S15 draw: Kings open v Force

2012-09-21 07:19

Cape Town - Super Rugby makes its long-awaited return to the Eastern Cape on February 23 next year when the Southern Kings host Australia’s Western Force (kick off 19:10) in the final match of the first full round.

DRAW: 2013 Super Rugby tournament

The Southern Kings kick off their debut season in the tournament at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth at the end of a round otherwise studded with conference derbies.

The Sharks played one match in Port Elizabeth in 1998 and a second in 1999 as well as one match in East London in the latter year.

This year's finalists travel to Bloemfontein to meet the Cheetahs (kick off 17:05) while the season opens in South Africa with the North-South derby at Loftus Versfeld with the Bulls hosting 2012 conference winners, the Stormers.

The fixtures were announced by SANZAR on Friday in a new-look draw which features a staggered start, and staggered resumption after the June internationals, to accommodate the British & Irish Lions’ tour of Australia.

The Australian teams kick off one week earlier, and close one week later, as well as resuming two weeks later in July after the international window, in order to manage the extended Lions’ schedule.

South Africa’s conference is unaffected with the Kings going into the bye week SA’s first round and then hosting the Sharks in the third round of South African action.

They then host the champion Chiefs in round five before heading overseas for the first time for matches against the Crusaders, Hurricanes, Brumbies and Rebels.

The Sharks have their first home match in South Africa’s second round when they face the Stormers, who play their first home match in Cape Town on March 9.

The tournament actually kicks off on February 15 but only Australian Conference teams will be in action. The same will occur in round 17 (just before the Super Rugby season ‘breaks’ for the June inbounds), while rounds 18 and 19 (after the break) will feature only New Zealand and South African Conference teams.

“The Lions tour to Australia presented some unique challenges in preparing the 2013 Super Rugby draw,” SANZAR CEO Greg Peters said.

“We are very appreciative of the cooperation we received from the National Unions and broadcasters in preparing this draw and working through the issues.”

Peters said there was much excitement building despite being months out.

“Over the last two seasons we have seen two franchises - the Reds and the Chiefs - win the Super Rugby trophy for the first time,” Peters said.

“The emphasis in early rounds is again on local derbies that have again proven to be the most watched and attended matches in 2012.”

There is Sunday play in 2013 with the Blues hosting the Bulls in round four, while the Waratahs will host consecutive Sunday fixtures in rounds six and seven - with the Crusaders, Brumbies and Force other teams to play on the last day of the weekend throughout the season.

Peters said the draw would build on the successes of 2012.

“The 2012 Super Rugby season was the most watched season of Super Rugby ever, both in terms of those attending matches live and also viewing on television. The 2013 draw will hopefully see us grow those numbers again,” he said.

The Super Rugby finals series starts on Friday, July 19, with the Super Rugby qualifiers scheduled for that weekend - while the Super Rugby semi-finals will take place on July 26/27, with the Super Rugby final to be played on Saturday, August 3.

Hahahahaha can't wait to see them get whiped

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-21 07:55

Let's support this new SA team like we do all our sides.

      jacobus.vandermerwe.9 - 2012-09-21 08:21

      @Charles No we won't

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-21 08:40

Nope, not gonna support EVERYONE playing against them :)

      macziekpk - 2012-09-21 08:44

I don't support the Stormers ever. So it would only be fair to support the Kings instead.

      vernon.annandale.7 - 2012-09-21 08:45

Ill sup a team that has earned the right to play S15,this was all about giving EC players a go and to promote players of colour, now he is buying white players from all over and wants the rules changed to suit him? F#*@ that! This undeserving team and the Watson clan will never ever hav my sup!

