The South African men's team, the Blitzboks, beat Japan 49-0 in their opening game on Friday, beat Fiji 26-14 and the United States 21-15 on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Blitzboks easily dealt with Kenya 17-5 in the quarter-finals and France 21-14 in the semi-finals. 

South Africa went onto lose 5-7 their Cup final against New Zealand in a tightly contested match in Cape Town.

The SA women, Imbokodo, lost 40-0 to New Zealand on Friday night. Their two matches on Saturday saw them go down 31-12 to Russia and 27-5 to Fiji. They will face Spain in the ninth-place playoff match at 13:33 on Sunday.
