Schoolboy kickers worry Braam

Cape Town - Former Springbok flyhalf Braam van Straaten is not impressed with the quality of goal-kicking from South Africa's top schoolboys.

Van Straaten, who has worked as Australia's kicking coach for the last few years, attended the recent Wildeklawer SuperSchools event held at Diamantveld High School in Kimberley.

Some of the country's top schools were in action, including big names like Paarl Gymnasium, Grey College, Affies, and Paul Roos.

Van Straaten told Volksblad the goal-kickers were poor, despite the windy conditions.

"I believe the kicking is not up to standard. Here are one or two chaps that kick really well, but they'll have to look at their technique."

The former Bok believes the wind definitely played a role in the kickers' accuracy. "It's a skill to kick in the wind and these kickers are not kicking well in the wind.

"If something lacks in a kicker's technique it shows up under pressure. A few of them are not too bad. I think it's just to get them at a level where they kick well under pressure," said Van Straaten

He suggests they get someone to help them work on their techniques in order to improve.

Apart from the Craven Week, the Wildeklawer SuperSchools event is the biggest schools event in the country.