      uwe.klopfer - 2012-09-21 08:58

@Charles...hahahahahaha... how about his : NO. hopefully they equal the bulls and lion record of no wins in 1 season, but add to that most tries leaked, biggest point difference, biggest loss...the list goes on. My problem is not that they got promoted to Super rugby, it is how they got there. They main rugby union (EP) cannot even get into the Premier Division currie cup... Oh...and they have pukey there

      simon.berry.925 - 2012-09-21 09:03

I have already put in my superbru pick, Force by 28

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-21 09:39

I got nothing against the Eastern Cape per se as I still have relatives over there, but that Luke Watson is a class clown & village idiot when he said that "wearing the Springbok shirt made him feel physically sick due to him believing it was a symbol of apartheid".So how can anyone in South African rugby support a franchise that has a leader and player like that? How he can be so opposed to one system of equality(Apartheid) and happily bask in another with the injustice that was the Super Kings saga with his own dad at the helm, is shocking to say the least.Watson has had a big gripe against South African Rugby and refused to play for the springboks. This was part of the reason why he moved to Bath a few years ago.

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-09-21 10:06

we dont need ur support in any case u chops ...

      claudia.meads - 2012-09-21 10:22

... BOYCOTT THE KINGS..!! Celebrate each time they lose..!! Have a massive party each time they lose - celebrate it as a victory over the ANC..!! The Kings represent everything that is wrong with South Africa today - support them and you support cronyism, corruption, mediocrity, the murder of merit and all things alike... Do not attend ANY games the Kings play in, not in SA, not in Australia (particularly the large ex-pat community in Perth) and not in NZ. Do not watch it on TV, do not read articles about it, practice a complete boycott, as was done with ABSA, with SAA, etc. If you do not stop this in its tracks from day one, this evil will consume you and before you know it, merit will be completely removed from our society and sport will disappear in its entirety. THE VERY ESSENCE OF SPORT IS MERIT..!! I do not know much about rugby, I just know it is a massively impressive game, it is complex, fast paced and supremely physical – DO NOT ALLOW THIS PRECIOUS GAME TO BE DESTROYED BY THE ANC.

      hallo.daar.56 - 2012-09-21 13:04

Can't do much worse than the Lions.

      hallo.daar.56 - 2012-09-21 13:05

The Kings are not an ANC team you morons.

      graham.forbes.359 - 2012-09-21 13:25

Claudia... you are a complete IDIOT! That comment alone illustrates the world you live in, a world where the people around you are influencing your judgement. Learn the game before you make such rediculous comments.

      dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-09-21 07:59

sean any big signings for the Lions for the 2013 season ?? LOL!!!

      francois.lombard.90 - 2012-09-21 08:08

Kings on the rise? To nowhere maybe. Now they are looking for overseas players cos no one wants to play for them. And as for the LIONS! See Currie cup champs this year again. But its good that the Kings have a supporter or 2. Cheeky needs u.

      dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-09-21 08:21

francois ... whoopie doo ... Lions won a Vodacom Cup Std Currie Cup last year... they wont this year .. it was made clear when the Lions lost most of their matches in Super Rugby... BTW Lions dont even have enough money to buy Vaseline for Elton's hair

      gerald.parker.3956 - 2012-09-21 08:26

Dieter is that a new flour and yeast combo

      david.w.bakker - 2012-09-21 11:05

HaHa. Cannot wait to see the kings lose all their games. Don't like the Watson's. The manner in which they got into the super15. This will only make the Lions stronger. This may have been a blessing. I am sure the Lions will play the kings in a warm up game here at Ellis park.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-09-22 21:28

Lions top of the Currie Cup Premier Division, can't find the Kings on that log Dieter? Oh well you obviously believe you are entitled to play Super Rugby. Strange thing Cheeky asking the Lions to release their players to play in PE? Enjoy your year in Super 15 boys. Pray that there are no injuries, or things will go from bad to worse! You will find that a draw against the Puma's just doesn't cut it in the bigger competitions!!!

  • gregory.martin.5070 - 2012-09-21 08:03

That's all they worried about, the numbers. This tournament is too long and is killing the players.

