Kirchner replaces Steyn

2011-10-01 21:14

Blue Bulls fullback Zane Kirchner has been called into the Springbok Rugby World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Frans Steyn.

Kirchner, 27, will join the squad in Wellington on Tuesday morning in preparation for Sunday’s quarter-final.

Confirming the news to Sport24, Kirchner said he was quite surprised:

“The call was unexpected, I was cleaning the patio so I was quite surprised when the phone rang. I don’t think it will sink in until I am over there in New Zealand but I am looking forward to it," said Kirchner.

Steyn injured his left shoulder in the final few minutes of the Springboks’ 13-5 victory over Samoa in Auckland on Friday and will return to South Africa for surgery.

“I am bitterly disappointed,” said Steyn. “I don’t know how the injury happened – it was at a ruck when I was cleaning someone out late in the game. I was enjoying our campaign and the tournament, and to have it ended like this is very disappointing.

“I’d just like to wish the squad all the best for the rest of the tournament.”

Steyn scored tries in each of the Springboks’ first three matches in the tournament as well as adding two long-range penalties for a haul of 21 points in his second Rugby World Cup. Four years ago he became the youngest player to win a Rugby World Cup winners’ medal as a 20-year-old in South Africa’s victory in France.

Kirchner has won 14 Springboks caps – the last of them coming against England in November.

He was a member of the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup preliminary squad but missed out on initial selection for the Tri-Nations tournament because of injury. He has since returned to fitness and to Currie Cup action with the Blue Bulls.

Peter de Village idiot strikes again!

      Neilson - 2011-10-01 22:21

He will only warm the bench with the likes of de Jongh hopefully.

      marco - 2011-10-01 23:23

@WP rugby11 I think PDV and co know's pretty much by now who their starting 15 against Australia/Italy/Ireland will be and the number 12 position did pick itself until Frans Steyn got injured. The Boks last match against the Samoan thugs,PDV got his starting 15 just about right so this thing with Kirchner might not entirely be his choice or decision to have to make.Somehow I think the powers that be,SARU,had a hand in all this.Maybe I'm wrong who knows! @Neilson Every number 12 is different for the Boks and each of them brings his own ability to the game.Juan De Jong is a very committed player especially in his tackles no doubt about that, but he does lack the physical presence synonymous with South African rugby and that which Jean De Villiers brings if nothing else.De Jong's all-round game on the park and his presence of mind and alertness on the field as where he needs to be when he came on as a sub against Namibia was also impressive to say the least, and that's why he scored his try.So I'm sure PDV looks at suchlike performances, notes it down and what have you to see how they can utilize his strengths and weaknesses, but still he lacks the physical presence which is why he may be better suited as an impact player from the bench than a starter.JDV is a substitute just like De Jong is,but with Frans gone one would think JDV will start next Sunday week and De Jong coming on as a sub if need be.

      Bambie - 2011-10-02 01:13

Damn...Ok i'm a big Bulls fan but honestly..We need a 12...The people that we have at the mo won't fill Styen shoes...He brought a whole new dimension to the backline. Personally i think they should have called up that chap from the cheetas as old Lambie is doing just great at 15. We don't need another 15 we need a 12 and old Viskop JdV isn't upto it...Sorry...Bye Bye RWC..

      Drake - 2011-10-02 02:19

kirchner not even good enough for bulls bench. need brute force at no 12. mvovo the man.

      Paddy - 2011-10-02 04:13

Another kick and charge idiot from the Bulls.Du Preez,Morne Steyn and useless Pierre Spies will cost us the WC.

      Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-02 04:22

Too many people that dont have a clue on this site....I am not a fan of Kirchner but he understands the Boks systems plus he can do two things that can come in handy in the NZ conditions. 1. He can kick 2.He can tackle i dont see him playing but should something happen to Lambie then he has a chance on the bench...The backs are not going to see much ball for the rest of the world cup make no mistake we are now at the business end, Boks vs England final i am calling, they have the best forwards...

      René Müller - 2011-10-02 07:00

@Bambie and @Ya Beaty, fully agree with you. ZK attended the Bok camp and understand the setup! We all know there are better f/backs but Zane did not pick himself therefore why attack him. Besides I can think of a couple of guys not belonging in the current squad but hey, the don the Green & Gold I support them 100%, @Paddy, why oh why the hatred toward the Bulls? Geez, they're a great team to support!! They bring more joy than sadness - promise! Anyway good luck BOKKE!!!

      A Rolls-Royce for a bicycle?

      Met - 2011-10-02 07:27

The Bulls must be pleased. At least they dont have to play him in the remainder of the CC

      Etienne - 2011-10-02 10:56

Steyn was playing senter, but with him getting injured, they needed backup for fullback, and not for senter.

      StaalBurgher - 2011-10-02 13:38

Frans Steyn is a huge loss. The largest loss of Juan Smith, Andries Bekker or Francois Steyn because of the 3 Steyn has no one even close to what he offers. While I still have some hope I fear our cause has been dealt a huge blow.

      Charlie the man - 2011-10-02 06:33

@I agree Does this clown of a coach want to win this WC or not, by including ZK means that our coaching staff and/or selectors aren't serious to win this world cup. ZK is one of the worse players in the current Currie Cup. There are ten times better players currently playing in the Currie Cup why him, he is useless and doesn't deserve to be there. I was so glad when he was excluded. I even said to my wife, we going to win this WC because ZK is not in our team.

      jontheb - 2011-10-02 09:00

the only benefit to this could be a weakened bulls team...let's hope he's just there to make up numbers and doesn't even make the bench!!!

