Cape Town - Former Blitzbokke coach Paul Treu is likely to be named as the new coach of the Kenyan Sevens team.

According to Kenyan newspaper, The Daily Nation, Treu, 42, was scheduled to be unveiled as Kenya's new coach on Wednesday, but the SA Rugby Union reportedly refused to release him before his contract officially expires in October.

Treu vacated his position as Springbok Sevens coach last month, despite earlier stating his desire to lead the team to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Treu now appears to be the favourite to replace Mike Friday, who resigned as Kenya coach in August.

Kenyan Rugby Union (KRU) chairperson Mwangi Muthee confirmed their interest in Treu's services, but said they have 14 applicants for the job.

"There are several bottlenecks which we hope to clear," Muthee told the newspaper, stating the new coach can only take over after the opening leg of the 2013/14 Sevens World Series on October 5 and 6.

"Stakes are high and so are the choices of coaches around the world. Let me reiterate that we are still in the process of identifying who is going to be the Kenya Sevens coach.

"Yes, (Paul) Treu was around, but we still have things that we need to clear."

Treu was appointed as Blitzbokke coach in 2004 after representing the team from 1999 to 2002 at sweeper and later as captain.

As coach he led the team to the Sevens World Series title in 2008/09 and won 14 tournaments on the circuit.

He coached the team in three Sevens Rugby World Cups and took the team to bronze at the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010.