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-09-21 08:32

Yes the same Crusaders !!! What are you trying to say? Because they were mediocre last year they are a bad team? Who's your team? I can promise you they too have had a bad game! Last time I checked, people could support whoever they f@rking well want! Idiot!!!

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-09-21 08:34

The kings LOL. They should be called the Queens, the only team who have not earned the right to be there.

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-09-21 08:34

Sorry, I see you support the Kings... then you should be cr@pping yourselves to play the Rebels... I see your angle, the Rebels are actually a powerhouse team so when they put 50 points on you it's not so bad!

      dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-09-21 08:44

jimmy are you a NZ cannibal?

      uwe.klopfer - 2012-09-21 08:59

i reckon the chief are going to hammer them a wee bit as well... Even the stormers will be able to score four tries !

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-09-21 09:08

@Macziekpk... lol :) @Dieter only half bro, my mum is a Saffa!

      dante.walters.50 - 2012-09-21 10:56

Raven I don't think the bulletjies can win 4 matches in a season, no matter who they play against.

      charlietlo - 2012-09-21 15:35

@dieter.muller unfortunately i hate everything associated with westen province/stormers or as you say cape Kroesader...... im a proud cheetah fan and i know year in year out we do badly but how many players have we produced only to be snatched by other unions(esp sharks)

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-09-21 08:12

Hope these Southern Kings/Watson's get such a hiding that they will hide their faces in shame and: @charles.dumbwin how can we support a team that was forced on us by SARU and the way that Watson Snr went about "forcing" a decision by SARU to allow them to play Super Rugby.

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 08:28

Roy who is this "us" you refer to? This is an EC team and I can gauranteeyou that 95% of people living in the EC will support this team. Every home game they play will be sold out because the people of the EC are hungry for top flight rugby. So nothing was forced on "us". You dont have to watch the games on Tv or go the the stadium. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. The probably will watch them.

      vernon.annandale.7 - 2012-09-21 08:39

Ill watch just to see them have their ass's handed to them

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-21 08:44

@bootman, nope, won't watch them, will just see the cricket score put up against them every game and really enjoy every loss they will have, record breaking losses each one :)

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 08:48

I know you will. The "boycott the Kings" brigade will be watching in their droves and in so doing, push up their TV ratings. Add to that the huge numbers that will attend the games................I predict that the Kings will be the most watched team next year. The revenue from advertising will stream in and there is no way SARU will allow this cash cow to be removed from S15. Kings are here to stay.

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-21 09:09

@bootman, hahahaha, that is where u r wrong, after the holidays i'm cancelling dstv, and the reason i'm giving is the Lions aren't playing :) so not only WON'T I watch them, the tv guys that paid to broadcast their games are loosing what is most dear to them, money. this farce will only last one year, queens will be relegated and the whole saga will be forgotten soon, never to be repeated again :)

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 09:19

Come on Nico. You dont have to cancel your DSTV. You can just downgrade to DSTV Compact. At least you'll still then be able to watch highlights on SS Action.

      dante.walters.50 - 2012-09-21 11:02

Well, I am not a supporter of the Watson's, but what is the "biggy" on this topic. If they end up last on the log, it will just mean that they are taking over from where the Lions have been all these years.

  • chiepner - 2012-09-21 08:15

I am so proud of how the Kings are actually premoting and developing rugby in the Eastern Cape. I mean all the talented players they signed from other provinces and now trying to get SARU to change the rules JUST FOR THEM so that instead of local South African players they can sign even more foreign players is an exeplery example how transformation and development in the Eastern Cape is coming on leaps and bounds. Told you all - !ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!

  • bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 08:22

You people are all a bunch of morons. Take all the players from the Bulls that were not born in Pretoria and what do you have? A team that probably wont even be competative in 1st division. The only way to develop local talent is to first give the promising youngsters something to strive toward...namely... a team that plays in the S15. At the moment the Kings dont have much local talent because they are all playing for the Stormers, Sharks, and Bulls. When these youngsters see that they can now stay at home and still play S15, then development of local talent will take place. The big misconception about this whole saga (and the thing that white people most abhor) is that this is about black rugby players, when it is about Eastern Cape rugby players. If the Dutchmen put aside their petty, unfounded hatred for the Watsons, they will see that this good for SA Rugby in the long run.

