Saracens' Burger banned

Dublin - Saracens flanker Jacques Burger will be available to play in the European Champions Cup semi-final against Clermont after receiving just a one-week ban for foul play on Thursday.

The Namibia back-row forward has been accused of striking Racing Metro and France scrum-half Maxime Machenaud during Saracens's 12-11 quarter-final win last weekend by citing commissioner Eugene Ryan of Ireland.

A disciplinary hearing on Thursday saw Burger banned for one week, meaning he will miss Saturday's English Premiership match against play-off rivals Leicester.

However, he is free to play again on April 13 and will be available to London club Saracens for their match against Clermont in Saint Etienne on April 18.

After hearing evidence from Burger, who pleaded guilty, match officials and Saracens staff, independent judicial officer Simon Thomas (Wales) determined the offence was reckless and warranted a red card.

However, he also ruled that it was at the low end (two weeks) of World Rugby's sanctions for offences of this nature.

There were no aggravating factors and Thomas reduced the suspension by the maximum amount of one week due to the player's guilty plea, early expression of remorse, good conduct during the hearing and clean disciplinary record.
