SA Schools squad announced

Polokwane - SARU have announced the 28-man SA Schools squad on Saturday that will feature in an Under-18 International series in August.

The squad was chosen by a panel featuring national selectors Peter Jooste and Ian McIntosh, the SA Schools selectors led by convener Henkie Green, and SA under-20 coach Dawie Theron following the conclusion of the 50th Coca-Cola Craven Week in Polokwane.

The team will meet England at City Park Stadium in Cape Town on August 9, followed by clashes against France in George on August 13 and Wales in Wellington on August 17.

An Italian Under-18 squad will also feature in a series against the Western Province, Boland and SWD Coca-Cola Craven Week teams in August.

Nine players in the squad named were part of the SA Schools class of 2012 that registered a clean-sweep of victories against their European counterparts.

These players are Jurie Linde, Justin Phillips, Abongile Nonkontwana (Blue Bulls), Ox Nche (Free State), twins Jean-Luc du Preez and Daniel du Preez (KZN), Duhan van der Merwe, Warrik Galant (SWD) and JD Schickerling (WP).

Schickerling and Galant, however, were forced to withdraw from their Craven Week teams due to injury, but will be available for selection for the international clashes.

Chris October from Western Province will again assume the position of head coach, with the Griffon’s Roean Bezuidenhoudt assisting.

David Coert from Boland has retained the position as team manager.

"We are pleased with the quality of the squad selected," said Peter Jooste, SARU’s convener of national selectors.

"That said I must admit it was tough selecting only 28 players because there were several other talented players in the mix.

"But unfortunately there will always be a few unlucky players."

Jooste also used the opportunity to praise the high quality of rugby played in the tournament this year.

"The standard of the Coca-Cola Craven Week certainly improved this year," said Jooste.

"In terms of the quality of rugby played it was definitely one of the better tournaments, and it was particularly encouraging to see a few teams such as the Pumas, Zimbabwe and Namibia raise their game."

Too many Bulls. How did they pick 5 Bulls. From a team that was totally out of their depth and below standard. Looks like Heyneke picked this team.

AC passop , die aasvoels van die noorde is besig om in te kom !!!!!!

Melt en Isak ek stem ook saam. How can you choose a team and then include players that aren't good enough. This hole week I were crossed about a selection policy, we are in the year 2013. There must be out of the 22 man squad 9 players off colour. F-off. We want to win and get the stadiums full. Race wont fill the pavilions and get the sponsors. Choose the best players, it is easy don't include players just on a race basis to please a government that means nothing. ANC is corrupt, so you must not fall into the same hole. You that do such things as not select the best will never be blessed. There is players out there that you haven't chose on a colour of there skin basis, ridicules shame on you.

Ag nee Jan...regtig??

Not even 1 player from the Valke! What about Cameron Rooi - such a good player (and coloured too) Selection not good!

      Jan Brand - 2013-07-14 09:55

      Meliny Holmes - 2013-07-14 10:08

I think it is shocking that no Valke players were selected. There were a few names who stood out, but yet not even one player selected.

      Andre Botes - 2013-07-14 14:27

I think its shocking that the valke expect to have players in the squad. They drew one and lost one and won 1. And the one they drew and lost was against probably the weaker sides. The leopards, griffons,ep cd and guys like junior bester from the gruquas cd side are a lot more unlucky.

Where is MATHEWW SAGE of westerm provimce,he was gOod all craven week?

      Chrisin Oz - 2013-07-14 23:21

Probably needed to give up his spot to a quota Bulls player. I hate BBEE. Blue Bull Economic Empowerment. It's ruining SA sport.

  • Willem Kotzé - 2013-07-14 11:30

So there are two Daniel Du Plessis's in the squad?

  • Nico Eksteen - 2013-07-15 08:35

Why so few WP players? They dominated the whole week. Again not selecting the best will be our downfall

      Nico Eksteen - 2013-07-15 08:38

And only one from the Lions who actually played in the final game against WP.

  • Nico Eksteen - 2013-07-15 08:44

Are these Du Preez laaities both Robert du Preez's sons? I watched them and they aren't that great.

      Andre Brink - 2013-07-15 13:07

They are twins, so I would figure that they have the same father.

  • Alexandria Tshepang Mari - 2013-07-15 13:24

  • Bennie Schonfeldt - 2013-07-15 13:47
