SA schools side named

2012-08-09 19:13

Cape Town - The national selectors have named the SA Schools team for the Under-18 International Series opening match on Friday against France at the Hugenote High School in Wellington.

The match starts at 17:00 while Six Nations rivals England and Wales will get the series underway in the first match at 15:00.

Powerful Blue Bulls prop Pierre Schoeman, in his second year as a SA Schools player, will captain the team which boasts a macro pack of forwards. Schoeman will partner fellow Blue Bulls prop Dayan van der Westhuizen in the front row, while mobile Golden Lions hooker Malcolm Marx will pack between the burly props. Interestingly, Marx played flank for the Golden Lions Under-16 Craven Week team a few seasons ago.

The SA Schools team will especially look to their towering locks, John-Dave Schickerling and Gideon Koegelenberg, to secure lineout possession so that scrumhalf Justin Phillips can feed the backline which will be marshaled by SA Under-20 flyhalf, Handré Pollard.

The Western Province pivot is the team’s most experienced player and he made history earlier this year by becoming the first schoolboy to play for the SA Under-20 team, who recently won the IRB Junior World Championship trophy in thrilling fashion on home soil.

Pollard, like Schickerling, plays his school rugby in the colours of Paarl Gymnasium, currently the No 1-ranked schools rugby side in the country. Furthermore, the match will be an extra special occasion for Koegelenberg as the No 4 lock will make his SA Schools debut on his home ground in Wellington.

Eastern Province flyer Sergeal Petersen was the outstanding wing at the recent Under-18 Craven Week in Port Elizabeth and he will run our as right wing, while Duhan van der Merwe of SWD will play in the number 11 jersey.

Identical twins Jean-Luc du Preez (No 7) and Daniël du Preez of KwaZulu-Natal - the sons of former Springbok scrumhalf Robert du Preez - were also included in the match 23.

      bernard.mackenzie.5 - 2012-08-09 23:42

i find it strange how little ep players are included seems with this whole ep kings saga they keep saying they have tons of school any talent that gets bought when they go to further studies? but seems at school any level they already lack,

      steyts - 2012-08-10 07:40

It's not a grammar lesson, it is a spelling lesson.... Anyway, looks like a very strong team!! Hope they do well...

Solank daar goeieskole is in Pretoria is, sal daar altyd goeie sportmanne wees.

THE END!!!!

You all brag about schools and the talent blah blah but the only reason these okes go to grey and Paarl is to be noticed by a bulls scout. It's got f all to do with free state or province. They live there and wanna play for the bulls so they try get into their closest big rugby school. If they get signed to another province, they failed

      paul.sdoow - 2012-08-10 09:55

i didn't realise that paarl gym , paarl boys , Paul Roos, drosdy are in pretoria?

      paul.sdoow - 2012-08-10 10:03

and no we old boys of those schools didn't go there to play for bulls ! that's a laugh! we went to those schools(PRG for me) cause of tradition and history of the school! and yes i am a proud old boy of Paul Roos . i ain't ashamed to tell people when they ask.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-10 10:04

@steyts, jy en die skrywer v.d. artikel is nie 'up to speed' met die latest ontwikkelinge nie. Affies is No. 1 skool in SA nie Paarl nie. En oja, Affies is in PRETORIA. - Lekker dag’s-top-50-school-rugby-rankings-25-july-2012/

Hope They do Well. Just to Bad a Blue Bull is always first on cammand to criticise any team. It's actually a shame that they are counted as "the best sportsperson's" in S.A Rugby, and yet they can't say anything good from another rugby union.

      nick.mullet.35 - 2012-08-10 08:54

Actually I can say nice things about the wp, they look very well groomed while choking

      nick.mullet.35 - 2012-08-10 08:56

And they are VERY consistent at it

      piet.poggenpoel.923 - 2012-08-10 09:20

You people are a joke actually. Can't believe that there are such Abortion survivors like you guys, imagine how much better the rugby world & news would've been if they allowed abortion's sooner in S.A?

      nick.mullet.35 - 2012-08-10 09:28

I said something good now you insult me you racist

      ddnjozela - 2012-08-10 10:25

When last did the bulls win something..thier props are horrible, Greyling and Kruger.. their fyhalf lost direction..if anything id say the bulls brag about thier past victories, i think its better to choke in a semi having won the SA confrence 4 the second time then 2 always lose @ quaters with no trophy.. blue bulls id say suck..

      nick.mullet.35 - 2012-08-10 18:22

I haven't lost a quarter chicken in my life. You think Ndungane, Kirchner, Basson, Chiliboy would let someone take their quarter ? No ways!
