SA trio crack nod for Dream Team

Cape Town - Despite a disappointing end to the Sevens World Series, three South Africans have been included in the Dream Team for the 2014/15 season.

The Blitzbokke finished the 2014/2015 Sevens World Series as runners-up to Fiji, who ended South Africa’s quest for the overall title with a 19-7 Cup quarter-final win at the London Sevens on Sunday.

The Blitzbokke had a chance to clinch the World Series at Twickenham on Sunday, but Fiji’s eventual progression to the Cup semi-finals ensured them the overall title.

The USA were surprising winners in London, thumping Australia - who defeated Fiji in the semi-finals - 45-22 in the final.

South Africa, meanwhile, finished as Plate runners-up after going down 26-14 to New Zealand in the lower-grade final.

The Blitzbokke at least bagged Olympic Games qualification in Rio de Janeiro for 2016 and took second spot overall on the season log.

They will also take heart from the fact that Seabelo Senatla, Werner Kok and Kwagga Smith all made into the Dream Team for the 2014/15 series.

Other players included in the team were England’s Tom Mitchell, America’s Zack Test and the Fijian duo of Semi Kunatani and Osea Kolinisau.

Three from the Dream Team - Senatla, Kok and Kunatani - were also nominated for the 2015 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year award.

They were voted by the management teams of the 15 core sides who compete at all nine rounds of the World Series.

The winner will be announced at the World Rugby Awards dinner on Sunday, November 1 at Battersea Evolution, London following the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.
