Pieter-Steph still in disbelief at World Cup triumph

Cape Town - Winning the Rugby World Cup still hasn’t quite sunk in for World Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit, who remembers the final as a wonderful blur.

“People told me. It would go by in a flash; now I believe those people,” Du Toit says on this week’s edition of The Dan Nicholl Show, broadcast from the BrightRock Players Choice Awards.

“I don’t think it’s completely sunk in. Yet that we are world champions - since we won we’ve been so busy with events and celebrations, there hasn’t been much time.”

Du Toit, who won the Players’ Player of the Year Award, also pays tributes to his fellow Springboks and coach Rassie Erasmus.

“It’s been a team effort, with everyone understanding the process, and what our roles are. And I started to believe we had a chance of winning after the first game with Rassie - it felt really positive.”

Fellow Springbok Herschel Jantjies also celebrates Du Toit on the show, and reveals an emotional highlight of the World Cup celebrations.

“I had my own trophy tour at home, and that was extremely special. The win meant so much to my parents, and I think there were some tears shed when we won. It was such a great way to thank them for everything they have done for me.”

Also on the show are Blitzboks Rosko Specman, whose Fans’ Choice Award came with R50 000 for a charity of his choice, which Specman reveals on the show; and Chris Dry, who shows off his famed rapping skills with a cameo performance.

It’s not just rugby, however, as cyclist Daryl Impey, who won a stage on the Tour de France this year and wore the yellow jersey, joins Dan - and shares some rugby stories.

“I managed to get to the semi-final with Chris Froome to watch us beat Wales. I was wearing my South African cycling shirt, and being there for the victory was an amazing experience.”

Impey also recalls his time as a team-mate of Lance Armstrong, his first ride on the Tour de France, and his upcoming charity dinner in support of Rare Diseases.

Completing this week’s line-up is acclaimed actress Cindy Swanepoel, currently starring in Binnelanders, who adds her thoughts on a possible 2019 World Cup movie, and picks some of her favourite roles from a glittering career.

The Dan Nicholl Show presented by BrightRock premieres on SuperSport 8 at 19:00 on Wednesday night, and is available on ShowMax, Catch-Up and DSTV Now.
