Player, who turned 84 on Friday, was speaking to Sport24 at a charity event - A Night with Ronan Keating - at Val de Vie Estate on Saturday.
While he wasn't overly pleased with how the Boks performed in their quarter-final win over Japan or their semi-final win over Wales, Player said he was confident the Boks could get the job done against a more fancied English outfit.
"Both teams want to win the World Cup really badly, but there is something about these South Africans," he said.
"They've really got a great passion and passion is so important in sport.
"Win or lose, they have done really well."
