Victoria - One of the trio of Canada rugby players who gained almost cult status as "The Beardos" during the Rugby World Cup has had his bushy beard sheered for charities.
Flank Adam Kleeberger was cheered by hundreds of students at the University of Victoria as the 30cm beard came off while he sat on a makeshift stage.
"Somebody said to me the modern-day beard is the urban antlers. I like that one," said Kleeberger, who described his bearded look as "lumberjack."
The stylist manscaped various looks as the beard was reduced, including a Fu Manchu mustache that was braided and topped off with two red bow ties.
Kleeberger said afterwards he felt a cool breeze on his clean-shaven face. "It definitely feels cold," he said. "My head feels lighter, too."
Citing New Zealand's hospitality toward Canada at the World Cup, he raised $3 700 for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, and $1 900 for 'Movember', a campaign each November where men grow mustaches to raise awareness and funds for cancer.
Kleeberger and fellow hairy-faced teammates Hubert Buydens and Jebb Sinclair were dubbed 'The Beardos' when they came together in camp in July, and became hugely popular during the World Cup. Canada beat Tonga, drew with Japan, and lost to New Zealand and France in pool play.
