Blitzbokke off to perfect start

Cape Town - The South African Sevens rugby team have won both their opening games at the Gold Coast Sevens event in Australia.

The Blitzbokke saw off Wales in their opening game 19-12, through tries from Cecil Africa and Seabelo Senatla along with a penalty try before taking on American Samao in their later game.

American Samoa were no match for a strong Blitzbokke side, who ran in six unanswered tries including three from debutant Ruhan Nel, in a 48-0 win.

Nel said after the match: “It’s such an honour playing for my country and I knew that if I get two minutes on the field, it would be amazing."

"I knew I needed to do anything that I can and everything. When I got on I thought ‘Ruhan, maybe you can get a try’ but when the second came I was thankful.

"When the third came, I was like ‘oh my word’, it can’t get better. I am blessed and thankful for being here,” said the delighted new Blitzbokke star.

South Africa next face Kenya at 10:17 (SA time) in their final Pool B match.

New Zealand and Samoa are also both undefeated in Pool A while Argentina top Pool D.

The Sevens tour moves to Dubai for round two on 5 December before Port Elizabeth hosts the South Africa leg on 13-14 December.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
