Adam Byrnes is one of only five players in the Russian national team who play their rugby outside of the local club leagues and one of only three players who play for an established professional team.

Byrne was born in Australia, but qualified for Russian citizenship because of his grandmother, and currently plies his trade for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby.

The 2.01 meter tall, 118 kilogram lock forward is an abrasive, aggressive player and will fill the role of enforcer for the Russian team.

The lock has had the career of a journey man and has played for four professional teams, on two different continents, in his career .

Byrnes was part of the squad at Irish provincial side Leinster between 2005 and 2007 and made appearances in the Heineken Cup and Magners League for the team.

In 2008 He joined the Waratahs development programme, despite being 28 years old at the time, but never broke into the first team in New South Wales.

Byrnes then moved on to Queensland and the Reds, his second Super Rugby franchise, and made his Super Rugby debut for the team in the 2009 season.

Unfortunately for Byrnes, he failed to cement his place in the first team and moved on to the Melbourne Rebels, the newest Super Rugby team, in 2010.

Byrnes has become an important player for the Rebels since moving to Melbourne and has attracted attention with his physical style of play.

The lock has only one international cap and has never played at the Rugby World Cup, but will be an important player for Russia at the tournament.