This is a sad day for Sa Rugby, of all the Rugby players in the country we choose wonder our spotsmen are immigrating to the West, this smacks of arrogance from the "self-rightous" P.Diddy and shows utter disrespect to the Nation and our intent on defending the trophy..surely! the morale of the other players in the camp will be disturbed by such horrendous news thus, denting the players confidence, all because of P.DIddy tyring to appease his "Moere-Hulle" Headline hogging masters.

  • marco - 2011-10-01 22:27

My gut feeling tells me this was a SARU or better yet a Oregan Hoskins' decision this was pure and simpe. So far PDV has made "OK" choices especially with the Samoa game so I can't really see how PDV or Rassie,or even Dick Muir would've got this so badly wrong in making such a bad misjudgment and poor decision calling up TAKHARE Rastafarian. This has the be the most stupidest and dumbest thing ever the management had been asked to make.A number 12 position player Frans Steyn, gets injured and they call in a number 15 player and fullback. What's the logic in that please for goodness sake? All this Kirchner idiot does is kicking and chasing after his own high balls all ****ing day long doing ****all anywhere else on the pitch. He frequently keeps throwing possesion away, can't ****ing tackle s**t,gets wrapped up and tossed aside by the opposition 10 out 10 times,so what's the point of this useless individual honestly? Is this a race thing or what?Is it because he is a coloured is that why they decided to do what they done here?

      RandomDude - 2011-10-01 23:12

There are many non-white players that can make the team based on merit .. Jantjies , is just one that comes to mind ... I don't think race has anything to do with it.. although I have to admit I cannot imagine what the thinking behind this was .

      marco - 2011-10-01 23:51

@RandomDude I take it you are talking about Conrad Jantjes from Boksburg who plays his rugby for Province.I watched that game he played in or the Stormers against the Cheetah's at New Lands last weekend and he was less than dull and unimpressive.Province went on to lose that game, not because of him,but he did very little if anything to change the course of the game.He didn't make PDV's 30 man squad for this World Cup in NewZealand and at 31 years of age now,I can't see him being in contention for the 2015 World Cup either as he'll be to old by then at 35 years of age,so there is no point hoping that he'll be in the Bok Team on merit as he'll probably won't do anything for the Boks then.Coloured people by and large needs a major boost of confidence in their own abilities and strenghts and they need to grow out of that stereotypical shadow cast over them of "not having any backbone" for that's just insulting to their abilities.

      RandomDude - 2011-10-02 00:07

@Marco , I was thinking about Elton from the Lions .

      DavesRave - 2011-10-02 08:54

Steyn was not picked as a 12 but as a 15. Try not to advertise your limited knowledge

  • nick - 2011-10-01 23:47

hahaha what a joke naas botha is a better selection

  • Mechiel - 2011-10-01 23:56

Kircner may not be the best choice, but he's the obvious one. He has experience and know the setup in the Bok camp. We still have Pat Lambie to start at fullback, and even Ruan Pienaar can play at fullback if push comes to shove. Zane will be adequate cover for Lambie. We've still got a lot op options and heaps of talent. Be optimistic for once!

  • roger plaatjies - 2011-10-01 23:57

what are the forwards always in the backline, what is the props doing on wing, why is Mathfield not part of the tight five? we must stop concentrating on defence, we must start to play attacking rugby, bring Gio on at fullback, let Hougaardt start in Du Preez place, don't even think of putting Piennaar on the bench, stop playing 2 backs on the bench, what if 1 backline player get injured? i'm not a coach, but i got game knowledge, Mr. De Villiers i got respect for you, but don't let Rassie overpower you, please?

  • derikbench - 2011-10-02 00:18

Lwazi Mvovo should have gone in Frans Steyn's place. Then JP Pieterson and Gio Aplon can cover for fullback, and you've got an extra wing seeing that Bryan Habana also has a niggly injury. Plus you'll satisfy the government by including another ethnic black player, without compromising quality. JUST NOT ZANE KIRCHNER!!!!!

  • ikey_tiger - 2011-10-02 00:31

    why not Earl Rose?? NAAAAT..

  • BLAP - 2011-10-02 00:55

  • Ryan - 2011-10-02 01:11

ARGH!!!!!!!! Why This moron... Here, Spies at 12, cos hes doing bugger all at 8, Alberts at 8, and keep Lambie at 15... What? You dont like Spies at 12? Well I dont see how else were keeping ZK out of the line up!

  • Mr.Rugby - 2011-10-02 01:12

the team who left SA was F Steyn and G Aplon on fullback, J de Villiers and J de Jongh on 12center, Lambie and M Steyn on flyhalf, Du preez and Hougaardt on scrum half, why can't the number 2 12center (De Jongh)not playing in his position, and why can't the number 2 full back (Aplon) not playing in his position? where does Ruan Piennaar fit in? Rassie is from the Free State, Ruan is from the Free State, Ruan's father Gysie Piennaar coached Rassie at the Free State, Ruan is the slowest back player in the team, but he got more game time than the game breakers who don't even reach the bench, Ruan will play fullback, wing, flyhalf, scrumhalf and center if there is an injury to one of the centers. why? because of Rassie Erasmus. Steenkamp replace the Beast, Dr. Jannie play 80 minutes while the Beast and Steenkamp are working harder than Dr. Jannie. F Steyn is hurt, but is Kirchner the answer to the problem? we agree that he is not the answer, Joe Petersen is a better fullback than Kirchner, if Rassie can call for F Steyn who are not playing in SA, why not call for Joe Petersen who played for WP? Is it all about the Bulls? the next player will be Olivier if J De Villiers get injured again. are the coloureds just here for bench warmers? even PDV is a bench warmer, Rassie, Gary gold and Dickless Muir are the coaching staff. look what they did at WP, no Rassie and Gary and the coloureds are playing good rugby at WP. Tygerberg RFC are playing next year with the big dogs, sweet

  • Sean - 2011-10-02 01:22