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-21 08:46

just because a player is born in the eastern cape does not mean he is any good. they get developed in other unions to be great players, and only then do u want to claim him. if you were so good at developing players you would have deserved to be in super rugby long time ago. you don't deserve it because you need other unions to develop your players. and no, it is not good for sa rugby, not in the short run and not in the long run.

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 08:58

Oh Nico please dont "assume". You'll make an "ass" out of "u" and "me". Im not from the EC..........and your argument holds no water. What union would take a below everage player from another union and spend money to develop him? They take promising youngsters. These youngsters leave because there is no "step up" for them, ie Super Rugby. Thats gonna change now. Are you suggesting that Ryan Kankowski was a terrible rugby player and the Sharks bought him and made him the player he is today?

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-09-21 09:03

Take all the players from the Bulls that were not born in Pretoria and what do you have? You still have a full Bull's team apart from Spies. Come on you know as well as I do nothing great is born in Pretoria.

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-21 09:12

@bootman, i only meant they are developed in other unions and not in the EC, therefore EC can't claim them as being from them. hundreds if not thousands of promising young rugby players are bought by the big unions every year, some make it, most don't. when an established player move from one union to another, the loosing fans got something to complain about, but when a youngster moves there is no guarantee that he will accomplish something and the union that buys him must still develop him to hopefully be a great player.

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 09:23

Nico you are now just speaking in tongues. I've made my point.

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-09-21 11:53

BlueRaven, Western Province have 19 player's born in the Cape Town in there Currie Cup Squad. The Blue Bull's have 6 Players from Pretoria in there Currie Cup Squad...... eina

      suzette.terblanche - 2012-09-21 16:35

Bootman, all I ask of you is to explain to me how the Kings got into Super Rugby on MERIT. I remember them not being able to beat Boland in last years 1st division final...I remember them losing by over 80 points to the Lions in February. You tell me why they deserve it more than Griquas to play S15. Griquas have been working hard, slowly building a team and look at them now. Why couldn't the Kings PUT IN THE HARD WORK and also do what Griquas did. First win the 1st division and then get competitive in the Currie cup. All we asked.. If you can grasp the concept of MERIT and sport, maybe you will understand why the majority of people are upset.

  • denis.dendrinos - 2012-09-21 08:32

eish their first overseas game is against the crusaders? I shudder.....

Do you thing they realize that they will travel to New-Zeeland? I think cheeky 'poefneus' whatsup'son will claim they are still previously disadvantaged and cannot afford the flight tickets and that all games must be played at the EP home turf(that is owend strangely enough by him and his family)

  • - 2012-09-21 08:36

i always support our SA teams even the Bulls when they play the Aus and NZ teams #justsaying. CMON BOKKE and PROTEAS!!!

  • Hansie.Crook - 2012-09-21 08:53

No matter how many of the people might not agree with the Kings being promoted to Super Rugby, the fact remain that they are there.. and they will stay in the S15 for atleast another season.... (no amount of bad mouthing an bickering will change that) At the end of the day they will be out there flying the SA flag. So lets support them!!!

  • waldo.strydom.9 - 2012-09-21 09:00

The Kings should just go to the shops and buy themselves a wooden spoon. It'l be a lot easier and ofr sure a lot less embarrassing than loosing all your games.

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-09-21 10:28

Yawn Waldo thats so obvious ..same ol Bull .. just a different cow

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-21 10:33

To all the Southern King bashers -stop your clinging and love to a past that was dehumanizing and discriminatory to the majority of South Africans. Cheeky is, like Beyers Naude, one of the whites you had the courage to go against it. The rest of you lived in paecefull contentment. For this you will never ever forgive him. For the rest of us, he is a hero.

