Blitzbokke hit the kitchen

Cape Town - Executive chef of The Tsonga Sun Hotel and MasterChef South Africa judge, Benny Masekwameng, put the Blitzbokke to the ultimate test away from the four white lines.

After the team announcement for the next leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai, a fun activity was on the cards for the boys to unwind with a cook-off challenge.

Lemon, salt, rice, icing sugar, lentils, cashew nuts, chutney and raisins were among the 20 ingredients to be named within 35 seconds by the eager players and respected media in the first challenge.

The competitive nature was sensed from the boys in green and they definitely seized the opportunity by sidestepping opponents around the table to test the ingredients. Attacking from behind and good vision saw six players go through to the next round.

Chris Dry, Phillip Snyman, Frankie Horne, Cornal Hendricks, Stephen Dippenaar and Steven Hunt all moved on to the whisking challenge.

Three eggs, two bowls, one whisker and agility were all that was needed for this challenge to be completed. Along with the players, two media contestants and two Blitzbokke management staff also qualified from the first round.

Instructions from Chef Benny were to separate the egg whites from the yolk and whisk until the egg whites gets firm. Dry and Hunt were the stand out players relying on their timing and ability to gain momentum from ongoing phases, which in this case was finding rhythm while whisking.

Once finished, the result had to be tested and contestants had to tip the bowl over their heads for five seconds to see whether it was done perfectly; with no knock ons’ surprisingly.

Final round; decorate a cake in seven minutes. The amount of work that goes into a cake should not be taken for granted, for all the easy effort it is to eat it. A chance to rely on instinct and flair was handed to the players, which they often have in the sevens game because most of the time making something out of nothing needs to be of second nature.

The contestants had a variety of ingredients to play around with and hopeful there end product of creativity can convince the judges to award them the prize of a two nights stay at any Tsonga Sun Hotel in the country.

Open play is what excites a crowd in rugby and the guys were quick to put on a show with the amounts of inventiveness they displayed.

In the end though, it was Steven Hunt who won the prize for the 'best Blitzbokke cake'.
