De Allende dominates Bok stats in Japan win

21 October 2019 08:35

Cape Town - A look at the match-day statistics shows that Springbok centre Damian de Allende was as important as anyone for the South Africans in their 26-3 World Cup quarter-final win over Japan on Sunday.

The Boks were stretched, particularly in the first half when Japan dominated possession, while they had to rely on their monstrous defence to stay ahead in the opening 40 minutes.

De Allende, so often criticised by Boks fans, stood head and shoulders above the rest in this department by making more tackles than anyone else on the field on Sunday with 17, according to the tournament's official website

Lood de Jager (14), Cheslin Kolbe (12) and Siya Kolisi (11) were the next most impactful Bok tacklers on the day.

De Allende also won 3 turnovers for the Boks - more than anybody else.

He was also impressive on attack, making 1 clean break and beating 4 defenders.

Elsewhere, and unsurprisingly, Bok scrumhalf and man-of-the-match Faf de Klerk led the 'kicks from hand' category with 17 on the day.

To put that into perspective, Japanese starting scrumhalf Yutaka Nagare kicked from hand just twice all match.

In terms of the comparative team stats, thing were a lot closer than the final score suggested.