"For the rest of us, he is a hero" - You mean, the same "us" that just demand, demand, and demand more and more handouts, instead of working for it? In the same way the Kings just got handed their spot instead of deserving it? The same way Luke got handed his Bok colours instead of deserving it? Just because daddy Cheeky demanded it? You make me sick. All over Luke's Kings jersey.

@Mark,this has nothing to do about the past, black or white,I say if a team is good enough and has EARNED! Their spot buy all means go for it but the way they got in is disgracfull to SA rugby and then the D00s Cheeky want to change the rules to suit him and his son that some how climbed out of the abortion bucket! @bootman.bokke I do agree with you that 95% of the Eastern Cape WILL watch their home games but what is going to happen when they play at the other country venues, will they be booed?

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 11:01

No they will not be booed in other countries. It is only The South African Dutchman who are worried about the Kings and see them as the "swart gevaar", so they will only be booed at Loftus. I doudt that Aus and NZ care much about the Kings.

En jy's n derde klas een.

      Kimson Komodo Chan - 2012-09-22 07:27

No the fans will laugh at them.

  • paullouis.louw - 2012-09-21 10:25

Kings will take it. Can't wait till they beat the Bulls. A laugh it will be..

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-21 10:41

      Possible and probable.

      arnold.coetzee - 2012-09-21 11:07

and a long wait it will be- hope you live that long

  • stoute.babuseng - 2012-09-21 10:39

Will they get relegated if they finish at the bottom of South African conference? maybe SARU should consider that whom ever finishes last on the SA conference gets relegated every season

  • johan.coetzer.52 - 2012-09-21 10:43

I was under impression the Kings will be the team that would field more players of colour and be a model for transformation , it appears though the majority of players will still be white , so why was their inclusion in the S15 pushed so hard . Go Sharks !!!!!!!

      bootman.bokke - 2012-09-21 11:04

Johan I wish that you and the rest of the mindless masses who post the same thing over and over would grow brains.

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-09-21 11:17

put 10 black players in the starting team from day me a favour build a strong squad and give the black players the structure to blossom

  • jaco.bezuidenhout.18 - 2012-09-21 11:00

The kings only need a big sponsor so that they could bring in good players. They'll do allright, can't do any worse than the lions!

      Hansie.Crook - 2012-09-21 12:37

in the 2010 S14 season the Lion ended up being last on the log with NO WIN.... Who can do worst than that??

  • patrickjasoncawood - 2012-09-21 11:13

Watch the Southern Kings win this one at a jam packed stadium

  • sarel.korf - 2012-09-21 11:37

Hahaha so lets get ready to see the queens go down. Can't wait!!!!!! To all the other SA teams Good Luck and happy pickings in PE. I will be supporting all the teams playing against the queens.

  • dellwayne.louw - 2012-09-21 11:46

i say give the kings a chance.they cant do worse than the welpies.remember the last placed sa team will play the lions at the end of the season in a promo game.and unless all u naysayers got a crystallball who said it will be the kings.they will either suprise us or end up i told u so.

  • sebastian.debeer.1 - 2012-09-21 12:16

I find it pathetic how everyone is so negative towards the King's just because of the Watsons. How about you don't support the Watsons but give the King's a chance. Can't wait for the 23rd of February, let's go King's !

      roelfensusanne.mare - 2012-09-21 14:26

Your team is nowhere to be found at the curry cup series and now all of a sudden your team compete in a much higher league? How fair is this? Please answer me if you have one excuse?

      sebastian.debeer.1 - 2012-09-21 20:36

Lions finished last so they must be relegated, if King's finish last they will get relegated. Just happy that the King's have been given a chance and that the people of the eastern cape can watch there side in the big league.

      sebastian.debeer.1 - 2012-09-21 20:38

Oh and to answer your question, we leading the currie cup first division by 8 points.

