The RWC PPP of the Day

Cape Town - Each day the Sport24 team will select the best Performance, worst performance (or Plonker) and the best Picture from the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Today’s PPP has an organisation failing to stay out of the limelight by making a few questionable decisions which has not been taken in the best light by the rugby fraternity, while the Performance of the Day goes to the youngest member of the Springbok squad who prevented a Samoan flyer from potentially stealing the match away.

The Picture of the Day also comes from the World Cup clash between the Boks and Samoa where a familiar figure crossed the whitewash for the 40th time in a Bok jumper.

Performance: Patrick Lambie

Absent for much of the first half, the young Natalian slowly made his presence known in the match, none more so than in the 57th minute, shortly after Samoa scored their try.

Samoan wing David Lemi gathered a poor kick from Francois Steyn to broke through the Bok defence with only Lambie to beat.
However, Lambie was not to be outdone and despite Lemi’s twinkle toe-ed effort, brought the flyer crashing down to earth, thus allowing the Bok defence to recover and prevent a try in the process.

Had Lambie failed in his attempt, a converted try would have the Boks teetering with the score at 13-12 with 20 minutes remaining.

Plonker: IRB

Despite Samoa fullback, Paul Williams being sent off at a crucial stage in Friday’s match, today’s Plonker is the IRB once again.

Rugby’s governing body rightly handed England’s assistant coaches for illegally switching their match balls during match play, but chose not to financially punish them for infringing on the laws of the game, a harsh offence in itself as it can influence the outcome of a match.

However, in the same breath, Samoan wing, Alesana Tuilagi (who just happens to ply his trade in England for club side, Leicester) was on the receiving end of a $10 000 fine for wearing an ‘illegal’ mouthguard (which did not influence the outcome of that match).

A TV talkshow host has since started a campaign to raise funds to pay off Tuilagi’s unfortunate fine.

Picture of the Day:

Today’s picture of the Day would be a hard one to argue against as Bryan Habana scored the first try and only Springbok try of the day, which set the tone for the rest of the encounter, with the Samoans playing catch up the rest of the match.
