as "serious".

Davies told Rapport his wife and two daughters, aged six and eight, are shattered by the news.

SuperSport's spokesperson, Clinton van der Berg, says Davies has not been fired but agreed not to broadcast while the court case is still pending. He will still receive a salary.

"We cannot speculate on the matter and he is innocent until proven guilty," said Van der Berg.

  • joshreader - 2011-10-09 17:41

He "apparently" exposed himself? There is a world of difference between "allegedly" and "apparently." The latter at least implies that Davies is guilty. From both a legal and journalistic standpoint, the choice of words is, at best, bad form - at worst, libelous.

ap·par·ent·ly/?'par?ntle/ Adverb: As far as one knows or can see: "the child nodded, apparently content with the promise". Used by speakers or writers to avoid committing themselves to the truth of what they are saying. Synonyms: evidently - obviously - seemingly - clearly

You should have thought of you wife and kids while you were out perving idiot! This kind of behaviour is all too common in these gym showers. High time somebody does something about it!!!

      Mikemcc - 2011-10-09 20:16

@Nic, What type of sh!hole gym do you use if this type of thing is common?

      Superdude - 2011-10-09 20:19

What gyms do you frequent, and if you see it, why dont you do something about it? Davies is innocent until proven guilty, so hold your tongue.

      AMS-Dammer - 2011-10-09 22:17

  • RuthK - 2011-10-09 18:02

Get real. The oy is making it up. What adolescent's parents allow the child to run around a gym locker room unsupervised to begin with. The boy jumped into the sauna with two men in towels, walks around a gym locker room and then complains of nakedness! Get real! Ever been to gym, there are always people naked in the locker room. For all we know he was drying himself after a shower and some kid took an opportunity to get attention. I'm not sure i'll believe the charges until i hear all the evidence.

      Breazzy - 2011-10-09 21:34

How can you accuse a child of making such allegations up? Let the law play its course, and in any case Peter Davies doesnt seem to have even notified his employers about such a case, as might have been in a situation were innocence is contemplated. This is insensitive especially in a country with very high rates of sexual crimes, this is why people are afraid to report, because of such reckless statements.

  • Adroflhitlol - 2011-10-09 18:04

or wait...he wanted to touch him on his studio!

  • JohnPicarra - 2011-10-09 18:11

I wonder if Super Sport is under attack by some comrades/tsotsis/gangsters/drug runners?

  • Winsome - 2011-10-09 18:19

Please just wait until the court case and verdict before finding this man guilty! Some of the comments are really so judgemental - and we dont even know the full story yet, News 24 doesnt always give all the facts either. What was that youngster doing alone in the gym anyway, where are his parents in all this?

      Jaco - 2011-10-09 19:41

I agreed with your post - then you ruined it all with your last sentence. As you've just said, News24 doesn't give all the facts. Then all of a sudden you assume the youngster was alone, and the parents' whereabouts unknown...? Nevertheless, did your own parents watch every single move you ever made in public places until you were 16 years old? I'm sure they kept an eye on you, but I doubt they totally coddled and smothered you at the same time. Pretty easy to blame the parents when we have no idea if they can or should be blamed at all. Besides, if you have to blame, blame the father only - if he has a father at present. Mothers aren't allowed in male dressing rooms as far as I know.

  • TRC911 - 2011-10-09 18:49

that is diguisting...a family man doing that in front of kids.

      duna - 2011-10-09 19:00

@TRC You idiot, you have no idea have you? Have you thought for one second, prick! Perhaps the boy is looking for R50 to sell his story to the press............ has that even crossed your mind ? You probably delirious.

      Andrew - 2011-10-09 19:46

@Duna. Agree fully, remember a couple of years ago they had a go at the film critic Leon van Nierhop (spelling?). They almost destroyed him on what I think was a paedeophile charge, I think it wrecked his career, have not seen him in the media since. He was flound innocent. Not saying the story is untrue but the problem with the media nowdays is that with the advent of e-reporting, reporting is both poor both gramatically and from a content point of view. Unfortunately many will never see Peter in the same light after this story, even if innocent.

  • forafrica - 2011-10-09 18:51

I do not read the comments ... The Law must take its coarse ... We have to respect the families on both sides and then we have to keep our big mouths shut ... if it happened it is a sad day for all of us and the guilty must be punished. Weather it happened or not has very little to do with us ... we have merely a interest to the point of justice being done ...

  • czovczov - 2011-10-09 19:00

The problem is that we have too many closet homosexuals.

      Jaco - 2011-10-09 19:30

Any solution to this "problem", eh, mister shades?

  • Atholl - 2011-10-09 20:02

"Davies's lawyer, Peter Grealy, says his client faces a whole bunch of statutory charges regarding the the bill on sexual transgressions." There are also laws regarding perjury, defamation, slander and crimen injuria - that carry heavy penalties of imprisonment ... If I were Mr Davies, and innocent as an angel -- I'd keep a close watch on the person representing your own cause, Mr Davies. And of particular importance is the other adult in the sauna, - is he known to you, his behaviour, Y did he leave (you two alone) - does he know the boy (or parents) Things happen ..... things ..... There is always a {motive} a {modus operandi} and of course {evidence} ........... just like OJ .......

  • MrMojoRisin - 2011-10-09 20:24

Like to hear his side in the court . . . apparently he is a master debater.

  • Daniel du Plessis - 2011-10-09 20:41

the little boy is probably devastated and in need of counselliing and a little pay-off and can't wait to get back to the gym - I go very regularly to various gyms - I've seen guys showing off their parts and I've seen willing voyeuers. I've told guys to behave themselves and I've complained. NO problem with the guys walking around naked - it does get a bit disturbing when they start paying with themselves. It is unfortunately an environment where some guys do get turned on - and youg guys even more so - the behaviour not necessarily being homosexual - but to call the man a pedofile is too much - it is slanderous- the kid probably needs a good chat with his dad and if the newsreader did get a hardon then he should be more discrete - we are not animals - Im sure he would be abel to find some private venue nad/or group where he could display himself in all his glore without anyone complaining - rather go there and don't make the gym unpleasant for people who go there to exercise and relax in the steamroom/sauna - that is to all the guys who sit there and fiddle.