      Kimson Komodo Chan - 2012-09-22 00:11

Lead the 1st division by 8 but still can't beat the pumas. And I can't wait to see the force smash the kings into submission

      Kimson Komodo Chan - 2012-09-22 00:17

Lead the 1st division by 8 but still can't beat the pumas. And I can't wait to see the force smash the kings into submission

      sebastian.debeer.1 - 2012-09-22 11:03

Not going to change the fact that the Lions are out mate. Time to move on.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-09-22 21:38

Your Kings are leading the Currie Cup first division by 8 points! You must be so proud! I am so disappointed with the Lions. While they lead the Currie Cup Premier Division, it isn't by a whole 8 points ffs!!!

  • andre.potgieter.5 - 2012-09-21 12:47

The Southern Kings, as they will be known, can not do worse in the Super Series than the Lions did the previous season. Last is Last !! GO KINGS, You will not win the Trophy but you will kick some arses !!

      charlietlo - 2012-09-21 15:36

      whose arse?

      Kimson Komodo Chan - 2012-09-21 23:38

Sos to the bloody aussie rebels. If you wanna beat sa franchise in s15, then the kings are there for the taking!!!

  • boltonbarry - 2012-09-21 13:10

i WILL SUPPORT any team that plays against the Kings

  • johan.coetzer.52 - 2012-09-21 14:48

I hoped that the Kings would actually be accepted as a team representing the EC and be allowed to explore developing talent from the previous disadvantaged group .We were made aware of this on countless occasions that the talent from Border etc is not utilised and that the vast areas of the Transkei ,Ciskei is untapped .Morons such as Bootman.Bokke who fail to see that comments posted in this regard is actually in support of the Kings and for the development of rugby for all is quite sad .In so far as rugby up north let the Bulls and Lions amalgamate and play at the Soweto stadium . Bootman.bokke I am not one of your mindless masses and truly believe that for rugby in the RSA to be accepted by all there has to be a team truly representing the previous disadvantaged but as I said in my previous post it appears Kings will be almost lily white and have lily white imports blowing a golden chance . Go Sharks !!!!!

  • keithronald.wildschut - 2012-09-21 14:59

Annandale you can't even spell whipped. We'll wait and see what the Kings can offer.

  • keithronald.wildschut - 2012-09-21 15:01

Vernonannandale just look at thestats and you'll see that the Lions deserve to be demoted-most of the years they were lying at the bottom of the log.The Kings will certainly do better.

  • stompies.hattingh.5 - 2012-09-21 15:09

As die stormers dit nie met daai loting kan maak nie, sal hulle dit nooit regkry nie!

  • athi.ntisana - 2012-09-21 15:40

I think SA's news 24 should block you all unpatriotic Bigots!!!! nuff said!!!

      paul.sdoow - 2012-09-21 16:07

well that's a bit harsh? what would your reaction be if you been waiting in a long queue at the shops and an idiot pushes in front of you at the till? you would also moan and tell the dude to get to the back of the f. . . ing queue? well then why should the kings jump the queue?

      paul.sdoow - 2012-09-21 16:08

but ya i suppose democracy is the winner here. not the correct vote but the majority vote is the winner at the end.

  • peter.britz1 - 2012-09-21 20:25

Ha ha, dirty thugs EP Kings getting spanked by Pumas! And they want to compete in S15? BwahahaaaaHa

  • nico.vanvuuren - 2012-09-21 21:24

I just watched the game where they drew (for the 2nd time this year) against one of the power houses in SA rugby. How I look forward to Puke and Son's misery next year!

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-09-22 21:40

Careful Nico, Sebastian pointed out earlier they are leading the Currie Cup first division by 8 points! That alone surely shows they deserve to play Super Rugby!

  • KLSmith51 - 2012-09-22 23:44

At least they will be popular on this forum as the whipping boys and the jokes that will come out will be hilarious stuff to read next year. Gee the King supporters are in for serious stick next year.

  • beatybotha - 2012-10-26 21:37

  • hendrik.schutte.3152 - 2012-10-28 14:49
