Os: Pick Smith - then the rest

Marco Botha

Wellington - Juan Smith is the first name that Os du Randt will pencil in if he had to pick a Springbok squad for the Rugby World Cup.

Du Randt was at Imbuko this week to launch his wine label, Osbloed. When asked about the Bok squad at the function, he did not hesitate to start at Smith.

"Juan is a simple being. There are no grey areas with him, so you know exactly where you stand with him. It's all or nothing for him. It's an attitude that you want at the World Cup and why guys like him, Fourie du Preez and Butch James were so good at the 2007 World Cup," said Du Randt, who was part of the Springbok World Cup-winning teams in 1995 and 2007.
Smith suffered a serious Achilles injury against the Bulls in February and there was initially concern about his availability for the tournament, which starts in September. It does not worry Du Randt that he will only be able to start running later this month.

"He's a tough guy and psychologically very strong. You could pick him the moment that he's fit. When Juan was injured last year and his father passed away, we missed him at Free State. He leaves a huge void," said Du Randt.

"When I saw as scrum coach how badly he was being missed, Juan's value increased even further in my eyes.”

He also reckons that Bakkies Botha deserves to be mentioned in the same breath in spite of all his misdemeanours.

"I know that Bakkies has caused some problems for himself, but guys like him and Juan literally bleed for the Springbok jersey. They always give it their all when they pull on the jersey. It does not matter how many Tests they have played or how settled they are in the team," said Du Randt.

"It's not just about their individual contributions, but about how other players feel in their presence. You know that Juan won't let you down with mediocre performances - that is not in his make-up. It's not how he lives. You pick him first. Finished."

As far as the Bok front row is concerned, Du Randt revealed he would pick Jannie du Plessis and CJ van der Linde as tighthead props, with Beast Mtawarira and Gurthrö Steenkamp the looseheads. He believes John Smit should only be considered as a hooker.

Agtste man? Ek sal Rossouw,Alberts en Vermeulen saam vat?

      WPBEFONK - 2011-06-03 10:39

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-03 10:51

@WPBEFONK - jy bly maar n dom ou! Kanco en Duanne?? Spelers soos Dannie en Johnson is better!

      Peter Britz - 2011-06-03 12:08

@ WPBefonk, Flouw is good, but he is nowhere near the quality of Juan Smith, he is the hard man in the pack, even though he doesn't do it the Bakkies way! He is an athlete of class. Supreme in the lineouts, fast and strong, with good hands. Os isn't alone in his asessment, most rugby selectors would pick Juan before any other 7 flanker

      Uncle - 2011-06-03 21:13

Retief maak goeie Port so terloops.....

  • Rocky - 2011-06-03 10:31

Back in early-2007 I was punting Juan to be our man of the team but didn't foresee Bryan Habana raking in the tries. Juan is a 'must' - as is that awesome workhorse Danie Rossouw

  • gorden.dreghorn2 - 2011-06-03 11:43

Os what a Joke, first this is very inaccurate reporting. Os using a word like ‘void’ heh heh do me a favour he can’t string 3 sentences together in English. And just to show what a complete idiot he is at selection he has CJ down as tighthead????,... so much for legend.

      Peter Britz - 2011-06-03 12:06

And pray do tell what have you achieved in life? Passed English? We are so proud of you!! Os is a legend, and nothing a numnuts like you can say will change that. He wasn't selected to play for the Boks based on his fluency in English!

      Kudubul - 2011-06-03 13:07

Hi numnut it's Rugby not English poetry classes!

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-03 13:40

gordon just shows what you know about rugby.... cj can scrum at tight head and loose head you plank

      Jacques - 2011-06-03 14:01

Jy is common jou @sshole. Net in jou comic books wereld sal jy 'n legend wees.

      Marco - 2011-06-03 14:10

The interview was in Afrikaans . . . He used the word "leemte", which is exactly what Juan leaves. He also mentioned that CJ is not playing his best rugby right now, but he is more than capable to play both loose- and tight head. In a World Cup that might useful, whilst a guy like Coenie probably needs a few more years before he'll be the primary selection.

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-04 05:42

Os would use the English word "void" V.O.I.D. to describe what is between godrens.dreghorn2's ears(and legs?)

      Kaapie - 2011-06-04 21:30

Gilbert, CJ has not been very convincing at either Lh or TH.. not a guarenteed selection in my view. Given away many penalties for dropping the bind and 'hinging' Props must firstly be able to scrum.

  • Armchair critic - 2011-06-03 13:55

The first person using their brains in a long, long time... Thanks Os!

      majoor - 2011-06-03 17:45

      What Brains bru?

  • Jacques - 2011-06-03 14:07

Juan is ook 'n certain pick in my span. Retief maak goeie Port so terloops.....

      majoor - 2011-06-03 17:43

Jacqeus.

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-04 05:45

Juan is an exellent rugby player, but spare us the backward nonsence about Vrystaat and boerseuntjies.

  • TylerDurton - 2011-06-03 14:39

I think its unfair to the guys who have played their hearts out all year to loose a possible place in the bok side, just because we believe/hope Juan Smith will be in form come the Rugby World Cup. We have Schalk Burger, Willem Alberts, Duane Vermeulen, Pierre Spies, Ashley Johnson, Ryan Kankovski, Francois Louw, Danie Russouw, Jean Deysel, Joe van Niekerk, Heinrich Brussouw and Joshua Strauss who should all be carefully considered.

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-03 15:23

      but juan is better

      majoor - 2011-06-03 17:44

Tyler. You are 100% correct bru. When it comes to WCR there's no space for provincial wet-dreams.

      TrueSaffa - 2011-06-04 17:02

Juan is better than all those players u have mentioned....

  • majoor - 2011-06-03 17:37

Come on people... Let's be realistic. So with 100 days to go and..."It does not worry Du Randt that he will only be able to start running later this month." Sorry boet, I know you were a legend but you're human. So Os want's to tell us that Juan Smith will be ready for action with 70 days to prepare? I think not... This statement is emotionally based. As much as I respect Os, I have to say that he is not being objective...

  • Uncle - 2011-06-03 21:12

You can take anybody you like. Anybody! But for the love of any god you choose...PLEASE leave Spies at home! PLEASE!?!?!?!

  • Kleinboet - 2011-06-04 02:09
