Georgia captain and first-choice scrumhalf Irakli Abuseridze is an unknown quantity to rugby fans who do not follow the French lower leagues and do not support the Georgian national team.

The 33-year-old is one of the team’s most capped players and has been part of the Test squad for a decade, making him one of the most experience players at the World Cup.

Abuseridze started his rugby career in the Georgian amateur club leagues and the quality of his performances at half-back soon earned him a call up to national side.

The scrumhalf made his debut against Italy in 2000, but his first match for Georgia would not be one ot remember as the team lost the match 57-7.

However, despite suffering a heavy defeat in the game¸ Abuseridze won a personal victory and was selected for the team’s next game against Portugal.

Abuseridze became an important part of the Georgian team and was part of the squad that traveled to the 2003 World Cup squad in Australia.

The Georgian captain played three games at the tournament and his steady performances earned him a move to French second division club Stade Aurillacois Cantal Auvergne and he stayed with the side for three years.

In 2006 Abuseridze dropped back down to amateur rugby when he joined RC Orléans, who play in the highest level of club rugby in France.

Despite dropping out of professional rugby, Abuseridze remained a fixture in the the Georgian national team, stayed the team’s captain and was again selected in the World Cup squad.

Abuseridze will go to the World Cup having played 72 Test for Georgia, including five World Cup games.
